Ducati 1199r & Base Compared.....Huge Disappointment....Must Read

CF reducing weight? For cryin' out loud, its plastic replacing plastic. All the R did that you can't easily replicate are the Ti rods. And they are available for most bikes 1K each. So unless you really need those RPMs, waist of money, unless you just want it. If you want different suspension then the S/Tri, the Base really is the bargain. Resale wise, the base have always exceeded the non-bases in depreciation percentage as well.

I'm not happy with the DES system the more I use it. I'm waiting right now to pick mine up after repairs when an active DES fault kicked in. WTF...

I agree - now think of any issue without a warranty? As my Dad said a million years ago about power windows "something else to go wrong"

Fixed lol on my way to pick up. If they fail out of warranty I'm going manual Ohlins.

+1 on this

I just saw no compelling reason to spend more for the "S" or the "R" over the base. ABS doesn't interest me. Same for cosmetic CF stuff. No interest in electronic suspension. TI rods? Maybe if I went racing again - though there are other machines I'd have more interest in racing.
Base model gives me a canvas to paint as I please. Rear sets, lighter wheels, and (possible) replacment of the rear shock (If I can't get what I want out of it).

-- to each his own desire......

-- and to each his own when checking details...the quick math tells me, and I don't even know what the other models cost, 2 grand in connecting rods + (10 hours labor ?) to "connect those puppies" and you're probably already in R territory......LOL !!

.....go ahead, I'm ready for rebuttal :)

Being a Math major, I'll give you some :)

Base ABS $19,000
Ohlins shock/fork upgrade $2,250
Full Termi (or AR/Akra) $3,500
Forged Mag Wheels $2,200
$26,950
If available:
Ti Rods $2,000
10 hours labor $1,000
$29,950

Better suspension, lighter wheels, your choice of exhaust. And you can do these mods as you have the funds available.

Gets even better if you already have the Base, and want to trade it in.

But if money is a non-issue, sure, drop $30K on the R, and do all the above.

Over in Spain we don't really get the choice to do to many things to the bike. The insurance companies go nuts if you do things like change to non factory wheels and the homologation and testing means fitting non standard parts can get you in real trouble with the police.

Add to that the loss of warranty here if you put in the Ti rods etc I'd just stick with the R if I wanted that from the start.

But for all of you in the US and UK remember how lucky you are at having the freedom to modify bikes and cars. Here you cannot even change the tyre size supplied when the car was new from the factory even if it was an option when the car was new. i.e. if you bought a BMW M3 with 18" standard wheels and later want to upgrade to the optional factory approved 19" wheels you can't! Its all madness....

-- isn't it great to have choices :)

-- i'm not sure i agree with all your pricing, (shock/forks) but i guess you can find an installer to discount the labor and get you to your number - but to be fair, the msrp on those items would be considerably higher...without looking i'd say +$500 probably higher - just use the "+" on the calculator

-- we forgot about the adjustable swingarm functionality...so, i guess you have to toss the stock swingarm, or have it machined...that shouldn't be too bad "mathematically"......the "+" on the calculator

-- the labor rate, unless you're in Tijuana, i think you under budgeted....most dealers will charge 5hrs for just the exhaust system....you'll need that "+" sign again....i don't think the suggestion of doing things "as funds are available" makes much sense mathematically either in your description for the labor rate - "+" again

-- if you want the things that make an R the R....buy it from the start and spend the riding season riding it :)

No fuzzy math there. It's a great deal anyway you look at it. Keep hitting the + button... As stated; it will add up quickly. It's why I stopped the add on insanity before it was too late. The R will ultimately save me big $

You forgot to hit the + for all the carbon with the front tyre guard as well and + for the paint job:)

i think the R is well priced but if i had a base i don't think it is worth getting killed on the trade in for one.

for me this R model is not differentiated enough from the base model which just shows how good a bike they originally made.

Looking forward to the reviews.

-- if you have a base model and want the R, the only way to go is to buy the R - if you throw practical thinking into the equation you'll find yourself taking the bus to work :)

-- everyone decides these things based on their own set of needs, desires, financial abilities - I think it's great that we have the ability to choose between the models, and we only have Ducati to thank for it !

I don't understand the concept of this thread.

If you want and can afford it, do what you want. You realize this is actually fairly impressive considering other market offerings. There aren't a lot of other large manufacturers that offer several models for the same sport bike. I'm thinking Honda, Yamaha, Kawi, Suzuki, and more.
