Unless you race the R
There is not diference between the S and the R around town the R is a good deal if you care about dp carbon but 500 more RPM and couple internal goods is not going to make you better or faster on the street compare with an S. There is two type of people who buy the R. One is the collector or people who just want to have the fully loaded bike and the ones the races it. The guys the race the R don't care about limited production or carbon the other guys just want the bike to impress other Ducati rides or the friends because we all know that for the public they don't know if you bike is an R or base model

It funny how Ducati want us to drink their cool aid, Ducati said couple years ago that the panigale is going to be the winner on wsbk , now they will tell us that we need another 100 cc to win, please Ducati stop trying to make us buy more bike how about start winning wsbk and we will so happy about the company that we won't care how hot the bike is

I generally avoid these things, but...really?? Show us somewhere, anywhere that Ducati have said they need another 100cc. Unattributed internetz speculation is all that is until backed up...

Besides, judging from Imola, where they were very competitive with two 2nds in Superbike and swept the full podium in SSTK, then I'd say they might need, oh maybe... 0cc.

People just think that the same thing that happened to the 1098 to 1198 is going to happen to the 1199. But, the 1098R was always 1198cc or whatever from the start. Ducati did build the 1098/1098R and then ask WSBK to change the rules to allow an extra 200cc. The bike came before the rule change, then Ducati forced the rule change through. The 1098 ran for 2 seasons then was updated to the 1198 in the third. Maybe Ducati can force through another displacement increase, but eventually they'll need to go to a V4 platform and equal displacements to other brands to keep racing.

I agree with you about the racing aspect, but the marketing aspect is quite reasonable. I said in the fifth post of this thread that perhaps Ducati would come out with a 1300cc update to the Panigale if KTM indeed came out with an 1290cc next-gen RC8 to follow-up on the Superduke R. I don't expect rules in WSBK to change and therefore Ducati would use their homologation "R" models to keep at 1199cc and incorporate whatever electronics/geometry/voodoo they need to be competitive on the racetrack with the full EVO class rules implemented next year.

Racing is about "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" but if the dealer next door is selling a 1290 cc to your 1199 cc... Well, as my wife says, SIZE MATTERS :D

You are way off.

I don't race my R, and I'm certainly not trying to impress anyone.

Anyone on this board that has ridden with me will certainly tell you the same.

That's like saying all sportbikes are Ninja's, and all sportbike riders are squids.

You just said it we are speculating. We are using our imagination to find out what Ducati will do in the next years nothing else. Sorry I can't provide proof

Also I agree with you about the two 2nds but I was hoping for first place in Imola

the pani's development is just getting under way.. it took 1 year to sort the mess out.. and now GIGI is getting things done... expect 2015 to be the year of the comeback...

the show of Chaz Davies was utterly impressive.. outbraking Sykes? sticking it to Guintoli? it s the first time that the pani shows its qualities to which they were conceived..

No you wouldn't

I said that until I upgraded my S for an R. It was just excuses in my head to justify not getting or make me feel better about not having one!!

Got one, will never look back. That R somehow manages to be far better mannered, especially round town, none of the first gear surging etc. more confident in corners, but still ballistic when you crack it open.......... Bloody marvellous if you ask me

Worth it? You bet your ... it is!!! :D

Same here. I assume its the lighter internals at work here...in particular the flywheel, but the R seemed massively more composed and "streetable" than the base w/ termis I test rode just before it. Less buzzing, surging, etc. Don't care what else Ducati puts out, I'm beyond happy with my R.

I rode Harleys for a number of years due to the fact I was going through 2 cervical spine fusions.

I had a 2013 103CI Roadking Classic that I had just finished. It was a real cool cruiser set up for nice rides down the beach in SoCal.

I had been wanting another sport bike and was torn between keeping the Roadking and getting a less expensive bike or get rid of the Roadking and get what I wanted.

I wasn't decided on the bike yet until I saw the R at a local dealership. I purchased it on the spot the end of Feb and have right at 1800 miles on it already. The bike is perfect in every way, I have no complaints.

It is incredible in the mountains/canyons and stupid fast in the straights. I can hop on it and drive it down the beach too. I found that by moving back on the seat to allow the side vents to evacuate the heat it stays controllable even while driving slow.

The R is worth every penny for the price of admission!! Ducati would really do the whole community a disservice by discontinuing the R from production!!

You think that R owners are trying to be better and go faster ON THE STREET, really? I'll admit I'm guilty of being a little vain with it because I'm a proud owner, but I'm not stupid!! Besides, I use mine on the street and the track, I notice the difference on both.

I wouldn't mind a lightened flywheel and engine internals for a faster revving bike around town. At least its performance that you can feel all the time. Throw on more carbon accessories, bonus!

You do realize that KTM no longer races on any world stage and only in the US, right? So, if they jump to 1290cc, they can without is causing issue with anything they have currently.

My personal opinion is that KTM will go to larger throttle bodies and revamp the engine design but stick with the 1190 area of size. They may jump big and do the shoe horn motor trick with the RC8. But, they need it to get the power the 1199 currently has. Even with the SD motor, they only have 185-ish at the crank... They need that extra size in the design they have to get the current numbers we have.

Also, KTM sells under 300 (At retail) RC8s including the track only version vs. almost 1500 (At retail) that Ducati sells in 1199 units in the US... So, there aren't that many sitting on the floor next to the 1199...

Now, if the Japanese are coming with an allowable larger displacement, I can see some serious engine size change. But, we would be hearing rules changes and potential of that already and I havent heard a single thing.

Will ever increasing environmental and noise regs even allow more bhp ? If not.. Then thr pani will do nicely for a while

agree completely !! whenever Ducati offers more of a bike, factory direct, it is a pleasure for anyone that can get it
