Have been riding Dukes for over thirty years and want to get something with more go than my 999S and am having trouble deciding between the 1198/1199; do fast continental roads, twisty stuff, and fast-group track days.

I thought this place would be awash with threads comparing the 1198 to the 1199 but have found very few opinions after a couple of searches, so...

For those who have/had an 1198 and now have an 1199 could you please comment on your findings, I'd especially like comments regarding the difference in torque spread and positioning in the rev range, from looking at many dyno charts it would seem the 1198 out-torques the 1199 in every useful scenario except at the track. I know the obvious answer is "ride both and decide" but I'd like real experiences from those who know as opposed to a 30minute test ride mostly in city traffic!

If I went the 1199 route I'd be looking at picking up a 2012 used model due to budget constraints. Many thanks! :)

I had a 1098S and I'm riding a 1199R now.
The low end torque was the big plus for the '98.
Handling, agility and ease of riding the bike fast are the pluses for the '99.

I have not owned a previous Ducati, but the guy I ride with every week has an 1198 S that I have probably put 500 miles on. That is by far the biggest difference I notice going from mine to his. His has a torque curve that starts very low and is very linear. I like my bike, but I really appreciate the mid range torque on his. The perfect bike would be a Panigale with all the good stuff ours has, his low end torque AND the top end HP of the Panigale.

I can't put my finger on why, but the Panigale is more comfortable for me to ride. I get sore in the shoulder blades on his bike.

I think that about sums it up.
Once you spend some serious time on an 1199 you wont worry about missing out on some torque.
Everything else makes up for the torque deficiency at lower rpm.

I have have a 999s
And have owned a 1098s and 1198s

Both the 1*98s had mucho torque-o
butt didn't feel like it was an extension of me..
Mind you, the 1198sfelt tits better than my previous 1098ass

The 1199 is the golden goose

Coming from an 848 to the 1199S.

No comparison between the two model lines.

1199S Hands down winner. I am 6'5" and love the riding position with a race seat and Ducabike rearsets.

The sound of my 1098 engine is better than my Panigale in my opinion. The 1199 sounds a little raspy compared to the rumble of the 1098. The 1199 is stiff and you can feel the lack of engine bushings to isolate the engine vibrations from the rider.

Other than that, electronics, slipper clutch, looks is all 1199. The panigale is lighter and you can feel it.

I owned a 2011 1198SP before my 2012 Tricolore Panigale. The Pani is better in every regard. The torque curve is definitely flatter on the 1198, but they both are so strong as it really doesn't matter. The SP was easier to sort out the suspension on (thanks Dan Kyle), but I am nearly there on the Pani. A previous posting was correct - you feel the difference weight-wise for sure, and the riding position is better. The stock seat on the Pani sucks big time (way too slippery). The LED lights on the S and Tri (and I would guess also the R and SL) are absolutely amazing as a plus. Another plus for the Pani is the dash - the SP was nearly impossible to read in bright sunlight, and the flat rate rear link is very nice and saves the $600 for an aftermarket unit. I guess I could go on further, but you get the point. The Panigale is an amazing - and superior - machine.

had the 1098s tri and it turned like ....! yeah the low end was explosive, but the 1199 is overall superior, and by a not insignificant margin....

Coming from 848 to 1199s, I don't have complaints on torque and power at all. The 1199 electronics (mainly TC) is worth every cents I paid, and has saved my skin countless of times (yea I'm that bad). The Ohlins are awesome. And the bike is so flickable, confident, and feels a part of me. The way it feels is almost like Japanese bikes in terms of easy to ride.
But by Zeus I really miss the 848/1x98 DP Superpole seat!!,

I have both, because I can.

Seriously, the 1199 is superior in every regard. I had the gearing change done and a few re maps, and mine is near perfect on the road. At the track the 1199 is quicker for sure.
On the road, you have all the nice electronics, multiple maps, and I have the S so the suspension also changes on the fly.
The 1198 now feels old school, but I still like it in its own way, but the 1199 just moved the whole Superbike twin to another level.

I probably haven't helped much.

Good luck either way

Apples and oranges. On the street, cruising around, I liked the 1198 better. Never in the wrong gear, just grab some throttle and youre gone. I'm 6ft 225 and I could ride for hours. At the track an 1198 without traction control had me close to high sides off slow corners constantly. If you don't buy offset triples and a linear link they turn like a truck and the rear performs poorly.
I don't like the ergos on the stock 1199, always weighting the bars. I made a flatter seat, added rearsets, stompgrip (a track must!) and woodcraft slip ons and the ergos are good now. The rear shock flat out blows, but if you replace it, set linked to flat, and this bike turns like an r6! My Duc hater racer friends love riding it. The low end grunt is gone, but the huge power is just moved up where its more valuable at the track. The electronics are brilliant and WILL save your ass! With a little ergo work and a shock, the 1199 is fun and very easy to go fast on.

i have 1098r and a 1199r (so similar) and the 1098r has a lot more torque and can pull away in almost any gear, it's also very wheelie prone.

However the 1199 is a far easier bike to ride and the electronics certainly help a lot along with the quick shifter and riding it on the street is a doodle whereas you will need a yoyodyne and a rcs clutch on the 1098.

on the track i also think the 1098r is a huge amount of fun and the grunt makes me laugh, but i really enjoy the flexibility of the 1199.

IF i had to chose between the two it would be the 1098r as it just feels very special whereas the 1199r just feels like another bike.

I've never owned a 1098/1198 but made this observation recently. A friend who is a Ducati tech is racing a 1098R that was custom built as a race bike in the state champs.

In the club round before the season started he was riding a CBR1000 and he was very evenly matched with one of his customer racers riding an 1199. The 1199 guy is the same Grade.

They fought all day (3 races) he beat the 1199 in 2 of the 3 races on the CBR. In the last round he ran the 1098R and again beat the 1199 in the two races they were in together, although again they were close.

This doesn't necessarily prove anything other than the 1199 is no panacea on the track. These guys finished mid-pack and there were numerous S1kRR, GSXR, ZX10 and CBR1000 in front of both of them.

IMHO the 1098/1198 belong to a (great) past era and a well sorted Panigale should be superior in almost every way if you can sort the throttle action and suspension.

I love the 1199s, however I do miss the torque of the 1198. The panigale is a better road bike in every way except that great torque of the 1198. Also panigale is nicer looking from front, but under seat pipes do look nicer. I have to say buy the panigale, have 13000 miles, no other bike I would want.. Did I say I miss the 1198 torque :)

I am thinking for longevity, I'd rather have an 1198. I am thinking with all the new fangled electronics, especially on the S and up, there is a lot to go wrong over the years. And getting a new computer for an 1199 10 years from now, will probably cost a friggin fortune.

Hey thank you all so much for these useful replies! When I posted this thread I thought I'd be lucky to get a couple of responses.

Thank you guys this is great feedback and just the sort of stuff I need to stir into my cloudy brain to help me decide which route to take next!

Great stuff :)
