I've had the bike for a few weeks, its had its 600 mile oil change (can't quite bring myself to call it a 600 mile service) and the dealer told me to ride it normally and start letting it do some work.. Here's my impression so far..

I haven't had the time to taken the fairings off yet but I strongly suspect that the 1285cc Superquadro vtwin engine that is rumoured to hold the headstock and forks to the swing arm doesn't really exist. It is my belief that there is scaled down version of the Apollo 5 rocket ( the most powerful machine ever built by man) lurking under the fairing, either that or some kind of hyperdrive. The engine is simply amazing, the way it pulls effortlessly in 3rd or 4th is something quite unbelievable. If you are running in and have kept to the 6000 rpm ( see other thread on running in.. ) you are in for a massive surprise when you finally start opening the bike up. It is leagues ahead of the 1199, a different world entirely and requires a fair degree of mental recalibration to get used to the way it builds speed. The famous vtwin torque, infamously missing from the 1199, is back with a vengeance and reminds you so whilst simultaneously shoving you in the back and trying to pull your arms off. I remember being disappointed the first time I rode the 1199, wondering where had the mid range gone and what had happened to the engine but not so on the 1299, its just what the Panigale needed

The handling is different enough to be noticeable. I haven't had the bike on the track yet but my route to work gives me enough fast / slow bends to get a feel for the bike and as I rode the same route on the 1199 it enables a bit of a comparison. Corner entry seems more positive and confident, the front stiffening up under the influence of the DES and helping to settle the bike before tipping in. I seem to be carrying more corner speed and definitely more exit speed - the wheel control helping to keep the front down whilst winding on the power out of fast 2nd gear exits whilst still cranked over. Its simply confidence inspiring. I thought that the ability to clutchless downshift would be a bit of a gimmick but again the bike seems more settled on approach to the corner, it is a joy to use and is silky smooth but be warned, the autoblipper on downshifts and closed throttle along with the pop through the Akrapovics on upshifts becomes somewhat addictive.

The not so good bits.. Im not sure that the redesigned front fairing offers any more wind protection for your head (I'm 6ft) but it's a sportsbike, not a tourer. It did the Panigale stalling thing a couple of times before the 600 mile check up but not since. I don't have time to look at the lean angle meter, I'm generally too busy looking for the apex / exit or potholes so Im not sure how useful that will be - I'll fit the the DDA for the track day and see if that changes my opinion but that's about it. Its not even tried to cook me yet.

Its the best bike I've ever ridden. Roll on Brands Hatch track day.

Did you have to give away your Tricolore for free or was someone dumb enough to buy such an inferior machine? LOL...

Totally agree , nearly 2'000 miles on now feckin love it
I'm right behind you with around 1,900 miles on mine and It's obscenely good, isn't it? Now that I am getting used to the twin after so many years on I4's, I have developed a feel for the engine.

Cheers.

The 1299 is so far ahead of the 1199 it wasn't a difficult decision.

With all the mods I did to my 1199 it still wasn't a difficult decision. The most difficult part for me was trying to get my heart rate back down after the test drive so I could say "Do you take American Express?".

I can't wait to go head to head with someone on a 1299.

Ljuice the result will depend on who the better rider is. Not the bike. Let us know how the meeting goes. I understand your point.

Scrapper...I have 14' 1199 with full termis and race rapid bike module..love my bike but debating on getting the 1299, it sounds amazing from what I read on it. Was is it really a easy decision to get the 1299 and that much better than your 1199 with all the mods? Just looking for input, I'm ....... addicted to these bikes.

I think that was his point to begin with...

For all this talk of which bike is better, 1199 vs 1299, 14R vs 15R, regular Panigale vs SL, unless one of you guys is Chaz Davies, Troy Bayliss, or someone similar better is just a matter of getting more seat time and/or instruction.

I encountered a guy on a SL at a track day a while back. Slower than me everywhere except in a straight line. Yeah, his bike is technically better than mine but it also would have benefitted from a better rider so as to not waste all that technical superiority. Who wants to be a slow guy on a fast bike?

Fzr100098 did u get rapid bike module on your 1299? Just curious, since I've heard it's an awesome bike without it still.

I haven't had the rapid bike module fitted to the 1299 as I don't think it needs it. I had one fitted to my 1199 and it made a difference but I'm happy with the 1299 the way it is.

I really didn't think it was going to be that much different but honestly it is.

1) The bike handles really well and hold the line better.

2) Power through out everywhere, power comes on really strong at 5K versus 7-8K with the 1199. I would say the bike is more linear than the 1199 but power comes on in three stages Low, Mid and High its weird because there is a very small gap between low and mid and mid and high not like the I4's where the its very linear.

3) The rear doesn't slide or gets too loose on you.

4) The main thing I was really impressed with was the electronic suspension is soft enough for street riding then firms up with aggressive riding. Many people including myself switched from Flat to progressive on the 1199 for the streets so you wouldn't chip a tooth or compress your spine but my 1299 I keep it on flat with zero issues. I spent a lot of time setting up my 1199 suspension to get it somewhere in between street riding and aggressive canyon riding and getting to know how many clicks for the track. With the 1299 suspension setting are automatic.

5) No throttle surging and its buttery smooth compared to the 1199. When you twist the throttle you know what your going to get in terms of power. No outside customs maps needed or sprocket changes unless you are racing. The thing i hated most on the 1199 was the short power band at the top you hit 8K and turbo but you have to shift 2K later. With the 1299 the power really starts at the mid and pulls all the way through red line it has a lot wider power band than the 1199.

I actually rode the 15 R last week and its a great fast as hell bike but believe me when I say its really a track only bike. The power band/curve is for the track compared to the 1299 the max HP is at higher revs than the 1299 and its stiffer. Love to have one for a track only bike not much fun on the street like the 1299 but for the track junkies the 15R is it.

ScrapperX you absolute champ, can you please give us a little bit more of a summary between the S and the R in terms of power delivery, acceleration etc on the street - are you still happy to have gotten the S over the R for the street?>

The R=SL The bike is insanely fast (Top end). It's still unhappy at at slow speeds and it begs for fuel and air like all the 1199 models. When you give it fuel and air its happy and loves being close to the redline like a race bike should. The 1299 is just smooth and doesn't beg for fuel. the 1299 doesn't care if you're in the low end or top end.

When Ducati posted the specs of the S and the R I knew the R was going to be a beast but majority of my riding is on the open roads and Canyons now where I think the S is a lot better street bike hands down and the R is made for the track no if- and- or buts.

I think the S has better HP/Torque in the low to mid than the R but power up top the R has a little more or wider band which allows the bike to pull harder or go faster because of the extra RPM's it has. The R will walk the S down at top speed.

Just like the older R it spins very freely and fast due to the light weight flywheel but can be a pain in the ... if your not careful and stall the bike at a light/stop sign like I did a few times. The 1299 you don't have to worry about that quick spin down.

The R is an awesome bike but I prefer the S for the streets. It doesn't take much engine mods to make the 1299 a faster bike than the R. Just send your stuff to Ben Fox to lighten the crank and flywheel, thinner head gaskets to bump the compression and boom just like that!

Thanks so much - I just rang my dealer and said to pull the S out of the box, fit all the CF and the Akra, spring it for my weight and let me know when to pick it up. Then off to Protwin Australia for flywheel,, crank, head gasket and tune :)

I foguresd I should chime in 1100 miles on a 1299 S had a 1199 with alot of mods. I just had the full akrapovic installed. The bike is faster and alot smoother than the 1199. It corners better holds a line and droves out with insane amounts of confidence. With the exhaust the bike sounds evil, at idle not much more than stock, well a deeper bite of you will. The suspension is sublime works perfectly. I can honestly say without a doubt it is a much better bike than the 1199, leaps and bounds.
