Oil consumption??

Just a thought, but wouldn't oil wash up the bore everytime you went down a hill (or even braked hard) given the near horizontal placement of the leading cyclinder.

That was a good read.

I have recently bought a Panigale 199-S and it is drinking oil?
I have owned a 916, 996, 1098-S and a 1198-SP non of which burned oil like this bike.

I will now start a log book on when and how much oil I use, FYI I just topped it up by 1300 mls.

I can run 6000 km without top up (oil still within min - max of the sight window), or add 200 ml at most. Bike has done 19000+ kms.
Oil leak in cylinder head has been fixed by ducati shop at 14000 kms as soon as it became apparent.
Bike runs for commuting and frequent trackdays around one or two a month

Yea my bad..... when I bought the bike the level was all good, as I mentioned I have never had a problem with oil burn on any of my past Ducati bikes, actually none of my past bikes.
I do 90% of my rides on country roads and ride hard, last ride I thought to myself the bike is noisy, checked the oil level and parked it up..... Just topped it up and all good.

But cannot help think WTF....

i just realised my oil was quite low below the bottom line, thankfully it hasn't ridden it more than 30km in 4 months almost.

I topped it up with the only thing i had, FUCHS Silkolene Pro 4 full synth. but now I'm starting to wonder if that was a good idea or not.

I had no ay of telling what the original oil was, but last serviced by a dealer so I can assume its synthetic and the same weight.

Am I better off just doing a full oil change? or will it be right for its next service in a few months?

You'll be fine. Especially if you aren't racing.

It's possible that the engine drinks oil faster when it's filled to the top of the sight glass. Many engines do that.

It's also possible that coasting in gear at high RPM can suck more oil into the combustion chamber. My Mustang drinks very little oil, despite it's huge ring gap. But on a track day, it drinks alot! The common denominator: Running to the red line before a turn and letting off. Lots of RPM, LOTS of vacuum in the combustion chamber pulling oil in.

Just because a random LS1 engine appears to drink no oil. Doesn't mean that it does not. Something has to lube the cylinder walls and piston rings. Our LS1's on the track, will drink 2 quarts in a single track day. Some sticks don't show it well enough.

Normal oil consumption is not a bad thing.

Thanks all.....

It will now be a weekly check from now on. I checked with a mate who just bought the 1199-S and he too had no oil, well no oil on the sight glass so I feel easy knowing it is the norm.
Cannot comment on oil burn as not experienced this before, even my past Honda Superbikes had their oil changed after each race so never an issue.

Cal.

...
I personally wouldn't like to be pouring 300V down its throat in the amount you describe, given its price point. I would rather be tipping in some cheaper oil that's going to do the job well in this magnificent engine:)
I'm a bit of a tight ... but i'm not cheap, and just carefull with my money.

...Without specific data, i would be inclined to think Motul 7100 as opposed to 300V is likely to be better suited to longer OCIs and by extension will likely have lower volatility. Thereby have less tendancy to burn off as is what happens with all oils. It's also cheaper:)

I've been dealing w/ this oil burning to a small extent. I was going to try 7100 for my pre winter oil change (usually a 300V guy) On Amazon a gallon of 300V is the same as 7100?

At my last service, which was also my first service, the dealer recommended shell 15w50 ultra4t, rather than 10w40. Since then my oil consumption has been greatly reduced.

My R uses a lot of oil. But it has 2 ring pistons so that's kind of to be expected. However, it's kind of the same rate of use as what the rest of you are saying.

Think of your Panigale as your mistress, you can bet your ... that something that good looking and that fun to ride will be very high maintenace :D

Extreme oil consumption

Hello all, I just purchased a Panigale R 2 weeks ago and I have a huge issue with oil consumption. My bike had to be topped at 100 miles. I use Motorex 15W40 and I added 300ml or 12 fluid ounces.
Just a couple days ago I hit 300 miles and I had to add 500 ml. or 18 fluid ounces. My dealer in San Francisco said it is not normal and they will take a look this weekend. I called Ducati in Italy and they told me they're unaware of the Panigale R consuming that much oil. I spoke with Teresa and I even have a record on email of our conversation. She said, "we have not heard of any Panigale R's consuming oil. Yours is the first case we have heard about. Please take motorcycle to dealer for advice."
