Plastic water pump drive gear ........why Ducati ?

Horrific pile of szwarf down in the pick up screen in the sump ,
not only desiccated plastic from Audi's .... water pump gear but left over 3 bond gasket sealant .
It was almost completely blocking the oil pick up .
I think I have dodged a massive bullet by inspecting further into the engine ,
the oil filter was clean with zero sign of debris but if this had impinged the oil pick up any more it would of been game over .

What a setup by design to have your bike overheated and or starved for oil thus catastrophically damaged! I am glad you went with steel gears , I am doing this as we speak...like I said make sure to coat those gears with some assembly lube or oil to help with lubrication on first startup.

Well I hit the track yesterday with some trepidation , the steel gears are definitely noisier .
Its quite a distinctive metallic noise reminded me of the old Honda VFR If I got the model right with its gear driven cams.
So it didn't detonate and bike felt good .
Even though it is fresh oil I will drop the oil today and inspect for any sign of metal from the gears settling in.

I wonder now what came first (chicken or egg) , was the partially blocked oil pick up to blame for the plastic gears failing due to oil starvation or did they fail first and then block the pick up ?

Well I would think that gears failed first because if they didn't there would be no plastic shavings stuck to the pick up tube! As you stated bike is running good and that's what you wanted. My RC51 ( in Australia VTR SP2) had gear driven cams and I LOVE that whine noise when bike is running!

Just removed cover on my bike to replace plastic idler and water pump gears with steel ones. 2100 miles on odometer and this .... started failing, people get proactive and change this crap!!!
I must add that water pump gear looks good but idler gear is failing. This could be because it is driven by steel gear which is much harder of course!

Looks like you just caught it in time Bo ,;)
to add to your reply to my chicken /egg , it was not all disintegrated drive gear in my oil pick up screen!
Most of the gear parts I recovered in the first oil change .
The screen was mostly three bond and mystery crud so would recommend anyone to inspect as a regular maintenance schedule .
Blocked or partial blocked pick up could be catastrophic to an engine .

Yes sir, that gear was on it's way to give up the ghost. Checking pick up screen is next!

i don't full understand the oil circuit. what is about the scavenge pump mesh?
hopefully this is less important.
i think about to throw the whole .... out and go for a electric water pump, not sure.

Just cleaned my oil pump pickup screen and like Dezi but not as much I also found some mysterious stuff stuck to the screen. I have no idea what it is!

Bo ............stop feeding granola bars to your bike :)
Cricky thats a good find , love it when potential issues are found before they cause mayhem .

Granola bars are healthy, I thought they would be good for my bike! :)

Hi All,
I have had a major breakage on my trackday 1299. The outer piece of the primary gear has self destructed and pierced the outer cover. Unfortunately i was slow to realise and completed two laps under high load whilst the gear was grinding into the cover. Upon inspection have found the pick up screen 2/3rds clogged with metal shavings and plastic. The waterpump idler gear will need replacing. Cover is being repaired, will remove and inspect/crack test primary drive and driven gears. Will remove vertical cylinder cams (to drop cam chain) and look for metal contamination. Overall its pretty bleak. I wonder if anyone has heard of this happening before.? Bike has 20,000 km on the clock, probably 5000 on the track. Always serviced and clearances done at 18Km.

That sucks Neil ,
catastrophic failure .
Can you show us what happened to your outer cover.
Did you get back to the pits under your own power ?
Was there any indication while riding power loss or noise oil loss ?
If the screen caught most of the debris hopefully you haven't damaged anything deeper .

If the screen was 2/3 plugged for 2 laps of high rpm wouldn’t ya wanna look at the bearings?

first things to check are both oil-pumps.
i know this:( from another bike, but its imho almost the same.
