my fiche, 1299s, 27/05/2015 says
part 3:
17021322A
19/11/2010

has the Part number changed maybe?
what material is that (small sub-gear)?

A tip to threadstarter who do trackdays, check torque of the airbox bolts very often if you dont do it already.

Yikes, that’s some scary .... right there! How did that effect handling when those loosened up?

Chris the one that came apart is number 5 on the fiche 17420581B

$100 part

*I thought it drove the oil pump. He made it 2 laps without so I’m lost

Trying to upload photos, (too big). It's not the oil pump drive gear, it's the outer spring loaded scissor gear on the primary gear, item number 3 in diagram above. (hard to tell on the diagram.). It's a 2 piece gear and the outer part self destructed.

Was super lucky that the engine didn't lock up. Oil light didn't come on so assuming the oil flow wasn't restricted enough for that. Still more investigation to be done on engine.

In the second picture below the primary gear no longer has the outer scissor gear attached. Desi's bike looks the same and I'm hearing that some race bikes don't run the scissor gear. Scissor may not be the right terminology, damper might be better.

Oh wow...

Yeah I thought it was the inside gear. Knew it wasn’t the primary (but it sorta was huh?)

You musta .... when you saw that screen. That would make my stomach feel like it was in my throat. Feel for you man

Guessing complete disassembly is in order? I like the suggestion of inspecting the pump. At least the pressure pump. Fer shur. I would want to look at bearings and crank if it were me. Wonder what kind of load those pieces going between the primary and the gear on the basket put on yer mains???

What a mess. I wonder how much vibration that thing really removes????

Neil, Dezis bike and mine had same crap inside oil pickup screen. I think that crap has to do something with assembly because it really doesn't look like it is made out of dame plastic as water pump gears, or plastic chain guides are made of...
On another note that gear disintegrating, that is freaking crazy how, why???

I think that crap has to do something with assembly because...
Ducati baby teeth/chips from mag cover combo!

It’s ok Neil, I pissed Santa off this year too...

Everything is gonna be ok tho man. Fix the cover and slam it back together

And then ride it like you stole it!

If it does not grenade before summer I might have my 1350cc kit finished just in time : )

The right Term is not clear i think.
i found "preloaded double pinion", "tension gear", honda calls it "sub gear".
anyway, this is nothing new and well known since...ever
Where is the problem, why should that break?
it has no forces higher then the spring load to transmit.(+vibrations of course)
that's why i asked for the material.
doesn't look like steel and i don't believe aluminium. titan maybe?

as always i hope my writing is not too strange to read and understandable.

Thanks guys, really appreciate your input. Chris is spot on with pre loaded tension gear. All I can think of as far as cause for the gear breaking is I have been having quick shifter issues with missed gear changes under high load. Also the occasional back fire on start up. This may be overloading the gear.

I'm sure you have nothing done wrong.
if there was a overload, the part is just to weak.
or, a piece of whatever has blocked the gear?
is any of the debris magnetic?

I wonder what sort of testing Ducati put these motors thru? Is the dampener something they added because of an issue they encountered, or just some engineer’s ‘good idea’ ?

*like oval shaped ports, throttle bodies, and exhaust

Any chance that crap is oil filter media? I heard there is a problem with K&N filters coming apart - common enough that they are banned at certain tracks.

The green is the motul 300v oil. Most of the filings are the inside of the clutch cover. Plus some plastic from the wp gear.

You said it was miss shifting a bunch

I would think that could be part of the reason it came apart?

Had you pulled the pan and yanked the baby teeth?

Maybe they (and/or pieces of the water pump gears) got between the primary and clutch gear and started tweaking things?

nattapatten , long term (well 12 months and 1000 track kilometres) and no issues at all ,changed oil and filter no szwarf in either so that would be a positive long term outcome in my books .
I have been running two bikes hence the low kilometre increase on the Pani.
