R Engine Failure - Warranty Denied

How were you able to determine the root cause of the failure? IOW could the shaft have come loose as a result of catastrophic engine failure?

So, nobody is going to get to the bottom of how warranties are a rip-off anyway in this thread.

Instead, can you provide info to owners of '13's as to any preventative measures that can be taken, and how big a job it is to get at this offending part and torque it down or replace with '14 parts? Worth doing?

Thanks!

How exactly is a warranty a rip-off? Did you mean extended warranty coverage?

Once you race your bike you have zero warranty

What happened was a gear vibrated loose and started shredding things in there. At least thats what I was told.

If you're interested to find out exactly what happened I would recommend asking your dealer to get in touch with his dealer to get you an exact cause and any sort of recommended checks.

I went over this with my dealer with the engine diagram and parts list.

Starter reduction shaft has never been updated. Not sure who's telling you that it is now pressed.

Steve Rapp recently blew up an 1199 motor at Willow Springs also, but this happens with pretty much all makes.

Again, you're getting third hand info from me. If you want exact info contact his dealer. They can tell you exactly what it was. They tore the engine entirely apart. My apologies if "starter reduction shaft" is not the name of the part in the fiche.

I'm sure the part was redesigned, not sure there would be any beneficial motive to lying about that.

I'm sure you're intention is not to lie, but when you're discussing serious matters like this, we need to be very careful and extremely detailed.

You stated in the original post to watch for the "Starter Reduction Shaft" and I did. Now you're saying that you are not sure if this is the part?

What IS the part that failed and has been updated for 2014?

I would be 100% sure of something before posting something like this.

It was what I was told. I don't need to be sure of anything. If you're concerned for your bike, give them a ring or have your dealer do a little more digging. Try the gear the shaft is attached to. The gear was ultimately what came loose and started everything like I mentioned.

I have ZERO skin in the game, so I don't really care. I am just trying to show people Ducati's doesn't care about the people representing their brand. He was the leader in the region's Supertwins class... Not anymore.

If people (read; you) are going to get hostile I will just stay out of the thread, and in the future not try and help anyone out.

I am attaching the 2013 and 2014 drawings for the 1199 - Electric Starting and Ignition

I think it would be best to consult your respective dealers for clarification on this.

Sorry about the size... I am only a junior member.

Didn't mean to come off as hostile.

What's your friend's name that blew the motor?

If you're going to be making wild claims that is squarely aimed at damaging a vendor's reputation, it would be nice if you did it with a little accuracy.
Otherwise, it is little more than scaremongering.:confused::confused:
I'm not sure if people seeking clarification regarding a perceived reliability issue which you raised based on hearsay could be considered as being hostile.

Meh, there will be a wrecked S or R on Ebay soon. Buy it for it's engine.

All bikes have issues. A friend just lost his ZX10r to a failed main bearing. Think bikes fail alot on track days? Go over to a car forum. Cars kaboom far more often. (Vipers get the ultimate smokey kaboom award at most tracks)

As for warranties? Haha. Pipe dream. Them days are gone.

The ECM records a PID for just about anything these days.

-Race launch mode for Nissan GTR or Ferrari 458? Sets a PID every time. You can only do that so many times before your trans fails. Should be common sense, but it's not.

-Onstar GPS puts your location in the infield of Daytona? PID.
- 100mph? PID.
-150mph? PID.
-redline? PID.
-ignore check engine light for dirty fuel pinging? PID.
-haven't used the clutch to shift in 2 years? PID PID PID.
-missed a shift and bounced off the rev limiter? Oh heck yeah, that's a PID.
-maxed out accelerommeter PID, and bent the bump stops and the frame on a Ford Raptor? Kiddn? Right?

Even if you don't say "race". They got you. It depends on Ducati and your dealer relationship. But they aren't going to give away free engines, the jap bikes, and car co.'s don't either.

Nope. Just a streetbike and rider with a few weak track days. B or C group.

Kawa told him to pound sand. $3500 to repair! Maybe $1500 for one of our locals to repair. Engine didn't even kaboom, just knocked really bad.

143 miles is easier to sell to the manufacturer than 6000.

I don't know how this thread got the legs it has gotten, but it has.

For those of you who think your street bike is a race bike, you're wrong. For those of you who think a race bike should be covered by some sort of warranty, you're wrong. For those of you who are confused by the difference, go racing and you'll find out in a hurry that a decent engine build for a Ducati costs nearly as much as your beloved street bikes.

Dayum!

Amen!
