The obvious answer would be not to ride on salted roads. But since that might not be an option for you up north I can see that the salt attacks mostly the uncoated metal parts. I have used 'Boeshield T-9 Rust & Corrosion Protection' to minimize the effect of corrosive agents.

Pull it all and hit it with the wire wheel lightly.

I've ridden motorcycles in NY for 17 years and winter / early spring riding before a good rain is and has always be no-no with a new bike for me.... But it's too late for that.

Some say there is a reason for the corrosion that alloys get to protect the integrity. but if that were my bike, I'd be pulling the fairings and seeing how the rest of it looks.

i did pull the fairings off, everything is okay, except the posted pics.

that had to be some relieving news. try some warm water and an SOS pad. but, be careful not to hit anything that's coated / anodized too much with the pad as you'll dull it. but those nuts from the carrier and axle should clean up w/ a little work.

Its new again

Ok WD-40 kicks ...! :D
used a chain cleaner brush.

You need to coat the bike in some ACF-50. That should help protect it.

I've used wd40 to clean the exact same metal but on snow plows and it can come back. Def use a protectant.

hey bro, more power to you, i know you have urge to drive best bike in world, but with all that salt on the road, and being from area where we have salt, im happy just leaving it in a dry, warm clean basement... well maybe not as clean as some of the guys here in their MAN CAVE GARAGES!!

You guys should buy a Gixxer for your winter riding. This is a sad thread to follow...

why is that?
i dont think the Duc is any less capable in the winter than the Gixxer, and i dont think the Gixxer is a lesser bike than the Duc either.

if you love a bike so much, dont you want to ride it all the time though? riding in bad weather have taught/trained me alot in reading the bike limit/behavior as well as mastering the throttle control, knowing how to push a bike in less ideal condition will only makes you a better rider.

parts are replaceable, if it rust and i cant clean it, i replace it with new, too bad i cant afford a Desmo, if i have one, i would ride it the same way as this 1199, no different. i dont put bling parts on mine, because im spending all the money on more-than-regular services and wear and tear. i my bike can speak, it prolly said" my life is well spent"
dif strokes for dif folks IMHO
