Was about to order some oil for regular maintenance and was thinking about running some auto specific oil instead of motorcycle specific oil. From what I understand is we used to run motorcycle specific oil because of the friction modifiers found in car oil makes a wet clutch slip. I have a dry clutch and the friction modifiers would be welcome since I only have two piston rings instead of The usual three. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The other consideration is that on a motorcycle the oil is shared between the engine and transmission. I would suggest sticking with a high quality motorcycle oil.

Car oil in a bike engine is not good since in a bike it’s also in the transmission. Bike oil is designed so thst the polymers don’t shear as they pass through the gears. Car oil is not designed for that. In short, the bikes gears will grind up the polymers and destroy the car oil. But go ahead it’s your bike.

In theory you're probably right because you have a dry clutch. However this is a question best answered by Ducati engineers, not techs, or the rest of us.

My bet is your correct so find out and make us both right;)

Typical car oils sold today do not have high levels of Zinc/Phosphorous, basically your anti-wear additives. This is because they poison the catalytic converters, and newer engines are rollerized in the valve train reducing the sliding friction and the need for them. Motorcycles mostly have some form of direct action bucket on lobe or finger in Ducati's case, these benefit from the higher Zinc/Phosphorous in motorcycle oils. I attached Mobile 1 info for comparison because they are one of the few that will freely give the Zinc and Phosphorus levels in their products.
