Soon to be new owner... advice needed

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I've ridden high powered bikes on the street my whole life. For two years I had nothing but an R1. Ridden in sub 30 degree weather and pouring rain. ABS wasn't needed. I will say it again. This bike has a rain mode for cutting power if you need abs you shouldn't be riding a panigale. 600cc or less for you.

This forum is so in love with ABS I have a feeling very few of you understand just how little abs would help in an emergency situation. If you are leaned at all abs won't save you if you grab brake. In the dry you don't need abs unless you ride like a complete moron. In the wet someone would have to cut out in front of you, the rider would need to stay perfectly straight and apply brake. Then most likely hitting the car. That almost never happens. Most riders try evasive turns or lay it down.

Honestly its amazing how many normally smart riders fall in love with a useless crutch and blindly recommend it. Its false confidence.
Cool story, bro. Do you have time to tell it again?

I was in on ABS when if first came out, however it looks as though I have misunderstood the engineering and development over the years. Could you please explain how it works? Thanks,

OK, didn't know the ABS was such a big deal.... will take under consideration. Thank you

I think I know where you are coming from, however price is one thing but I am sure you understand value. I would not personally get less than an S and when I factor in other things that I want, I come up with X $s. Looking at it this was the best value IMHO is the R. I am in waiting now....

The more I think about it, maybe I will just get the fuking R. Sometimes after some reflection, I realize how cheap I'm being. There's also some poser guilt knowing I have no business on a bike like that...

I don't like to spend other peoples money for them, but it sounds like you and your wife do quite well. I define a good hobby as one that people spend stupid money on. I define stupid money as money that makes no sense to most of the world, but it puts a smile on your face.

OK, today is the big day. I'll be viewing Duc's, MVs and Ape's. Of course, I'm already leaning toward the Duc, but will see what "speaks" to me in person and after test ride.

I have to admit, this thread has disappointed a bit. I like the idea of getting $4-5k off an brand new 2012 S, but no ABS and you guys have me now 90% convinced I should have it. I may have to go to Austin to see a Tri in person. In the end, I will try to fight my cheapskate instincts and get the one I like the most. As Antihero would say, "the one you lust after and would regret every time you see it if did not buy".... or something like that. Wish me luck...

I'll let you know later what end up with!

Went in thinking I would get one Italian supermodel and ended up falling for a different one. I look like a big ape on all of them. The Pani was the lightest and scariest (sounded best too). It was also the least comfortable for my 6'6", 40yo body. After 20min my butt and wrists hurt and the right thigh was cooking nicely in the San Antonio heat. The RVSR was comfy and the best value. The F4 carried the sex appeal of the Pani, but seemed like the worst value. It was the largest of the 3 sport bikes and with lower rearsets may have been the most comfy.

I loved the look of the StreefighterS and it was the most fun to drive around San Antonio (by far). I didn't know until one of the techs explained, but this one was bling'd out with full Termi, better clutch slave, fender eliminator, bitty little blinkers, intake, dyno tune and 3k of carbon. Anyway, $2k off for being left over 2012 and paid a little more than 50% the value of the extras. I don't know how much I believe, but after I bought it, one of the mechanics said it had 20hp midrange over stock and 10-15 on top end. Either way, it's a blast.

I'll be heading over to the 1098S forums now. It's been great and thanks for the help.

If it had abs I would have made the same decision

I know... I'll make sure to get it on the next bike. Never had it on a bike before, so don't know what I'm missing. It was so pretty and fun. Plan to raise the handlebars an inch, touring seat, puig shield and do some longer TX hill country rides that would have been brutal on the Pani. I wish the wife would agree to both..... I'll keep working on it :)

I felt the exact same way you do right now. Bought the R and couldn't be happier ;) Just do it :D

From the sounds of it you make the right choice and got a great deal. You got the one you would be able to enjoy the most. For street riding the naked bikes are hard to beat. Ride safe and enjoy.

Thanks guys/girls. I still love the Pani, but the other half will only put up with one bike right now. I had to get the one that had the performance and sex appeal to keep me excited and be comfy enough to go on 3hr rides with a friend. I'm looking for info on aftermarket bars, seats and windscreens right now....:)

Where are you in TX since your 3 hrs away. Close to the border like I am or on the other side of San Anto. Meaninig on the other side of Austin.
The bike really depends on you, I mean it's only 3 or 4 things different from the Base besides the paint job, which you can do up your own paint job to personalize more as some do. I take it you plan on using one as a track bike since your getting to and yes the ABS is a good thing. HP is the same anyway so I wouldn't place a bet on the Tri 2012 not wanting that much.
Anyway, I know the guys that work there, John the Sales Manager, Nacho the Shop manager, Ben the tech along with Carlos the sales rep. But, it's a lil steep on the Tri.
