Suggestion 1299S <-> V4

Most people like to justify to themselves and others why their current bike is better than the new one on offer . If they weren't considering changes you wouldn't have to or bother .
I do it all the time but always end up with the thing I said was worse than what I already have . It never has been worse

ordinarily I'd say you're right. but the V-4 is a massive change. The 1198 and 1199 are quite different, but they've got more in common with each other than with a UJM.

When I get a full test ride of the V-4, no doubt I will find certain aspects to be better. And I am in a "purchase" year, based on my buying cycles. But it's mostly to state that very little about the V-4 appeals to me personally. Now, had they kept the monocoque airbox. If the motor made 100lb/ft of torque. If the styling was as much a home run as the 1098 and 1199 were when revealed. If all of that had happened, I'd be posting about the V-4 I'd have recently taken delivery of.

...and there are aspects of the 1198 that were sacrificed to create the Panigale, and I'm talking about the torque hit. That's gone forever, so those folks were right to keep their 1198s. My 1299 might make significantly more torque than the 1098/1198 bikes, but it sure as hell ain't as thrilling/frightening.

Good points from both you and wilkson.

Had I not have 16R, and was in a market, I think I would get a V4 (I think). I am fairly sure I will get a V4 down the line but just not right now. For once in my life, I am not seeking the newest and greatest thing out there (maybe I am just getting more mature but likely not as I am immature as hell).

I am just enjoying my current 16R. Never say never but I think I will keep this bike but plan to add V4R if its a bad ... and or something special model. :D

I have both. (1199R and V4S). After riding the v4, my beloved R feels ancient and lazy and heavy. The two are completely different. And I'm not saying you're wrong, but opinions are a lot more credible after you ride it. Not just from reading a brochure.

Going for a test ride on Saturday.

The reviews have grown on me, but I'm still not a fan of buying a new bike in the first year of production. And I still don't think the V4 compares aesthetically to the V2. But if the bike really does blow me away from a ride-ability/power standpoint then I'll consider pulling the trigger.

I have owned. 1098r , ridden 1299s fully sorted with full akropovic system . Lots of character and torque but if you want the best then new v4s is light years ahead . Power from 5,000 to 14,000 rpm. Stronger upper midrange than 1299 even with full system . Handling in a different league but ultimately if you are an average road rider get what floats your boat . Test ride everything . I did and still got a new v4 . Close second was aprilia rsv4 rf

I much prefer my 1098R engine with the bigger mid range, though I like the pani R package as a whole.
If I had to get rid of one, it would be the pani R disappearing.

From the reviews I've read the V4 isn't as nimble as the V2 regardless of the reverse rotating crank.

Having had a 09 R1 I know what lazy and heavy are...compared to that isn't.

Can't argue with that and I agree . The V4 has made up for it on stability though .

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I was a previous owner of a 1199S, and had a V4 Speciale on order. All of the recalls and problems have pushed me into looking at other options and even considered the HP4Race. I only ride at the Track so I have no opinion on the street. I have ridden the 1299, V4S, HP4Race, and S1000RR at the track. I found the HP4Race to be the best motorcycle I have ever ridden but a logistical nightmare, no insurance coverage, prohibitive replacement part costs but utterly sublime bike, I have not ridden the Superleggera. The V4 was much more stable than the 1299, I thought it sounded great with the Akra system almost as good as the 1299, the 1299 had an Austin racing system which sounded crazy awesome so not a fair comparison yet the V4 sounded great and much better than the other bikes out there. The turn in on the V4 was much more like the standard bikes and midcorner correction was just not as easy as on the 1299 but a much more stable ride also the electronics were smoother on the V4 with less of the wheelie craziness on the 1299. I don't really worry about lap times as I'm not that good of a rider but I have no doubt I would be faster on the V4 or even the s1000rr. If I were to buy a 4cylinder bike it would be the the V4 panigale but wait a while till they get sorted it out........a lot. I found the 1299 much more fun to ride not as fast or even as sophisticated but the 1299 was a lot more fun and even scared me a little......it made me want to ride it more. Again just my opinion, but it got me looking at the superlegerra which is a ton of money and so beautiful I would ride it like a grandma. So that made me look at the 1299r final edition which has different suspension that I have not experienced. I also hear that with the race exhaust the FE is quite a different machine with more midrange similar to the V4, again I have not ridden one but it makes you wonder if it might be the sweet spot. I'm also a Porsche-file and track my cars frequently so maybe it's that whole rear engine craziness that makes me want to work harder on the track. Side note - I think that getting a bunch of crazy opinions from lunatics like us is helpful in that yes make your OWN decision but it's always good to hear things from other people because they might be thinking of things you never did. Get as much info as you can, take it for what it is worth, and make up your own mind from your own experiences. Have as much fun with what ever you decide!

Do you think you may have a different opinion if having a 16R rather than the original?

Maybe, I can't tell you honestly as I've only ridden the 16 R a couple of times. I can only compare to what I own. But I remember riding the 16 R and felt it was less raw than the 13 R. Could be just my bad memory...

Went for a little test ride today on a base V4 and was really impressed. It is SO much more nimble than the 1299S. The first turn I took it was immediately apparent. I still think it's a far less beautiful bike, but I feel like the agility will make it much safer all things considered, so I put down a deposit.
