Track days and crashing

If you've got your own gear, I'd recommend bringing it, more comfortable and better fit on you. At the very least bring your own gloves and helmet.

I also opted for their bike. I figure it would be a good chance to ride the BMW and have fun also. I want to have fun but also push little bit (nothing crazy).

Are you bringing your own gears? I am not sure if I want to bring my leather suit, gloves, helmet, and boots. I may bring my own helmet and maybe boots and gloves? Probably wont bring leather suits.

So, first I am stoked (Australian for happy) that at least one track day company bothered to respond to this thread, given the number of pani owners who have or intend to take their expensive asset to the track and also to improve their riding I'd like to have seen more...

I have not responded to the initial opener because I was waiting to see how many of u had an opinion and where the response came from...

I'm a little surprised at them lack of interest from the UK, but pleasantly surprised with the response from the US... Keep it coming... This thread is really important... To everyone who wants to be a better rider..

We have CSS, Ron Haslam, Rapid Training and many others running track schools here in the UK.

Some have more track time than others, some run over several levels over several days and some are an intense 3/4 of a day.

What I would say is if one wants to ride with any gusto, do a proper training day on track and use your own bike. It is the only way to really get confidence in what "your" bike can do. Using another bike just tells the brain what that bike is capable of.

(PS Bowdy, just because I come from the UK, it does not mean I will have a different view from anyone else!)

PPS: If you are insured with MCE Insurance they do track day cover for £99 per day.

Totally agree, given I'm from the UK, the comment was based on knowing these track day or ride schools exist but I'm surprised so little has been mentioned about them... There is a lack of schools here in Aus which is why I started the thread in the first place...

Great to see some info up on the forum now...

Thanks

Much appreciated

We have CRT and Race Academy. This coming april I will do the two days racing license exam. Not sure I will do the DCR and/or OW Cup races this year but it is just fun to do this. At 49 it was time for me. Having fun is the major thing.

Thanks Bowdy for throwing up this thread! I've read some of your suspension threads and one day I hope to understand half of what you were writing about and more importantly how I'm going to translate that to my riding. I'm looking at personally signing up for a few track schools to help me "create" good track habits on the track that I can use to make me a better rider on the street.

CaptCF: I saw the Keith Code school as well and I'm on the fence about it. I think the 2 day is a mandatory their bike I want to use mine so that I can better adapt to how I ride it.

I'm eyeballing Roger Lyle school for a few sessions at Summit in WV and perhaps Code when he comes to ViR.

In the meantime it's just riding and reflecting while reading Twist of The Wrist 2 for me. Figured it's as good a place to start as any.

Maybe this thread will just turn into a sticky up top with school URLS?

You should also read nicks other book. Sport Bike riding techniques, I got mine signed at YCRS lol. I always loan it to new riders.

I'm telling you don't criticize before you try!!! ;)

...I've always said i'd ride ..... on this lol

Some of you may not approve of this, but I would rather save somebody injury or worse by sharing...

Click the book and enjoy the PDF.

And Twist of the Wrist I and II.

What's not to approve of, it's why the thread was posted in the first place... +100

Pretty cool for you to do this. :)

I have the hard copy on these but its nice to have on a digit too. Thanks much!

Speaking of crashes. 2 today at CSS in LV. Both were low sides around the same hairpin. One was right in front of me like 10 ft, guy went in too fast turned too early, went wide and grabbed a handful of brake. I didn't see the other one, but they pulled everyone off the track and were pissed. They said they have about 2 crashes in a calendar year! They wouldn't let them ride the track anymore today and took them to do something else, off track.

I am doing CSS 2 day camp end of March. Really looking forward to that one and want to get better and be safer rider. After all i have seen it sounds like a really good value for the money. safety first :)

2nd ever track day yesterday, Moto TT event here in NZ. There were spills all day, nothing too serious though. I'm amazed at how much more comfortable I was this time out, corner speed is coming up etc. Although I do feel like a drag racer on the straights, the Pani eats nearly everything, only got beaten by a Busa in a straight line.

The level of safety on the Pani is pretty trick, I watched a guy in front of me run wide, panic, hit the front brake, lock up and over he went. Had he had ABS, wouldn't have happened. Watching my GO PRO footage the DTC light is flickering away on nearly every corner

Anyway have booked a CCS day for next month, starting at level 1. Had the option of doing the 2 day event but am going to put what I learn to use before taking in too much info. Hopefully complete level 2 by the end of the year.

For my b'day, my wonderful wife gave me two days at CSS at Barber in May/Jun. I've read every book I could lay my hands on (some more than a couple times) and had always felt (reasonably) comfortable on the street (35+ years). But, after doing my first track day without any personal instruction, it wasn't difficult to realize that a structured course was needed. I have to say that as a 'mature' rider, one of the things that sold me on the Code school was the video testimonial by a 75-year-old gent who was obviously pleased with the experience and quality of instruction. Sounds good to me! BTW, I will be using my Pani for this event and look forward to learning on my own machine.

Anyone else from the forum planning to attend this session?

I've done:

CSS Levels 1 & 2 (Laguna Seca)
CSS Levels 3 & 4 (Phillip Island)

As others have said, well worth the money. And, Phillip Island was well worth the long flight - it's a beauty, especially with the new surface (though it eats up tires pretty good!)
