if there was a R with mag wheels , must have been the 996 or 998... , before it were SP's - perhaps the 851/888 SPS with the carbon fueltank had them... :)

Desmo - which is an "R" just a "RR" came with magnesium wheels standard. I know of one other (not officially an R but should have been) but there might be more models.
 
After riding a base and a R I'd say that the R is the only Panigale worth owning. For $1K more than the Tri you get several $K of CF bling, engine internals, etc that total to about $15K. Ducati Bellevue worked over a Tri with the "R package" and that's what it added up to. Yes. Some dude not only paid MSRP for a Tri, but another $15K to make it ride like a R.
 
I've heard some owners say that "R" is just too much for the street...
