Trading 1199S for 1198S?

Hello everyone,

I'm here today because lately Ive been getting this urge to sell my 2014 1199S and buy a 1198S or a 1098R. It seems like a very silly move to essentially downgrade but there is just something about that era of Ducatis that I absolutely love. Namely the styling and the old school feel of the Ducatis. I was never a fan of the design of the panigale. Its not ugly and actually very beautiful. But it never made me want to get a poster of it hanged on my wall and drool over it all day. I ended up going with the panigale because it seemed like the more sain option considering it was a new bike with warranty and more refined as well as cheaper to maintain in the long run.

Am I being stupid by wanting to trade in my bike for one of those? Anyone here ever had the same thoughts? How does the technology in the 1198s compare to the 1199?

I don't race and mostly use my bike for commuting and track days. I know those bikes are uncomfortable but frankly so is the panigale. I'm young and can put up with it.

Have you ever ridden one? I think if you had you wouldn't even be asking this question. Especially for a commuter.

I used to own an 848 EVO and as I recall that bike was actually more comfortable than the pani. The pani runs much more hot and I have burn marks on my legs from it.

I miss my 1198s but my 1299 is such a lovely bike to ride road and track.

Once you go Pani you never go back.

I wish I could have them both.

I had an 848 Corse, felt the need for more power, test rode an 1199S. My first ride, which was 15 minutes, I did not like the 1199 at all. Couldnt wait to get back on my 848. A few months later I took another ride on a 1199S (different bike than the first one I rode) and took it for about an hour. The 2nd 1199S was good, I enjoyed it.

I traded out of my 848 Corse for an 1198 Corse.

I spent about 20k for the 1198 Corse, could have gotten the 1199S for about 2 grand less at the time.

So I spent more for the older tech bike. Why? Maybe its because I was used to the Trellis frame bikes, maybe I felt the Panigale was too soft....maybe it was because the 1198 blows my mind and the 1199 felt somewhat reserved.

Still got the 1198, still would like an 1199 (or 1299)......

Just keep what you got and add to the fleet :)

If you are really interested in doing this, AMS Ducati in Dallas has two - 2008 1098R - for sale for $22k and $20k with 85 and 300 miles respectively.

Give them a call and tell Marty Christian sent you.

Too bad you aren't considering having both. Trellis frame and dry clutch Ducati is something to have and experience.

I originally joined this forum because I was interested in the 1199 Tricolore. I already had the Tricolore monster S4RS and was looking for a more spirited ride in the twisties in the Catskills.

Once I compared the 1098R and 1199 engines there was no comparison. The 1098R has more torque when you need it and unless you are on a track you can't ride the bike at redline all the time which is where the power is. After I rode both bikes, forget about heat with the Panigale which is ridiculous, the 1098R handles far better and more secure than the 1199. I think it has something to do with the wider handle bars for the Panigale. In fact, I find my 1098R is more comfortable and safer than my monster at twice the speed.

Would I commute on my 1098R, only if I didn't have to wait in slow traffic because the bike will over heat +219F if not allowed to run. Lastly, the 1098R/1198 platform is rid of any early production woes and as we all know from this forum the 1199 suffers with too many. Lastly, I never found a Panigale that could keep up in the twisties but that could be the noobs riding it.

For my money, $ for $ the 1098R is the best Ducati you can buy.

I was never a fan of the design of the panigale. .

That's because your a starbucks rider, who does not have speed or motorcycles in your blood.

Am I being stupid

As stupid as they get, like troll stupid.

I'm calling BS here.

I owned an 848 and the panigale is night and day more comfortable. Troll alert here.

You never met a real rider?. The Panigale has evolved forward not backwards, it is so much easier to throw around and power delivery perfect. Without being a damned torture rack.

The 1198 series was a great bike, but anyone complaining about a Panigale is usually doing so because he is a slow MFer

1098R handles far better and more secure than the 1199.

Calling BS

You are talking about personal preference, and I question tires and proper set up.

Given tires and set up are done perfect on each bikes equally, the old bike does not hold a candle to the Panigale. OR people would still be using the old tech, and their not for anything competitive.

You'd definitely leave me behind. If you really want to know the truth about your riding, try out a trackday. Just do us all a favor and don't sign up for the fast group your first time out.

Given its been some years, but I will say the 1098/1198 was such a more committed ride, and far harder on the body than the Panigale.
It was a bike that was the typical felt like crap until you pushed it hard, Track speeds.

Personally the Panigale is such a better bike in all regards, except for the heat coming off the exhaust. I would love to have a 1098R, still a gorgeous bike and capable of getting you excited i am sure.

So I've had a few duc's, the only one I didn't list in my signature was my 848 (crashed on wet WA back roads). while they all have their own personality's, I could never say that one is definitely better than the other...more like: the each excel in different areas.
As much as I hate to do it, I'm finally selling my '09 1198s just because I hardly ride it anymore. its a great bike, feels solid, runs just fine around town and on the track, but for some reason I always pick the 1199s or Multi when I go for a ride now. I know I will always regret selling it, but whatever.
None of this helps to answer your question, but I don't think that I ever could. you just have to try them all, and decide what YOU want.

love them both. different bikes for sure. 999s next. ;)

I have both 1199R & 1098R in my garage & 1098R wins hands down every time. My opinion is Ducati has lost its way with the panigale engine.
MV Augusta is my next bike.

For what show and tell?

The 1199R is much faster, handles more precise, and easier to track at speed.

ANYONE who can push both bikes close to their limits choses the best tool for the job. The 1098R while a bitchen ride, does not compete anymore, and that's why people dumped the old torture rack and moved on.

Its not even about one bike verse the next, as the Panigale keeps up with the competition, the 1098R cannot given equal riders. For 10,000 less

Beat it, troll elsewhere.

Have you ridden a 1098R?

There is no comparison, the 1098R beats the 1199 every time except at redline. Unless, you only ride on the track and power slide through everything, the 1199 just doesn't have the torque to keep up. Also, the 1098R is the most comfortable motorcycle at speed I have ever ridden. All the Panigales are tortuously hot, that is why the Superleggera 1299 no longer has the same exhaust configuration. I do think the Panigale might be more comfortable for a large rider given the wider handle bars.

Again, $ for $ the 1098R is the best Ducati has ever made!!! But boy do I want a Superleggera 1299 :)

Interesting thread, I'm not a fast rider, probably middle of the road somewhere but I test rode both before buying the 1199, loved the low down torque from the 1098 but when you throw them around a bit the 1199 was just a much better handling bike, much quicker response. Just my observations from an average rider.

This.

The 1x98 bikes were the most uncomfortable things on the planet. They were absolutely brutal on your hands/wrists.

Hanging off of them was very awkward also because of the way the tail section was shaped.

Of course if the OP likes one and wants it, then go for it. At the end of the day, each individual has to decide what makes them happy. But going from an 1199S to a 1x98 anything would be a huge downgrade in performance, comfort, electronics, chassis, everything.
