Hi Everyone,

I just picked up a new V4S yesterday from my local dealer.

When I went to leave my office last night to go home and it was turning over but not starting. It finally started after about 5 minutes of trying.
The same thing happened this morning.

Funny thing is it also sounds like there is engine knock once it does start (until it warms up)
Also, it seems to only be an issue when the engine is cold... after I'm able to start it once, it seems as though I can turn it off and start it back up again effortlessly.
I'm worried about damaging a brand new bike that I am trying to "break in"..

Luckily, I let my dealer know earlier today and they've already taken steps get it in to fix it... very frustrated, though...Less than 100km's on it...
I've owned two 899's and never had such issues.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me. It wouldn't start early in the morning on the second day of ownership. I tried starting it ten times and I could smell the fuel so I then hit the starter with the throttle wide open and away she went. I brought it in and they didn't find any codes or problems with the O2 sensors. I put about 400kms. on it the first day so I know the fuel was good. It just didn't like the cooler weather start. I also ran it in stop and go traffic when the temp was 34C. and boy it didn't like that either. It was like the cylinders were cutting in and out with the bike trying to buck me off of it. It finally cleared out when I was able to get moving again on the highway. The dealership said he hopes they have a new mapping by spring time because they've had a couple of them do the same thing including their demo unit...

So we wait....

these Italians are such screw ups, when hot the first panigales would not start and we all bypassed the smog carbon canister, solving the issue.

Sounds like yours is as leaf said rich, could be many things at this point, sounds like you/dealer will figure this out soon enough.

Make sure and post back details for others

I'm having the same issue. If I leave it for a week or so, it takes me 5 minutes to start the bike. Then after that and even the next day, it will start right up. Its super annoying.

I had this issue a couple thousand miles in with my bike. The first few times, it was a throttle position error. Make sure the throttle is fully shut when you first turn on/start the bike. If you have a helmet or something hanging on the throttle and it's slightly cracked when you turn it on, it might not start correctly.

After that, it didn't happen again until I was forced to get gas from a station I'm not a big fan of going to. Got some issues with starting, didn't know what it was, they eventually resolved themselves. A week or two later, had to get gas from there again (it's right outside my house, so if I push it a little longer than I'd like, I'd have to fill up there on the way to work), and the problem came back.

Ran some seafoam through the tank and never got gas from there again. The problem went away and hasn't come back after a couple thousand more miles. Seems like the fuel injectors on this bike are very, very sensitive to bad gas and clog up easily.

What steps is your dealer taking?

Please do, I'm convinced our bikes are the same issue. Do you have throttle spacers installed?

I posted a video of mine doing it in the v4 Facebook group.

No throttle spacers... everything OEM

Will let you know what they say... hopefully I hear back from them today.

Please do NOT put seaform on these bikes, please. The fuel system is electronic controlled. Seaform is a very strong agent, a lot of plastic parts in these machines. Seaform can damage micro mesh filter... all sorts of stuff.

So apparently the tech says that there's nothing wrong with the bike- they are sending it back to me today.

Hoping that it just works... I just bought the thing- don't want issues, just want it to start when I need it to.

Will post up if problem persists... hopefully it just runs and I can move on with enjoying my bike.

Seafoam doesn't destroy plastic, rubber, or anything really. It's a petroleum product, has no added cleaners or anything. Gasoline has more cleaning agents in it than seafoam does. All seafoam does is break up the sludge from the byproducts in gasoline, it isn't really a "cleaning" agent.

I dunno where you got the idea it can damage EFI systems, but most bikes nowadays are EFI and I've never heard of seafoam damaging anything in them. The only possible downside of seafoam is if you use it on something with a ton of buildup; you can possibly harm the motor if you have a ton of debris in sludge in your fuel system and suddenly run it all through the motor.

It isn't really necessary to run it through any modern bike because most of them don't have the mileage to require it. However, in my case, I got terrible gas from a station (likely old gas sitting in the bottom that had sludged up) and needed to flush that ........ out of the fuel system since it was obviously messing up fueling. The V4 only has a 4 gallon tank, so it isn't difficult to run through an entire tank in just a day or so, meaning even if seafoam could damage things, it never sat there long enough to do so.

Cars are EFI as well and seafoam is great, especially used for storing gasoline over winter.

My bike sat for about a week and this time before starting it, I just turned the key on for about a minute or so and let it sit. The bike started right up.

Quick update:
Tried to start bike up earlier this week (the first time since I've had the problem) and it was having trouble starting again... turned over but no start.

I remember reading that someone had a similar issue and they were able to start it after leaving the gas lid open before firing it up (then closing it before riding away, of course). I tried it and it worked right away!

I immediately rode it over to Shell and filled it up with 91. It's been starting up fine since... I don't know lol

If that’s happening the check valve that’s supposed to let air in but fumes out as the fuel is drawn down is bad. Pay attention to see if you hear a whoose sound when you open the tank lid. If you do there is a vacuum in the tank and it’s impossible to pump gas out. The Aprilia V4RR was notorious for this same problem. Most people just removed the whole EVAP system.

Ducati dealers are aware of the this problem and won't tell you cause they don't know ethier at this point

Hi everyone, need help
Bought a bike from auction , 400 miles panigale v4s.
So far:
Battery replaced✔
Map sensors replaced ✔
Fuel pump primes✔
Spark plugs replaced✔
Injectors good✔ according to the dealer
Carbon canister removed✔
Computer finds no errors...
Cranks but doesn't start...
I dont hear confidence in dealer voice, telling me it might me ecu, but I don't like the word might.
Any ideas? I'm getting a little bit nervous...
