Bolt cleaning and reconnaissance

I read somewhere on here where someone had put a bearing in to the foot peg mountings to smooth up the shift feel so took out the bolt to do some measuring.

The bolt is a heavy little sucker at 27.1 grams. Have to get a lighter one made.

Of course as I always get sucked into doing, I cleaned it up. Nice and shiny again.
Just use some Solvol Autosol, from Germany, some nice spare white rag so you can see the black come off and polish away. Use a small bit and a cordless drill to get to the inside of the head. After 10 mins = Brand new looking shiny bolt.

BTW Torque for this bolt is 25nm :)

What rearsets is this on Brad?

I still have the OEM rear sets. I have changed the footpegs to LSL soon after I got the bike back in 2012 and I think in about 2014 I changed again to some really grippy Gilles. The bolt is just the OEM one.

Had a look on the Podium site and they sell a Ti gearshift/brake pedal pivot bolt.

Installed a set of Joker Machine concealed bar end mirrors and progrips today. I think they look awesome.

I was looking for mirrors for a while and didn't really like what was out there until I came across these.

Next I will be taking out the headlight to integrate some turn signals and install a DP tall windscreen.

Another 52.9 grams

Here is the saving going from the screws supplied with my Marchesini magnesium wheels to Proti Ti

They are a lot prettier too :)

I may have to do this with my Mag wheels. Photos installed please and which ones you ordered? making sure I get correct ones. lol

If you can't get the 8mm countersunk bolts from Proti then RaceBolt has them. If you have mags then you will have Marchesini rotor spacer adaptors which will need them bolts also can get the 8mm x 20 rotor bolts with allen heads.

I went racing at NOLA Motorsports Park this weekend! A 10-hour drive, but I needed to get the hell out of winter. As a result, I just spent $800+ on tires and oil to get ready for the next trackday in Birmingham! (Another 10-hour drive.)

It is an M8 x 30mm to take into account the spacer. The spacer is 7.5mm wide so you cannot use the OEM bolts. I will get the correct Proti code and post when I get home from work. No pic yet as I have the wheel away having a custom spacer made which I hope will be lighter than the one Machesini sent with the wheels. I am then going to get the spacers anodised gold like the wheel colour so may be couple weeks before any pics.

Hey Brad so you running stock wheels or Marchesini mags? The stock OEM wheels don't have spacers the rotor bolts down to the wheel. It's a no no to run long bolts from the rotor into a spacer then to the wheel. The correct setup is the Marchesini rotor/wheel spacer kit if you have Mags which 5 bolts holding spacer to wheel then another 5 bolts holding the rotor to the spacer.

I have new Marchesini M10RS Corse magnesium. You are correct for the first part but not for the second unless they have changed them. They must have changed the design as my wheels (purchased in June 2017) only have the 5 holes. The spacer holes just line up with the hub and rotor. I have had the wheels all this time and only fitting them now.

When you buy the mag wheels from Marchesini they supply two spacers which are 7.5mm wide. These go between the hub and the rotor on both sides. They supply a 30mm long bolt which goes thru the rotor and the spacer into the hub. So it is only one bolt. I just replaced the crappy looking ones supplied by Marchesini with Ti ones in Gold.

There are also two spacers supplied by Marchesini which are the axle spacers They go between the bearings and the inner side of the forks.

I have a super light axle from MVS and I purchased some nice light T6061 rod stock and a friend of mine is machining up some new spacers which I am hoping will turn out lighter than the Marchesini ones. I will put some pics up later.

Here is a pic of the M8 that Marchesini supply with the wheels to attach the rotor. It is the one on the left. Ugly.

The bolt on the right is a 20mm long Proti that I replaced the OEM with couple of years ago.

The other photo is of the spacers and the rod stock of T6061

You can see the length difference on the ruler of the bolts. :)

Got the telferizer for my sat nav
Bought some front axle protection (not the rear as I am using a paddock stand to store my bike)
Would love the Pramac rearsets, but wonder if they are worth the money.

Hey Brad so sounds like the new M10's have a slightly different spacer setup which I am surprised they went with longer bolts which still a no no on front rotors. My old M10's I am currently running were actually from a 1198 so the spacing is different and has the stronger more correct rotor/spacer bolt down setup. Yes the axle spacers that they provide are 7075 I believe so I ended up machining some out of 6061 as well and with my Podium titanium front axle its a fairly light setup.

Hey Mick,
I hope mine don't come apart then. I am not racing so hopefully not too much stress on them. The stock setup just uses one bolt thru the disc/rotor. Were the 1198 set ups different ? I never had one so not sure. I will post some more pics later.

Yeah if Marchesini did indeed go that route on the new wheels it's failure waiting to happen. They had it correct all these years and worked so hopefully they don't have rotor bolts sheering coming off the straight at the race tracks.
