I am waiting to see, however since I would never be able to use 80% of what it will be capable I doubt that I will jump.

Makes more since to buy an R or even a Tri.

Wasn't directed at you tri, just in general, everyone had their own agenda and will do whatever they want in the long run.
If I had the means I'd probably jump on one but as it stands not the best time.
Not trying to get on anyone's case just a statement

I haven't seen much hate on this thread IMO. He's the one that posted his original plan to use his 401k and I've seen mostly just friendly advice to simply take a step back to see if that helps gain some perspective that it's just a bike. In the same vein, I'm not trying to rain on his parade, just making a fellow forumite aware of potential surprises in total costs that could easily add an addt'l 5% to the MSRP. Since he'd just mentioned that he was juggling insurance savings to help fund the deposit, I thought I'd give him a friendly heads up. Don't see anything wrong in that or any of the perspectives given as constructive advice.

Sure there's been some needling going on but that's the give and take of putting personal info out there on the internet - you'll get some good advice and you'll get some grief. But at the end of the day I've mostly just seen advice coming from an earnest place. To me, with the the help of some moderating, I'm seeing this place become more of an online community lately than it ever has in the past.

I appreciate the concern but I am planning my finances keeping a certain buffer of money in mind which I just want to set aside for an emergency and don't wanna use that at any cost..

Moreover I dropped my R once and had a claim for it which GEICO ended up settling with $4000 and the dealership themselves didn't want me to rush into repairing.. since that money was paid directly to the dealership, that will come of use towards the deposit. The eventual repairs will be done when I trade in the R which will be deducted from the money I get for it.

I will basically put 9K from my pocket for the deposit

yeah give it 2-3 years and the novelty of a $65K bike will have worn off (after something that costs 1/3 of the price comes out that is better). Problem is the payments will not have worn off unless you can swing being able to buy it outright.

Wise financial people will tell you never to finance a toy

Then of course you know it's gonna start leaking oil or melting fairings in true ducati fashion..lol.

I want to be first in line to buy his SL in a couple years when he is tired of it and needs something better.

Ahh, I see. You were looking for some type of styling alteration that would more effectively differentiate it aesthetically from the others. That does make a bit more sense considering most of the more substantial advancements in the bike are somewhat hidden from view.

When I first heard reports of dealers not being able to take their eyes off the top secret bike I thought it may be possible that some type of styling alteration was incorporated into the design. This picture surfaced about the same time which led me to initially think this could be the direction they were heading

Exactly. Maybe I was hoping/expecting too much and was disappointed. :D

I figured as much:)

You're response to my earlier post looked like it was prejudiced for some reason so I didn't respond;)
It looks as though you've been caught up in the hirdy-girdy of it all.
The best part is you didn't even know it:D:D
Ha, Ha, Ha.

Sorry how long have you owned this R and it's been dropped already!?

It seems as though he wants the top of the line thing. Its his money and if it makes him happy, then go for it is my opinion.

However... of course there is a however!

He did menitoned about how he was worried about messing up the CF fairings so he was going to get a stock fairings...

Why would you get a 1199 R SL to make it look like a base stock? if you are so worried (and cant replace it without having a second thought of $$$) about messing little things, I wouldnt bother getting it. If you barely afford the SL, probably not a good thing to get it.

Its like some people probably can get 200k car but its not the car but maintaining cost $$$ that people dont realize.

What did I tell you before? I made it clear but you never listened, I said dont get the R as your first bike, your lack of experience will cost you money and I thought you will drop it and you did. Did you listen to my other advice about getting an ear defender or your still stuck to your old ways of following your friends and doing things may be under peer pressure?

Once again, dont waste your money on the SuperLeggera, what is wrong with you? Is it some Indian thing where you have to show off and be always better than your friends? Are you from Punjab in India or what? I know a few people from there and they have similar image issues and always talk big and are in debt trying to afford the latest and the greatest - or on the other hand all the build up of frustration is coming out after you have had your divorce and you just dont care anymore and just following your desires which YOU WILL REGRET later on, believe me.

I have owned it for over a month.. it happened right behind the dealer.. it was a wet day and there was some loose gravel and the front tire slipped somehow and I tried to hold on to the bike but let it go on the left side..

The scratches are minor on the fairing but my insurance decided to cover it.. in any case they say u end up dropping a bike once and then you end up being super careful after that.. in a way it happened early on so I kinda weeded out the bad experience..

Atleast it happened with the R and not the SL

I do wear earplugs all the time.. thx for the advice on that.. the exhaust sound is loud as hell and the earplugs do help.. been doing that since day one.

I will wait till EICMA to see what perks u get with the bike before taking the plunge.. am gonna hold off until then. I haven't paid any deposit nor have I repaired my R so I still have options

Did your dealer make an offer on your R as a trade????

Yes.. they did. They were offering me around 26 or 27k for it

I'm trying to stay out if this, but seriously:

You joined in mid August, saying you couldn't afford a bike. To weeks later you bought an R and paid 37k w/accessories...which you've already damaged. So, your going to lose 10 grand, commit borderline insurance fraud, and go another 70K in debt....all in the span of two months. At what point do you plan to wake up? In my opinion, bikes like the SL are for guys who cut a check for them and be done with it. They're not for post divorce identity crisis guys unless they're asking for financial ruin. I'll stop posting on this now, but seriously man, THINK about what you're getting into here.

You guys that are encouraging him should be required to pay his bankruptcy lawyer down the road:D

Acowsik, enjoy the SL man. You want it, think you can swing it, then have at it. I look forward to seeing yours!!

Guys do you really think he's going to take some screen name from the internet's advice? He's going to do what he wants, and that's fine.

Whether he listens or no is irrelevant...Most members are offering sage advice imho and that's all we can do as a community....

I know they're trying to help but it seems like some are nailing him to the cross. I'm just trying to do the same to our fellow members and remind them they're wasting their time :)
