D16RR owners got preference and then it was really up to your dealer and if they feel you have the $$$ to put down for one.

It's simply a marketing ploy to make people feel special but if you walk into a dealer with your 13% deposit they will take it off you as long as they have their allocations confirmed which should be firmed up shortly.

Exactly! Thanks for a hint of reality on this thing.

TBH idk what they r thinking.. unless they are dumb enough not to know that

1. You need to have been invited first to access the Project 1201 website on or before Oct 18. Ducati obviously needs to have your information and know that you are an interested buyer.

2. You need to currently own a Desmosedici RR, Panigale R or a Panigale S Tricolore to be given preference.

My dealer contacted me and told me that I needed to put the deposit down ASAP last week itself and I was not in any position to do it.. seeing that they have sold out over 75%, these will be picked off pretty soon anyways

These aren't hard facts as you're trying to represent them or you've been told. The invite to the website was far from exclusive not difficult to receive. The preference to Desmo owners doesn't trump cash in hand with serious buyers. And the 75% "sold" number doesn't mean anything; "allocated" is more accurate. Many dealers have "reserved" SL's under customers' names without yet having to collect deposits. Once that time comes up, like you, many will be out. No doubt that these will sell out, but I think your dealer is using the exclusive card to sell you or is caught up in the hype themselves. My source is from Ducati.

IMHO, this might just be the panultimate twin that will ever be made by Ducati. Audi is all over Duc mgmt. for not being on the podium and without a total redesign, I dont think they can get much more out of the Superquadro. Thus, the Superleggera focuses on weight reduction which will be needed when the move to a nessessarily heavier V or (yes please)L4 comes.

As for the chassis, not sure I agree with some of the complaints of "nervous" corner behavior, that is just poor setup. Most I see have spring preload wrong and that is a big part of it. Once I nailed the setup, the Pani is in a league of its own. BTW 6'1" 245lbs.

Seems that the Pani likes biger people, can any svelte peeps comment?

and there I was thinking I was a special customer !! your point makes a lot of sense as the dealers are not really going to be bothered as long as they get the sale ?

I have a really good relationship with my dealer and consider the team as friends but at the end of the day I guess business is business and a sale is a sale !!

I agree with you there.. my dealer and I get along really well and while they do need to get business, they are very honest and clear when it comes to the way this bike was being handled to the fullest of their knowledge.

Even if someone walks in with cash to put down the deposit, I was told that Ducati reviews the application before taking in the money to assure an allotment else it is rejected, in which case the deposit will be fully refunded by the dealer.

If anyone else has put down a deposit and has any of the bikes which are given priority.. congrats and good luck

Again, how do you explain Motocorsa dealership in Portland advertising they're taking deposits for the SL on Facebook? I have a hard time imagining any dealer or company turning down a buyer who is able to pay cash regardless of their prior Ducati status. I think your "friend" dealer has brainwashed you.

-- if you have the desire/money.....and they haven't been sold out (100 units is not really a lot) and there is one available....it will be yours....your dealer would simply dial up their Ducati rep and find out if one is out there

-- Ducati is setting up their marketing perfectly for the business of selling motorcycles......as exclusively as possible....and "limited" and numbering only goes so far.....so invitations, like certain Italian car companies do (ferrari), seems to be the next level of generating consumer enthusiasm - it will position them nicely for future model offerings...the desmosedici had considerably more units available, so they actually became easy to find.....the SL, seems like with only 100, may not be as easy

This whole thing about the invite is totally meaningless and the articles from Moto.it etc seem to be just an eyewash if the first 500 people with the cash down are assured a bike..

Now you're catching on:D. Seriously though, I would bet the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It's just not as "exclusive" as many have been led to believe. Bottom line is they need to sell them.

Price probably dictates a certain level of "exclusivity".. but being the ultimate poser 1199 I am sure they will sell... Cannot wait to see one outside Starbucks...:)

Unless made in jest, I don't understand the poser comments. Posing is dictated by the way an owner uses a bike and is not something that could be directly attributed to the bike itself. If the assumption is that anyone who can afford the bike wouldn't have the skill or desire to actually ride it then I'd have to disagree.

If I saw one outside of Starbucks I would say "poser".... This is a track machine...

Just a thought, after or intra ride, a coffee is just what I need. Starbucks or not! Well, unless there is a sugarfree Red Bull avalible.

While I get the inference, it is very unwise to judge a persons "Poser" status by his caffiene beverage presence :p espicialy since the coffee trade is dominates by Starbucks.

Also, I see some value in the following:

Chicks like coffee-> I like the Ladys -> Chicks go to SB because it is there ->
I stop in for refreshment and potential Ladys -> Some chicks like bikes -> Coffee makes chicks who like bikes want to talk to owners of said bikes = Digits

Boy I like the digits!

Yes it is better suited to the track, but then why even give it a plate hanger and signals?

I love my Pani and the SL is simply more powerful, significantly lighter and with better suspension.

So its my Pani, just faster lighter and tighter with the same (actually more) adjustabillity. Why not ride it on the street? I ride my slower, heaver and less well suspended Pani on the street and its awesome, witch makes the prospect of the SL on the street awesome+!

As for starbucks, they have a stranglehold and who cares whee you get your refreshment.

No one is or isnt a poser till you look at the tires and if you ride letter to letter thaen you are not, anything less it is up for debate.

Well to a certain extent I am using Starbucks as a euphemism for anywhere a rider goes just to park and gloat... But My point is that this is a track machine and is probably going to be awful on the street...

very much agreed the SL will be in its element on the track, but that wouldent stop me!

Using any bike for the sole purpose of parking and gloating would most certainly qualify. I'm sure the Panigale SL, like any Panigale, can make a fine street bike.

Not sure about that....and what a waste...

I'd encourage any sportbike owner to explore the more extreme range of their bike's performance capabilities in a track setting but, having done both, I must say there is something to be said for swiftly carving through back roads immersed in scenery. One of the things I most appreciate about the Panigale is that one needs not be on a track to enjoy many of its great features, including its terrific ergonomics, superb handling, and extraordinary braking.
