The great thing about motorcycles is that unlike today's cars, it's still 90% rider and 10% bike. You could put Rossi, or Lorenzo, or Marquez on an SV650 and they would be faster than 99% of the riders out there on modern day literbikes at the track.
Whether the 1299 is faster around a track than the 1199R is mostly irrelevant for most riders; skills, feeling confident in the bike, suspension setup, tyres, power delivery... All of those things will make more of a difference than which model you are riding... A well set up 1299, set to the rider's liking will be faster than an 1199R that's not as dialed in, hell, a well set up 600cc SportBike that's well set up will be faster than a 1299 that's not for most riders.
I was faster at all the tracks I ride on my Triumph Daytona 675R than I was on my BMW S1000RR, until I got my S1000RR dialed in and got the suspension set up correctly. Once I DID get the S1000RR set up the best it could be, I was only about 1 1/2 seconds a lap faster on the S1000RR than I was on the Triumph at Thunderhill (both bikes on Pirelli SC2 slicks).
For me, I love my racing and my trackdays, but feeling a connection to your motorcycle is the most important thing for me.. I have that passion for my 675R, but I always viewed my BMW S1000RR more as a tool, or a weapon than as a passion.... I'm hoping the 1299 will be a weapon, a tool and a passion for me...
