1199R vs 1299S - Which is better?

The great thing about motorcycles is that unlike today's cars, it's still 90% rider and 10% bike. You could put Rossi, or Lorenzo, or Marquez on an SV650 and they would be faster than 99% of the riders out there on modern day literbikes at the track.

Whether the 1299 is faster around a track than the 1199R is mostly irrelevant for most riders; skills, feeling confident in the bike, suspension setup, tyres, power delivery... All of those things will make more of a difference than which model you are riding... A well set up 1299, set to the rider's liking will be faster than an 1199R that's not as dialed in, hell, a well set up 600cc SportBike that's well set up will be faster than a 1299 that's not for most riders.

I was faster at all the tracks I ride on my Triumph Daytona 675R than I was on my BMW S1000RR, until I got my S1000RR dialed in and got the suspension set up correctly. Once I DID get the S1000RR set up the best it could be, I was only about 1 1/2 seconds a lap faster on the S1000RR than I was on the Triumph at Thunderhill (both bikes on Pirelli SC2 slicks).

For me, I love my racing and my trackdays, but feeling a connection to your motorcycle is the most important thing for me.. I have that passion for my 675R, but I always viewed my BMW S1000RR more as a tool, or a weapon than as a passion.... I'm hoping the 1299 will be a weapon, a tool and a passion for me... :D:D

If VR told me the 1299 was faster than the R, I'd believe him. Because of his way of pre-running GP tracks:

Well said.

so many people don't understand this... well put

The 1299S will easily smoke my '13 1199R on electronics alone...with all the street miles I do that matters more than raw power. Am I upgrading? No.

500rpm, rods, flywheel, versus some pretty substantial beefening.

So tempted to say "checkmate" ;)

Wow, many paragraphs from people

Its quite simple, the 1299 will be much faster and offer its performance to a wider aperture of riders.

1) It has more power and a good deal more midrange torque, meaning experienced guys will benefit and be quicker.

2) For the less gifted, the aforementioned electronics package will allow any rider access to much more of the bikes performance, all safely managed. NO previous Ducati superbike ever has allowed this.

Think about wheelie control alone - on an undulating road, the average rider can just keep it nailed, same with low gear acceleration.

I think its a massively interesting proposition TBH and thats after initially being very sceptical of the cc increase and thinking I would take a break from superbikes

I can agree with most statements about the electronics making the bike more easily ridden fast then the previous 1199. Although, the more I ride my '14 1199R the more of the electronics I turn down or off.

The 1199R's have always done better on the dyno then the base and 1199S. I look forward to some dyno figures at the wheels on the 1299 for comparison.

My 1199R weighed on digital scales is just 410lbs wet with over 90% fuel. I am sure the new Panigale R can drop weight easily with similar mods.

Right now there is so much Marketing Hype surrounding the release of the 1299 to build interest in the new bike.

The '14 1199R is an amazing bike! The more miles I put on it the faster it seems to get. A lot of this has to do with the fact that I am very comfortable on the bike after putting on over 6000 miles this last year of ownership.

Still I am no where near being able to use 100% of what the '14 1199R has to offer. Would a little more power make me or any other mortal faster on a 1299, I doubt it.

On paper the new 1299 is a better bike more torque etc and down the pub you will win the bragging rights competition.

However in my opinion this bike does not need any more power and is never lacking in power. I wonder how many people here actually use full open throttle.

I was riding jennings this week and I was faster on my 675r so an extra few bhp is not going to make any difference to me in fact it will probably make me slower.

Another 675r owner.. Nice. It's an amazing little bike and quite possibly the best value for your money of any SportBike out there... Full Ohlins, quick shifts, Brembo Monoblocs, lots of carbon bits... I don't know how they sell it for such a great price. Sweet handling and torquey for a 600 class bike... LOVE mine.

I'm going to get some DDA data and post my results in a new thread. I know I use full throttle quite a bit. on the street, I totally agree.

I use full throttle a lot on the track!! I also think better mid range torque will help coming out of the corners, or if you get stuck in a higher gear it will pull you through. With that said MOST people will never use 75% of the power on any liter bike...In 2001 My GSXR 1000 had 142 hp @ the wheel and it was KING!!!SO what does 1 do with another 60 on top of that???? Can we say overkill!!!

Having an R, I'm inclined to say that you will feel the 1299 will definitely have more power. The 1199R is now has more of "screamer" engine with its 12500 RPM redline.

Titanium conrods aside, the 1299 will be better, especially on the streets.

Just put in an order for the 2015 R.

The engine is essentially from the SL, read the reviews, as a package it will be better than the 1299S. There's no way Ducati will allow a new upstart to unseat it's own flagship model!

HOWEVER, I have to concede I am a little apprehensive. If the 1199 R puts out 205 bhp, fast revving and fully tuned, how much can a 1299 put out with a full Akrapovic system and aftermarket fuelling/ignition module when it already has better torque and same power to start with?!?!

The other thing, if Ducati have to produce the 1199 R for Superbike purposes it doesn't rule out a 1299 R version in addition to it's range at some point in the future........

I'm in the exact same position and sitting on the fence right now, i was thinking of a SL but could not justify the cost as it will be a track bike and i have yet to read a review of the 2015 R to push me over the edge.

Comparing it to the 1299 I would like to think it will be a better bike as the price difference is not insignificant but reading the reviews of the 1299 it's sounding like a great deal.
