Around the World on a Panigale

Dennis,

Great adventure plan. Congratulations on living free and to the fullest. If you are in LA, LADOC would love to do a send off party. I have a few close friends around the world (compliments of a life behind a desk/on a plane), once you have you route planned, I'd be happy to hook you up. In the meantime, I have my eye on this beautiful Panigale abstract you did that would look great in any office of a weekend warrior.

Godspeed

Dennis,

I remember reading about your trip on ADVrider with so many emotions. So jealous of the newest and best Panigale you sat on and the amazing things/people you saw and experienced. I actually just read an entire article on your trip in a magazine with a name that eludes me now...but, it followed up with the awesome ending that Ducati offered. So great.

You've inspired me to try to take a similar trip this year. I've always wanted to see the Western part of the nation and have never been able to make it. I cannot wait for your next adventures and living vicariously through your posts.

Good luck and be safe!

I think you're crazy, but I would love to rip around the world on a beautiful bike, it's just not financially responsible for me to disappear for a long time.

I love this painting, and I want it... or a similar one.
Willing to contribute.

You guys are the best. The support and enthusiasm help make this a far easier decision for me. I can't lie--it's scary to think about what I'm doing, but it's also crazy exciting, too! Kind of feels like the first time I ran away from home.

I'm pleased to receive such positive feedback over the artwork. The Evil-looking dude has been sold already and I'm getting lots of interest in the Panigale abstract (which I absolutely love). I did two of them as studies for a much larger one, but I'm honestly a bit afraid to make another attempt. In any case, lots more on the way....I've got to work hard at this in order to avoid a round the world ride report in which 50% of the pictures are of me eating cold spam and the other 50% are of me sleeping at Pikey campgrounds in Europe.

If anyone's curious, the past work that's led me to this point can be found at: http://dmatson.darkfolio.com.

I could imagine:D
Jesus it brings back the feelings I had when I ran away from home:)

Thanks for your candour;)

I too would like to own the Panigale abstract, Even a print of it would be sweet. Keep me in mind if you run some prints. Thanks

I definitely suggest trying to do some limited run prints (reproductions?) of your stuff. Might be a good way to supplement your income :)

Color me jealous... Looking forward to traveling along vicariously, so get out there and good luck! Dunno which direction you're heading but if it's Atlantic first, I hear there's a nice little island smack in the middle of the Irish Sea that makes a nice spot to hang out in come the end of May... ;)

Evil dude sold !!

happy to say that I am the new owner of the AUTOPSY and i can only say that it is an amazing piece of work and if i can swing it; the next piece I buy will be the Pani sketch in this thread.

You guys have to realize that we are actually in the presence of a true renaissance man....there is nothing that AH cant and wont do.

I am proud to have met him and even more proud to call him Brother.

better buy these paintings as they come available...not only to help our sojourner on his way,(and to satisfy our vicarious lifestyle through him) but also to own a piece of history before his works end up only in museums as this is where they will be headed.

THANK YOU, AH !!

First painting of the trip has been sold, as RSR has pointed out. Prints will be up soon. Unfortunately, my pukka 24MP Sony RX1R and my Pixma printer simply cannot reproduce either abstract with the kind of degree of accuracy they should. It's kind of unreal, as if the painting simply refuses to be replicated.

I'll have a commerce site up soon to make things easy, but of course anyone on the forum is more than welcome to PM me with a request.

In addition to RSR, another forum member has extended an amazing offer, something I hadn't expected....more details soon.

I like the way you think. And you will be happy to know I will be at the Isle of Man TT representing all us 1199 owners. Course I'll be writing about the event, taking lots of pictures and sharing the experience so all of y'all can experience it remotely. :) :) :)

Outstanding! Great anchor for the 1st leg, and besides, it would have been sacrilegious not to be there if you were going to be in the neighborhood. Looking forward to your reports! If you get the chance before or after, be sure to work in the Lake District at the other end of the ferry. Gorgeous - but remember your rain gear, it is the UK after all.

OK I'm seriously jealous now... ;)

Problems

Got a problem. Actually, I've had a problem for quite a while. It's been intermittent, no dealers have been able to solve it. Ducati Corp. hasn't been able to figure it out and I'm kind of in the dark.

All started about six months ago. Idling after warm up (at stop lights, etc.) the exhaust would sputter and cough a little:

Panigale Misfire? at Idle - YouTube

To complicate things, my bike would idle high--sometimes with the sputtering, sometimes not. It didn't happen all the time and didn't seem to follow much of a pattern. By the time I got up to Seattle it was doing it more and more. They suspected it was a clogged cat in the exhaust and replaced it to no avail.

Hit up MotoCorsa twice when I was in Portland. They couldn't replicate the problem, but ran all diagnostics, etc. and found nothing wrong.

By the time I hit LA again it was happening almost all the time. I pulled the bike apart and found a vacuum tube (the one that connects to the front of the belly pan) wasn't connected. Reconnected it and it still had issues. I pulled the tank and viola--found the tank seal hadn't been properly seated, which could very well cause not only lean issues/high idle, but also could have pitted the valves (as air/dirt could bypass the filter).

Ducati Seattle had been the last dealer to pull the tank (while installing the new heat shield), which meant for 4k miles I'd been sucking in unfiltered air. (they also didn't reconnect the fuel overflow lines). I took it into Ducati Newport Beach. They did a leakdown test and decided to replace the heads after replacing the ECU.

Got the bike back and it felt like it'd gained an additional 20% hp and the high idle and the popping/coughing at idle was gone. Everything was fine for about 600 miles, then the engine would hang at 3000 rpm before slowly dropping to normal at idle. Then the popping started, then the intermittent high idle. Roughly 1000 miles later the bike was back to it's possessed ways.

For the past 300 or so miles the exhaust sounds clogged (kind of a restricted dirt-bike exhaust putt-putt), sometimes idles high, sometimes low, sometimes stalls 10-20 seconds after cold start, sometimes wants to stall at low RPMs (been that way since 0 miles), sometimes coughs. To complicate things even more, after one fill up the bike read that it was getting ~30ish mpg, when in fact I was getting about 20 (and I could smell fuel).

Bottom line:
Intermittent high idle
Intermittent coughing/popping at idle
Intermittent loss of power
Intermittent low idle
Intermittent stalling when cold
Intermittent hesitation transitioning from 0 throttle
Hanging idle (at 3,000 rpm) almost all the time
Sometimes really ...... gas mileage/fuel smell
Mileage higher on dash than real life (intermittent)
All things seem normal at cruising
Charcoal canister was punted (after this issue first began), vent line is vented, vacuum line is capped.
New ECU
New Heads

Up to this point the issue was just irritating and never threatened my ability to continue on my journey. But it's getting worse and now that I'm heading round the world and do not want to get stuck in Siberia. Thoughts?

Core the cats. Your bike has seen tremendous amounts of heat (long distance and track use) not to mention vibration.

Try new o2 sensors... Ever used leaded gas? Hey hate it

Good luck

Could very well be the O2 sensors. If I had gutted the cats, though--or done any non-Ducati-related mod, guaranteed that's what they'd be pointing the finger at as the cause. Never used leaded gas, though.

And yeah, my bike has seen track use and long distance use, but still, it's only at 27.5k miles. I think we all hope that our bikes have a longer life expectancy than that!

For sure...27.5k is nothing.... I really hope you can solve this Dennis..otherwise leaving on a world trip isnt gonna happen...
