F to P Linkage Change

Littlejohn - you're absolutely right on each to their own setting. I'm asking because I know if I ask my dealer to change it for me he'll say that'll be X hours of labor so give me a gazillion bucks to do it. I'm surprised that when buying a bike that cost $24k they're not a little more willing to help out with some of the extras I want. As I was told, by others more informed than me, that the bike is supposed to ship in P setting I wanted to verify this with DNA so I at least have a lever to use with the dealer. This might be a completely silly but not to me. Yesterday they told me they wanted $529 to put on the Ducati tail tidy unit!! Really?? Get lost!!

I'm fully aware it's a preference thing.

That's why I changed mine within a day of riding it.

I'm also not averse to riding bikes on hard settings. I raced at national level in the Uk for a good number of years. Though now being a bit on the porky side some would say I just ate all the hospitality.!..:D

I'm merely stating that from the messages I've personally received a good many people find the "as delivered" setting too hard.

You answered your own statement in that "it's up to the rider to give feedback to the mechanic so the correct adjustments can be made."

Had the bikes come out of the factory on the P setting fewer people would have found the suspension harsh therebye negating what now seems to be the change from F to P at 1st services.

JHP, a very well known UK dealer has already stated to Rich that the F setting is for the track.

Both myself and Rich from AR have found the P setting to be ott as for the road.
We have also spoken to MCT suspension who have already had Pans in for spring changes. Even for my weight (98kg in gear) they state the std spring is on the stiff side. Rich is only 65kg ish.

If you've got the roads around you to let you ride it on the F then that's sweet.
Unfortunately I don't have them nor do many other UK riders.

I just wish all the roads where I live were table smooth...:(

Then I could enjoy wringing it's neck everytime I take it out...;)

Holy Mother of God.......$529 !!!!!!.....

Some of these dealers must think we're mad.......

Or drug dealers.....!....:D

Really? - That's insane! My dealer installed my Ducati tail tidy and even my full Termi system for free! Well, except the cost of the parts which were enough to include the labor anyway. The young Tech stated that, as mine was the first full system to be fitted on a Panigale, he spent all day just on that. I would hate to guess what that Labor bill would have been!

$529??? to install a tail tidy??? Holy macaroni... talk about a licence to print money.
Get them to set to P before delivery... there is a higher probability that you'll prefer that setting day to day. Especially since others, like BF & AR, have done the research already.

I'm not disagreeing with you, totally agree that P is where it's at.... even for certain tracks.
I guess I was curious as to why you would want an "official" response / clarification from Ducati on what the bike should be set at.
It's unlikely they will give anything more than. P is progressive and F is Flat/Linear. (Which is what is stated in the manual)

Suppose I'm a bit disappointed in D's lack of clarity when asked directly.

Some are not as conversant with setting a bike up i.e. those that pay the dealer to do things for them or those that have just bought their 1st superbike etc, etc.

Some might just ride it as it comes and never know that they could be on the verge of nirvanna..!

Or just on the verge....at the side of the road.

And I don't mean anyone who's asked in this thread...!...Honest to god that's the truth.!

P.s: off to sleep now. Going to Nurburgring Friday, Sat, Sun & Mon. Busy day tomorrow.
Good chatting, catch you later.

Cheers.!

The more I see you the responses from you guys the more it winds me up about the prices being charged by my dealer!! So just to clarify my point - if DNA came back and said the bike should be shipped in P mode at least I can say to the dealer change it to P free of charge. I just know they will charge me the labor to do it otherwise. It's more of a principle of the matter now. I know I should just get over myself but.........

They should switch it for free, can't take them more than 20 minutes in the shop with the tools/equipment they have. Push'em on it if they start talking charging you for it, you're about to drop a huge sum of money on a motorcycle, a luxury item. They gotta remember that customer service is important, and we (customers, especially Ducati customers) talk to each other and make decisions based on word of mouth. Maybe drop a line like, "I heard such and such dealership in where ever isn't charging their customers to make this change on the bike before delivery." You shouldn't have to do this, but whatever it takes. Then find a better dealer. I'm almost 4 hours from mine, but their customer has been exemplary so far (there is one within an hour and half, and another two and half hours away). And the price I paid was $1k less than the other dealers.

Appreciate the support sir. This dealer is 2 hrs away and the other is 2.5 hrs in the opposite direction. Other than that it's the other side of the moon. I've spoken to them a couple of times and their stock reply is "we have a reward system". But if you don't ask you don't get so I'll keep trying!

Tell 'em to stick the reward system up their arse.

If I was over there, I'd help you myself.

Oh yeah, you mentioned that reward system before, it sounds like a scam! I guess if you keep going to them, you will eventually be 'rewarded'. Which, if you're like most of us, you'll always have at least one or more upgrades/mods to do at any given time. I personally don't like the rewards idea though, for situations just like you're in now. Anyway, you'll still have an incredible machine when it's all said and done. Plus it doesn't sound too difficult to do the switch, I'll probably do it myself. Hopefully someone will post a DIY thread with pics on the subject soon (hint, hint).

Spend $8000 on a bike and I can see the dealers point of view. $24k and I do not. Enough said. Let's go and ride (just wish I had the damn bike to ride!!!)

It's a bit f****d that the factory is delivering bikes set to F when their literature (the very nice hardback book that was part of the sales process) says clearly F is for track and P for road!

The first bike to arrive in Western Australia was set to F!!!

Still hearing lots of niggles from new owners, instability, head shake, soft paint, smoke, lag in low gears/revs, battery/starter problems, hot start issues....the list goes on!

Really hope I'm not going to regret this!

My 1199s was delivered in F. After about 100 miles me and my buddie changed it to P. I didnt have a stand. Its actually quite simple. You'll need a 13mm wrench and 8mm allen key. I had him hold underneath the back of the tail and lift up. As the tension released i loosened the bolt pulled it out. FYI make sure your bike is not hot as if you dont have a stand or something to hold your tail section up your exhaust will destroy the rear hugger (my dealer warned me before i did this). I pulled the bolt out, flipped the link and reinstalled it in P position. Took about 10 mins. Its quite easy and i feel a major difference in the riding of the bike.

Thank Beanflicker, I can't mentally picture how the bike should be positioned/supported while doing the switch.

ducatiguy, you didn't take any pics did you? (Are you in 101ABN? I was there was from 88-95.)

Sounds like a great way to make the change if you have a reasonably sized mate. I can't imagine supporting the backend to be to heavy, but there'll be no flaffing about. ;)

@ jjmontesanto: nope no pics didn't think of it while I did it. I may switch it back and definitely take pictures. And yeah I'm in 101st out of Campbell. @ littlejohn: he's not that big its really not to heavy of a lift :)
