Hard starting

I have a charcoal filter on my bike ?! LOL

I have the same problem. Cold start = good. Warm start = 50%

My dealer informed me (after I wrote the check) of the problem. He said:

"At our 1199 test/training day they advised us not to touch the throttle when starting the bike... BUT... if it won't start give it 5-10%."

So... Is there really a charcoal filter on my bike ?

Cheers!

Yes there is a charcoal canister. There is a thread on how to remove it. Fairly easy, 30min-1hr. Its the large square on the outermost right side of the bike. If my bike wasn't in the shop, I would take a picture for you....You will see some rubber hoses running to the box, 2 on top and 1 on the bottom. One needs to be pinched off as it goes straight into the intake points above both cylinders. The other reroutes the fumes to the bottom of the bike. I am pretty sure it is on this forum.

On another note, try to put the bike into as close as possible conditions after the canister removal and report back with the results. My conditions were 15mile ride in temps above 90F and the bike sits for 30min-1hr. Turn over and over and over, then apply throttle and hope you don't take the starter out. You will know if that happens because the next time you go to start it, it will just click and the screen will drop out. You will check you voltage and the battery will show at least 12.6V. Then hope your dealer was wiser than mine and has a starter in stock, otherwise, it will be 5-7 days for the part and install.

However, back to my point. I would really like to see for how many this has fixed the problem. I for one left it on my bike as part of my true root cause troubleshooting. Right now my money is still on the fuel pump as I have not been able to replicate the issue under the same conditions stated above and prior to that event, it repeated 3 out of 3 times, but let me know how yours works out once you get it pulled. Be meticulous in the method.

I just lost a Starter on my bike with the hot Hard starting, my bike is at the Dealer now It's been 90 plus here in Orlando, FL

I'm not sure if Canadian bikes have a charcoal cannister.

Thanks zvez. Will remove this week. I have always used those rubber covers right at the connection pint for the hose (on the intake) - works and looks pro.
With the full Termi's and comfort seat, man I love this bike. Now...to ween myself from the fully tracked Hyper Evo SP :)

That will be a lot of work in this bike - Most folks block off the pressure hose and extend the drain hose below the bike - This save you from have to disassemble the bike to get to the vacuum caps.

Anarchy, keep pressure on your dealer and Ducati to address the hard start issue. Otherwise, you may find that you destroy another starter. This is root cause problem solving. They are only addressing the effects of the real problem. Yes it is a weak starter but it would be fine if not exploited by a hard start condition.

I have not read through all the posts, but I got a call from my dealer stating Ducati has released a TSB on the hard start/hot start issue. From what the service tech told me they end up messing with the amount of fuel that is dumped during the start process. To me this sounds like a bandaid and not a true fix, but what do I do:roll eyes:

Has anyone else heard this from their dealer?

My dealer had mine a week.

The charcoal canister was removed.

No issues since. However I haven't let it sit in the sun. My dealer, and Ducati believe it's vapor lock.

When the bike is run, and kept inside it starts fine. When it's run outside, and left in the sun (30-45 minutes) it doesn't want to start.

Next weekend will be the true test for me. I'll be back in the Florida sun riding.

i'm having the same issues.
It was very bad on Saturday, while riding in 100+ F heat.
Upon trying to start it (with electric starter or bump-starting) my friends could see flames coming out of the pipes, which leads me to believe that too much fuel is being doled out when it's hot.

When I've had starting problems it typically is followed by the smell of fuel.

A possible answer for the hard start

Marvic, thanks for your insight fullness on the hard start issue. But if the fuel pump is the source of the problem (as you said you have not had the problem since) why is your 1199 still in the shop? As you mentioned earlier regarding the charcoal canister .

So I've been following this thread closely but had zero issues - until this past w/e. Bike has done close to 800 miles in southern Mississippi so always hot!! Never once had a cold or hot start issue. Nothing. Ride early Sat am roll out of garage approx 80F starts first time. Ride 7 mins to get gas and starts first time. Ride another 20 mins to meeting point and bike left in shade for 15 mins and out of the blue it wouldn't start? Finally got it going - no throttle help. Ride for an hour or so and coffee stop. Bike left in shade temps pushing 86-88F. Bike starts first time after an hour stop. See a friend in parking lot, ride 150 yards and bike into neutral and release clutch, bike stalls as if it where in gear? Talk for a few mins and bike wouldn't start again. But did when I gave it a touch of gas? Why does bike suddenly develop issues? Started bike tonight as a test and fired first time?

My bike was having hard start issue twice today. Ride, stop, won't start, or hard to start. Had to resort to giving its some gas and then ride off ensuring it doesn't stall.

As long as the battery and starter don't fail, it is just a minor annoyance. I suspect they will come up with a new software update to fix the issue so I won't freak out.

Good point. Will def go that route. Will be pissed if this isn't the fix.

It's not the fix, at least not in my case.
I removed the charcoal canister after taking delivery of the bike and have now had the hard staring issue two days in a row, along with a sputtering issue at higher rpms, she will be going into the dealer tomorrow.

I thought I fell victim to this or some electrical gremlin today? I went to start the Pani up for my ride home from works, key in the ignition, on position, thumb the starter and nothing? Rest and repeat still nothing? WTF!!!? Grab the clutch, lift the kick stand, thumb the starter again and she comes to life. :) The bike was in first gear DOH!!!!
