Heat

I also have an 848. Have only picked my 1199 up tonight and only done 10 km in the city. The heat is very different to the 848.

The outside temperature was 1 deg c. So the heat was a very welcome.

Clearly these bikes were not made to be commuting around town. If your worried about the heat you brought the wrong bike.

HUH? Are you serious?
I've got a 2010 Busa and I live in Sydney.
Believe me, the summers get hot. There is NO radiated heat reaching the rider on a Busa.
None.
j.

I agree 100 percent, 08 Busa here and it is a beast of an engine and ZERO heat whatsoever.

I definitely notice that the heat is much less apparent when wearing full leathers + skin suit (underneath).

It was more noticeable with my Draggin' jeans, so like Styler, I only ride the 1199 in full leathers now.

This does not help those of us in places like South Florida. Leathers would be the death of me in the Summer heat AND humidity.

I appreciate that it's a difficult problem - just saying what works for me; it was an observation, not a recommendation, so YMMV

The Busa is a different bike altogether and the comparison makes no sense? In fact any comparison to any IL4 is an apples to oranges situation. The exhaust headers exit the bike to the front (away from the rider) then under the engine (again as far aware from the rider as possible). The IL4 cylinders are tilted away from the rider. All of these things contribute to reduced heat felt by the rider as a result of engine or exhaust heat. I don't heed to tell anyone where the rear Panigale cylinder is in relation to your rear end or the rear exhaust header.

So, I finally got my headers back from my thermodynamics engineer friend at the Naval Postgraduate School.

If you recall, I let them take some header skin temperature measurements prior to sending them off to Jet-Hot for their polished 1300 coating.

Well, after I received them back from Jet-Hot I sent them back down to my friend for some post coating comparison measurements and I just received them from him today.

While I don't yet have the chart with the actual measured data (waiting for the E-mail) he said the difference varies by EGT (they tested at 400, 500 and 600 degrees F) and header segment. Though he did not fully assemble the header, he tested each segment individually and skin temps for the individual segments varied no more than 13 degrees F at the target temps. The segments cooled at similar rates with the two longest segments cooling faster than the shorter ones.

They used a heated gas source (propane, I believe, but I'm not sure) jetted through the individual header segments to generate the desired EGTs, pressures and velocities. I don't recall the actual internal pressures or flow velocities but they'll be in the chart.

The segments were mounted on a non-conducting (thermal neutral ceramic) mount with unobstructed flow in/out. Ambient temp in the test chamber was controlled to 75 F and external air flow was 15, 25 and 50 MPH.

-----
External skin temps averaged about 57% cooler post coating and were (measured) at: 168 F at 400 F; 218 F at 500 F and 259 F at 600 F. He tested each segment for one complete cool-heat-cool cycle with 10 mins at each target temperature.

Cool down was 78 % faster at 75 F ambient chamber temperature, 0.0 mph external air flow, no heat source, ambient internal pressure and 0.0 internal flow velocity.

-----

I'll post the chart as soon as he converts it to something I can use and post and I'll correct anything I've posted here should I have missed anything or screwed up the values I wrote down during our conversation.

I'm pleased with these numbers. I spent $195.00 for the coating. It took 9 days total including shipping time and they look great! There is no discernible dulling post test. I'll get them installed on the bike hopefully later this week and post pics soon thereafter.

I'm going to upload pics of the header as it is today in my pictures folder. COATED TERMI HEADER - Ducati 1199

This sounds promising. I'm not really complaining about the heat, as I'm used to it (I had a 848 in my past) with Ducs.

BUT... $200 is cheap for the look and performance. Jet-Hot might get inundated pretty soon considering how many people complain about the heat.

Thanks for the post!

Hi,

I found that the heat was slightly roasting my nuts so i just bought some heat wrap for $35 and wrapped the pipe coming from the rear piston and down behind the swingarm.

I would post a pic but not succeding very well. They are in my album if you want too look. It aint perfect but it sure helped with the nut roasting.

At first I said I barely noticed the heat but now with 90-105* temps outside its getting bothersome. Rode 150 miles this Saturday and bike wouldn't get below 195-200* even running 90mph down the interstate. The heat seemed to go away once stopped at lights so I enjoyed stopping instead of zipping through yellows. Bought some heat wrap as soon as I got home from the ride if that says enough. Also, I ride in blue jeans and heat out undershorts from cyclegear.

P.S. to the guys saying man up, You can go kicks rocks LOL

Lol....Must have been a header day as i just got mine back today as well and I must say they are going to look very nice on the bike done in Satin Black

You can see the internal ceramic coating in the pics. This is what makes them heat resistant and therefore the lower the temp the less heat friction making for a better gas flow, which will give you better HP.

I will put these on at the first service, so I can judge for myself what benifits they have as in less heat and a smoother running engine.

iiiofiv and Wallaroo, thanks for the posts. I'm leaning toward doing this now, was ambivalent about it before.

They look nice Wallaroo! ! Do post pics when you get them installed.

I thought seriously about flat/satin black external coloring as well. I may do the stockers in black just in case The Gubment makes me take the Termi headers off because they are "FOR TRACK USE ONLY."

Interestingly, on mine, the polishing process also polished the insides to about 4-6 inches. I think the entire segment is put into box with some sort of polishing beads so it makes sense some would polish the inside. I don't know if there is any intrinsic heat reflection value of polished over not.

Anxious to get them on and hear them with the termi cans on...

The more you push the bike, the more the heat is an issue. So unlike the previous models, stop and start traffic heat isn't the issue.

I agree completely. I have had the same experience. Most of the time I feel the most heat when I am riding hard and on the freeway at speed... Kind of strange. I actually don't think the majority of heat is coming from the exhaust, seems it is being pushed through the engine area and exiting around the riders inner thigh.

For me, when I ride with leathers, it is tolerable. When I ride with jeans (kevlar), it is unbearable.

Do the pipes need to be brand new when you send them in? I don't want to send them in immediately when I get the bike, and I'm not planning on getting the Termi headers. So I will likely need to ride on the stock pipes for awhile, then send them in some time this winter, in slightly used condition. Is that kosher?

No they don't but you don't want them beat to .... either. Jet Hot coated my old V&H system that was on my 748. It had to be 8 or 9 years old.

Will do iiiofv.....I did think about getting the chrome at first and they do look good, but I didnt think it would suit the colour I am doing the bike.

Anyway like you I cant wait to get them on.....still waiting on my bike though:(

They prefer them new. They can also do them in about 5 days, well that is what the guys said that did my job and that was Competion Coatings.

JJ: As was already said, they don't need to be new. The less wear and tear they have the better they will look when coated. They will clean them and prep the surface so there are no oils, grease or grime that would interfere with the coating process.

Like I said, I may have my stock pipes coated as well and just stashed away. Might do those in black.

Cheers
