Basically BMW still king on track and road. I know its only one review but a similar story keeps cropping up. Its questioning my purchase, what with being a bit pissed off with delivery time and it being £25k towards my 991 when i already have the S1000rr I'm wondering wether i need this Ducati.......

I can scan a post up if you haven't seen the review

scan it if you can please...don't live in the UK so can't get and for some reason mcn dont do digital copies for the ipad etc...

I had a 2007 Yamaha R1 and was not able to use the full potential.
Are you able to max one of them out(bmw/duc)?
I have never been on a racetrack, but on a german autobahn there were no enemies to my R1!
So, for me personally, I placed the 1199s order because it is the most beautiful bike in the world.
I don ´t care if someone comes up and says: the bmw is faster here and here ....
Even if it is faster I am proud of riding a beauty, not a "cyclops".

Just my two cents.

+ 1 I am buying mine because it is a Ducati and I dont need the fastest bike around to make me happy.

It is a bit disappointing that the S1000RR is still quicker, won't see the MCN until Sunday - is the difference huge?

Having said that performance is just one (albeit big) area I look at when getting a new bike. Styling, comfort, noise, technology etc all play a part too and the Panigale wins comfortably on all those points for me.

Its not just the power of the BM, i think the 1199 will run it close anyway but they say that the BM is more composed in the corners, to me this is a bigger concern!

I don't care who's machine is fastest as in 12 months time there will be a few out there pushing the barriers further. For me the look of the bike was a huge factor in choice and even to this day is the main reason behind the purchase. Delivery has slipped back but that has also fallen in line with some issues I have had with work so all in all I am not getting too stressed just more excited. I doubt that I will ride this bike to within an inch of its life very much like 99% of owners. It is different and it has lots of "gadgets/technology" that appeals to me hence the reason for purchase.

I have the same issue...I own a 2010 s1000rr... I love the bike, it's going to break my heart departing with it...shame I cant afford both. it's never put a foot wrong but the appeal of the 1199s has not been lost, my perfect situation would be S1KR as my track bike and the 1199 as sunday blast bike!!!

We need more road reviews...biking is about how it makes you feel and until I ride it myself I cant comment on this....desperately waiting on my mate's tricolore being delivered...My 1199s ABS isnt due to Sept and his in May/June. I may change my mind after a shot of his but I had to get my name down just in case I love it. Its just a waiting game for now!!!

Scott, in the real world ultimate performance is irrelevant. According to a bike mag in the UK a few years ago, people generally do not use much more than 50 or so bhp on the road anyway.

I know several riders who can outride me on Triumph Bonnevilles or similar on the road just by sheer bravado. As a track day vet of over 100 track days, shifting between the fast and intermediate groups, I am also used to having people go passed me on "substandard" machines. Some smaller twisty tracks such as the Brands Hatch Indi circuits suit smaller machines that can corner faster whilst others such as Silverstone GP suit the litre bikes. Almeria in Spain is a mix of technical over speed, and the playing field is more level, however, a person weighing 125lbs on a 600 will out drag my 226lbs on a 1000 coming out of a turn.

When buying a bike for the real world it should be a blend of form over function. In that respect the BMW is (IMHO) fugly compared to the beauty of the Panigale. Some BMW riders will ride passed me and others will not, do I care? No.

The last bit of your sentence concerns me.

As many others have stated, I am buying the bike for more than just straight out performance (looks, character, new technology, etc.), BUT I need to have it handle well without major suspension upgrades.

As a previous owner of the 1x98 series, that was something I really did not get over - the slow turning characteristics and parts purchased to "get it sorted" (Ducshop link, triple stem, labor for install), were one of the few negatives of ownership. I really hope that future reviews versus the literbike competition show that the 1199 does not suffer from these flaws (i.e. handling).

It would be a deal breaker for me since I race and do quite a few trackdays.

MCN clearly state that the Panigale would have taken the crown if the comparison was against the old S1000RR

The report claims the S1 is also more comfortable and composed on the road.

One other point to note is comments again being raised about the instability of the Panigale on the track, this is becoming a common point in the early reviews, also a bit stiff and nervous over bumpy roads!!!

The main comments are about the looks and how it turns heads wherever it goes, nice for the poseurs!

Having also ordered a Tricolore i would hope the supsension issues raised in these early reviews in negated by the Ohlins systems. Interesting comments though.

The Tricolores will have the same suspension as it the "s" thats being reviewed.
