How old?

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I think I have owned nearly 30 bikes in 8 years . Pretty stupid really .

Whenever I reread Song of the Sausage Creature, I just have to wonder - how would he have felt on an 1198SP? Or the 1299 for that matter??

I just read it! :) Thanks ! I never read that before.. He certainly had a good style of writing and he really was out there! I read a lot of his stuff back in the 70's If he thought the Supersoprt 900 was fast he would have literally .... his pants if he rode a new Panigale  LOL>.

He was a great writer and had such an unusual gonzo style. He was truly unique and his writing style seemed to be fueled by massive amounts of acid and other chemicals along with the wild imaginings of a truly wild spirit that could not be held down or tamed by society.. He was amazing and led a full and WILD life..!. In some ways I really admire him and in others I pity him.
To bad he shot himself  I always figured he would have gone out in a more flamboyant way..:(

everyone here is too embarrassed to say they rode a gigster in the past! Haha jk

I failed to mention my two gsxrs that I started with lol! I also don't go on subaru forums and let them know I use to drive my grandma's Buick lesabre for a while (even though that car was like driving a lazy boy recliner!)lol

My first "motorcycle" was a Sachs Saxonette: Top speed was 31km/h.
I drove from Zurich to London in only 3 days, that was in 1981 :)

my first 2 bikes... sadly... we suzuki gsxrs, a 600 then 1000... I thought it was the cool bike back then, nothing more then a bike to beat on and think i was badda$$

I then got a Yamaha R1 and realized what I was missing out on with a real bike, and when I got the panigale after that wow, no comparison :D

I just turned 32. Honda 50cc was my first bike (got it for my 5th BDay). Moved to a 125 at around 10. Next came an R6, then a gsxr1000. Back to a cbr600rr, then a 1000rr. Quick stint with an Aprilia Shiver and a BMW K1200r.

Can't see myself falling out of love with the Ducs any time soon.

I always used to drool over the Ducs, but would tell myself "why would I pay that much more for a bike that isn't really any faster?" At least that's what I said to justify pockets that weren't deep enough at the time.

I let my friend last night who rides dirt bikes and used to own a gsxr 1000 ride my panigale and when he came back he was asking me why is the throttle response so late? He thinks gixxer 1ks are faster haha

Was born and raised in Worb, CH! My first "Töffli" was a 3 speed Puch with rubber grommets for suspension.

Good for you. Wish I could have started my motorcycle addiction at that early age.

I still had my first bikes up till recently . My dad restored them for me maybe some other members might have had something similar .

Just curious what the demographic for these bikes? Are you older guys who can finally afford one or guys in your 20's and 30's? I'm fairly young and wasn't sure if thats typical for these kind of bikes or not. I've also never seen another guy on a 1299 In my hometown of Columbus, Ohio yet!

I'm 46... Been on the Pani for a year. First sport bike was a Hayabusa (being tall, I don't fit on the GXR or R6 very well- all knees and elbows). My daily rider is a BMW GSA-but it just doesn't have the go-go I like to have from time to time. The Busa is a lot of bang for the buck, much like the GXR, and I liked the Busa but when I took the 1199s for a spin and I was sold. Can't say it the most practical purchase I've made- it is an expensive toy. I can imagine a younger person might have to stretch to make this purchase because you still need a car and a life. Also, it's not just the sticker price- TCO (insurance, maintenance, tires) adds up pretty quick.

Ride it mostly on the track and to work on nice days- so like I said, not the most practical purchase. It's also not a bike you want to just leave out in the weather.

I'm right there with you. I'm 6'5" and weigh 225lbs. MY other bike is a 2013 ZX14r with full titanium Brocks exhaust and the ECU flashed by Don Guhl etc.. it is my "cruiser" and the bike my wife rides on with me. Needless to say it is pretty fast and my wife loves to go fast with me. She is a great wife .. I tell her that I married her because she is a "Sport model" LOL..

When you are tall you just have to adjust. My track bike was a 2011 ZX10R *see my avatar.. So I guess I am used to riding a bike that is too small for my frame.. I am sure I look like a monkey humping a football on all of them but I don't care LOL.
My Ducati 1299S fits me fine but you are right. It doesn't make as good a street bike mainly because it doesn't like to just lope around in slow traffic. It is like a highly strung race horse that is just biting at the bit and wants to run!!
At slower street speeds it just lopes and jumps wanting to be revved.. The faster you ride it the better it becomes. ** Since I have a 36" inseam and long arms I went with the taller comfort seat and bought some adjustable pegs (that allow me to raise the pegs and move them about another inch rearward) so I fit pretty well and I can tuck in easier at the track. ** I also added the tall race windshield and it is about perfect for me.. Of course after about an hour of riding I have to take a break and let my legs stretch out but that is pretty much with any sport bike.
It's still WAAAY better than riding some big slow vibrator like a Harley LOL

Oh well, That is the price we pay to play when we have the privilege of owning a true Italian racebike with lights.. The 1299 doesn't compromise for you. YOU have to compromise for it!

I love the Suzuki RM 125.. I used to race one back in the day. Great bikes but they tended to seize pistons unless you ran them rich.. I also had an RM 250.. and a Yamaha YZ490.. The 490 was a wicked wicked bike ! Lots of power (but it did not like to corner well like the 250's) You just had to more or less point and shoot. IT was fast though. I ended up crushing my entire sternum and collapsing my right lung on that thing. I hurt to this day (31 years later) because of it but if I could go back and be 29 again I would do it all over again! It was so much fun back then..:D

Turned 61 in June, worked all summer for .75 cents an hour for my first bike in 1966, 350 Triumph Speed Twin, been on bikes my whole life since then, raced dirt, pavement, canyons, as well as commute, all kinds of bikes, British, European, Domestic, and Jap, decided I needed a Ducati Super Bike before I croaked since I never had one before, bought my 1199 a couple of years ago, and it's been a blast, it gets along well with my red V11 Sport.
