How To: Charcoal Canister Removal

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I do have the issue with the hard start as well, but I thought that it was because of the battery being cold.

I might do this mod but, what does the charcoal canister actually do ?

The charcoal canister is an emissions piece and can be the source of hard starting (do a search for more info--lots written about it).

Most dealers won't remove it, so if you want to do it you'll have to do it yourself. Not many mods are easier than this, so long as you know which line to cap and which to vent.

1) Remove your upper and lower right side fairings, which will expose the canister.

2) Undo the rubber strap holding the canister to the bike, then remove the top two hoses (cutting off with scissors works if you don't plan on ever installing it again).

As in the picture, one of the lines leads from the gas tank to the canister and the other leads from the canister back up into the intake:

3) The line from the tank (which has a larger inside diameter than the vacuum line in case you cut both lines and now can't figure out which was which) needs to be extended using about another 12" of hose and a hose barb and routed to a safe place (read: far away from your headers/exhaust!). I removed the hose from the bottom of the canister and used this to extend the fuel vent line, which was conveniently just the right length. Route it wherever it's safe to route it, as gas/gas vapors will be escaping from this line. Make sure it's not blocked, kinked, smashed, or plugged with the bodywork back on.

4) Plug the vacuum line (which has a smaller inside diameter than the vent line). You can cap it with a hose cap, fold it and zip tie it tightly, or shove an M4 screw into it and zip tie it (which is what I did).

5) Remove the charcoal canister bracket by unscrewing the three screws marked in the pic below.

Finished (plugged line is hidden):

While you're at it, make sure the other fuel vent line (the one in the far right, closest to the front wheel, running vertically down) is not pinched or kinked when you put the bodywork back on. During my last service they pinched the line and I didn't discover it until I did this mod.

Looking at the diagram, the two outlets from the tank seem to come from the same place.

1. Can anyone confirm whether they have different internal sources inside the tank?
Do the two outlets serve a different purpose?

2. If not, what would be the down side of shutting the outlet, that originally went to the charcoal canister, directly at the tank? Without a tube going anywhere.

Excellent info. Question: My dealer re-mapped some FI setting on my bike (don't remember what it was exactly, but suspicious) as a workaround for not removing the canister. Works 90% of the time, until I need to start my bike at 219F out in the desert @ 2000' @ 100F air temp. Will removing the canister conflict with the FI changes? I know I'm not providing much useful info but oh well. I'll call the dealer tomorrow and reconfirm what they changed as it seems to be a common thing and reply back then.

Nope. Removing will have no negative side effects.

I was just doing this mod and found that my fuel lines run differently and my 1199s doesn't have the square electrical box immediately above the charcoal canister. What is that unit? ABS maybe?

ABS, yup.

While troubleshooting a high idle issue I checked my lines tonight. Whichever dealer last pulled my tank disconnected both fuel vent lines and didn't bother to reconnect (hose clamps are gone, too). If that kind of explosive fire hazard wasn't enough, they also pinched the airbox/tank seal, meaning it wasn't sealing in a corner. Grrrr.

Thanks Denis. Sorry to hear of your dealer problems. I always take off my plastics and notice little things that aren't right on my bike everytime I return from the dealer. I lost count how many screws and grommets that they don't properly install. I love it when people rave about the work they do for them on "this" forum. But hey, they must be worth the $80+ an hour though...

Did the removal of the Charcoal Canister yesterday. It had fuel in it already with just 700 miles on the clock so far.

Thanks for the writeup!

Would removing this be a reason for Ducati to deny a warranty claim though? Just a thought.Im going to remove mine carefully so I can reverse the process if necessary.

No. Some dealers actually do this for customers. One of my local dealer mentioned it to me and I said don't worry about it. It doesn't fix anything by removing it anyway so no need.

I've had my bike not want to start up while I've been low on gas but the bike was over 200 degrees. I never overfill anyway. Since I experience some of the hard start symptoms regardless, I'm not convinced this is a fix of any sort. My bike hasn't stalled since my first service (2200 miles on the clock now) but had stalled quite a few times prior to that.

i did this mod but didnt extend that vent hose. should i extend it by using the bottom hose?
