Marquez said he would rather crash out of the front than fight for 10th. The Honda is ...., he was at the limit the whole time so regardless of the detractors who want to see him fail, he is still an incredible rider. Basically they had 5 minutes to set up the Kalex, look at Mir and Rins the other Crash Bandicoots on the same bike, nowhere! Put MM on a KTM or GP 23 and he would be gone

Agreed. First race back, on perhaps the least consistent bike on the grid, and he’s 6 hundredths of a second off the pole time of the current world champ on the current best bike.

Impressive.

Which is why he doesn't give a .... about taking anyone out with him.....

They all ride on the limit you know, there's no cruising in MotoGP, and if's but's and maybe's don't count, only points and finishes, so there is that.

As for riding the Honda, he makes 15 million euro a year for riding that bike, and just like Fabio, who whines and throws his little tantrums (reminds me of Vinales actually....) he chose to stay, they both chose the package they're on.

his fans seem to think he's the same dominant rider he was when he was winning everything, he's not, sure you don't forget how to ride but the bike has moved on without his input, his reflexes are slower, (no more front end saves these days) and there seems to be at least _some_ consideration for self preservation that was never there as a much younger rider. There's also the small issue of Diplopia, does he still suffer from it a little? even if his vision is back to 100% the constant niggle that another decent head knock could cause it to return permanently must surely be in the back of his mind now, he's still only 30 so he has a long life in front of him after racing.

I think his motivation to keep going is to beat Rossi's records, which frankly, isn't going to happen, just as it caught up with Rossi, father time and changes to the bike, the tyre etc have caught up to Marc and he's fighting a losing battle.... at least he has that 15 mil to enjoy.

To say it’s his first race back is a little dismissive of all the training and recovery work he was very likely doing in the background away from the cameras. I’m sure he’s in near constant contact with the team and regularly has practice sessions.

What makes an exceptional champion like MM?, I've been around people like him and they are made of different material to you and me. They are next level, and while the money is good its not the motivator, he wants to win and he has the skills. People like him are totally driven, he will retire when he stops winning- he is not going to do a Rossi and end up as grid filler. We are privileged to watch one of the greatest GP racers in action.

Pfft, he's a cock.

And he will never be as good, or as revered as Rossi. It takes more than stats to be the GOAT, it takes class, MM has none.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion,

He hasn’t been in serious title contention since the big arm injury a few years ago.

A race, in which, he went off track, re-entered in 16th place, and made it back to 3rd before crashing.

16th to 3rd, in half a race.

In a sport where riders are routinely striving for tenths of a second per lap advantage, it’s almost unfathomable. Is there another similar performance in the modern era? I can’t remember one.

I think Rossi did something similar a few of times. He won from way in the back and did it without knocking riders out of the way like a bull as did 93. I remember this race you're talking about. It was quite a ride and 93 also has done similar feats more than once, though not as elegantly. He's good, hard to say he isn't good.

Here's one, from 11th to win. I think there's a more recent one as well. I remember he had to start at the back from penalty or something and won. I haven't found it yet.

2006 German GP, MotoGP™ - Upsetting the odds from 11th on the grid

15th to 2nd

Valentino Rossi - Wikipedia

"Rossi bounced back by taking pole position and winning the following race in Catalunya, despite making a poor start that dropped him to 15th place at the end of the first lap. [54] He scored a second place after narrowly losing out on the race victory with Biaggi at the Dutch round. He followed this up with another win: this time the British GP."

This was pretty standard GOAT stuff. Bad qualifying, wins from sub-optimal position.

I’m lukewarm on Rossi generally, but obviously he’s great. I still consider Marquez a tick behind Rossi and Stoner who each won championships with different manufacturers.
