Riding north on Monmouth road in Oakhurst NJ on this beautiful 75 degree and sunny day when I come up to a red light and go oh ....!
(I'm a downshifter. I don't hit the breaks until I'm at 12-13mph...)
I'm downshifting and nothing is happening, in-oh. So I hit the brakes and pull over to the side of the road. I look down and guess what? There's no ....... shift there any longer. Great! Bike was JUST in for a $120.00 an hour service a couple hundred miles before this ..... Dealer installed the DP Rearsets and obviously something ain't right here!!!!! Bike/shifter was running absolutely fine moments before I noticed my lack of shifter. I was going between 30-40 and was in third for about a half mile before coming up to this light. Called Ducati assistance- 4+ hour wait for a tow .... THAT ....! Walked it across the street and parked it in the police departments parking lot for the night. ....... dealership can pick it up and replace the $1,000 pieces of metal. Beyond ....... furious. Plans for my weekend ride to PA this week are now shot to .....

So more a dealer failure than a bike failure???

Agreed. They either didn't tighten them down correctly, forgot the Loctite, etc. from the sounds of it (unless the shifter was defective somehow).

Sorry to hear. $120 per hour labor rate? Yikes. Melillimoto in Ocala FL charges $85 and Ducati Daytona charges $91. I was ticked about $6 more...

Good luck with your fixes. Many more days of summer to ride and they will be epic I'm sure.

I'm not going to make any crass conclusions so I don't know. I'm still working on lowering my blood pressure and holding back just completely losing it! Miserable week all around and I thought this ride would help clear my head. OBVIOUSLY NOT! The only time any of us should see our bikes taking an overnight trip at the local PD is if its impounded.

But yes, it appears there was some sort of tightening/thread/loctite issue.

Yup this is true...but the impound red model is more prone to this, ask me how I know.

I mean I could understand this happening if I "rode" the bike. This bike scares the .... out of me. 6-grand is about all it sees. I keep it in a high gear whenever cruising around town, don't on it, etc etc. yet again a completely unacceptable failure.

Honestly dude, lol, the dealer just didn't install your rearsets properly. Has nothing to do with the type of bike.

HAHAH that's my list of .... for the classified ad for when I list it up for sale lol. Wasn't saying, wait nvmd, I get what you're saying.

Obviously they screwed up. Lets see how big of a fight they try when they can foot the $1,000 rearset cost AND labor. they will not see a cent from me.

Frosty- did you ever read the story about the gross-overcharge for these to be installed? Well, it was a few months and many forum posts ago (it actually may've been on ducati.ms IDR) but for the rearsets, a fender eliminator, and a 5 minute lever install it totaled right around $600. (when I was quoted Like $250) that was a big no-no they did to me. SO its funny (not really) them overcharging me months ago was resolved but they ended up overcharging me for DEFECTIVE ....... work! God strike me dead I should've never gotten involved with this whole scene. At 17 I bought a $4,000 Honda Shadow 750 rode 15,000 miles in 3 years. Got 55MPG, did oil changes myself to the tune of $21.00 after tax. Gods really kicking my ... this week. I must've done something wrong.

$600 for rearsets, fender eliminator and lever install?? I just got my integrated taillights and fender eliminator installed a few hours ago for $160. Levers were all of maybe 10 mins tops? So that's basically like $400+ for rearset install LOL @ that!

First off, very sorry to hear this.

It sounds like the dealer did not either apply Loctite or did not allow enough time for the loctite to set. I had the experience of riding down to Leguna Seca and one of the bolts came loose and locked against the quick shifter which caused the bike to lock in 4th gear - solid.

BTW nice White 1199.

Yeah with the DP rearsets theres some big black piece that's still there, you can see the shifter mount rests there- I tried moving it with my hand and it appears to be locked in 3rd. ended up having to walk up the road with my beautiful bike looking like a complete ..... to my whole town who just so happen to all be traveling this road at this time. I walked the whole area trying to find the shifting and nothin'

See my signature for how I feel about DP by Ducati.

I've read it many times but never completely got what you meant until just now. Yeah I know. $1,000 a pound for metal, sickening. I'm young, naïve so I never really even thought about another brand/dealership to install. Well now I go another ride free weekend :-(

Major stuff/maintenance - Dealer for warranty purposes.
Cosmetic aftermarket parts - A reputable shop.

Usually, stealerships around Los Angeles charge about $120hr for labor and almost ALWAYS quote a longer time than necessary to finish a job. Other shops are between $80-$90 but the main difference is the quoted time which in turn means less money out of pocket. They're not nicknamed stealership for nothing.

I suppose you are joking?
