I started a thread on oil grade. Once you pick your oil how often do you change it for normal riding. The manual says 600 miles then 7500 then 15k. Is this right? the more reading I do on oil the more confused i get. should i use rotella and change it more frequent or use something else like motul and change it less frequent. price would even out then but wouldnt cleaner oil be better?:eek::eek:

My drain plug had a lot of filings after my first 1k miles, which is normal for break in. Follow the manual unless you are on the track semi-frequently, then its really up to you. You'll get a zillion suggestions, from each race to annual. None of the oils people are using should be any more of a lasting issue than their peers. I think oil level is probably a important as frequency.

Every fall before storage.....I ride about 7k km a year and think it's a good idea to put her away with new oil

Thats a good tip my friend. Everyone should take heed. If your bikes laid up for a few months over winter any solids in the oil will fall out of suspension and settle in the bottom of the sump, not recommended. Do an oil change just before you put bike away for the dark season.

+1 to that. Keeping oil level correct is the best advice and practice we should all follow. Regarding oil change frequency, well i"d say stick to the guide in the owners handbook, oil is so high tech these days it can easily cope with the demands of the average joe and the bikes needs. The days of changing oil every 1000 miles should be consigned to the history books,I know guys who would change their oil 6 or 8 times a year, really OTT. If you dont actually cover many miles then change oil every 12 months regardless,as good as the oil is,it still degrades over time.;)

what determines change frequency isn't mileage or time, should really be the quality of oil. Check your oil, if you it's thick and dark after 1000 miles, change it, if it's still crystal clear after 5000 miles, woohoo, no need to drop another $50. The bike and riding style has a lot to do with it.
