Panigale R vs. Desmosedici

I have had both bikes and now have neither of them both have been sold . I regret selling the Desmosedici and hope to buy another one some day .

Yep, sometimes there is just something about a particular car or bike that "speaks to you". It's not logical. It's emotional, and when that connection is made, it sucks to remember how things "were". I feel the same way about my '93 CBR 900RR. It was black and red, and my then girlfriend (now my wife of 19 years) was on the back when we got pulled over by a cop on Dunsmuir in downtown Vancouver for pulling a wheelie for half a block. Man I loved that bike.................. It was stolen outside her apartment on Davie St. not long after. Never seen again. :(

The Demso is a bike to OWN the R is a bike to RIDE (on the track, preferably). Putting many miles on a Desmo at this point out of warranty is going to be very expensive. But there is not a better-sounding bike on the planet, and if you show up at bike night with one you're the coolest guy there.

Awesome post jarelj!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have boiled it down, distilled it, and it's been served. Excellent.

I own the R and have never owned or ridden the Desmo.
A friend of mine owns one and he would agree with jarelj's comment while another friend was close to buying one and changed his mind after doing some in depth research.
He decided to customize his R instead.

exactly.

This topic was discussed before few years ago.

I have the Desmo toy on my desk and as much I LOVE the bike, that is far as I can go.

Again, if money was no object, I'll get 2.

This was a great day when we took out these three and swapped around being able to sample 40 years differences between Ducati superbikes .
The Desmosedici will be a very collectable future bike even if it's expensive to maintain .

Awesome photo!

Wilkson, do you still have the Desmo?

Okay, so I own a 2015 R and in no way apologise for my bias as I adore it.

Sadly I've never had the priviledge of riding the Desmo, but I've seen and heard one myself, although side lined as it was too loud for track!, and I have to agree with what's been said here already, it truly is something else, it really is a little bit special, no denying it, hands down beats the R. I have to say this because the Panigale has the charisma of an iPhone, but that is down to Mr Ducati's marketing. 1199, 1199s, 1199r then 1299, 1299s, blah, blah, blah iPhone 5, 6, 6s, 6Plus.......... you see what I'm getting at. The Superleggera was special, but never as unique as the Desmo.

However, I as for the machines themselves, again the Desmo has some incredible engineering under it, but so does the R. A V-twin revving to 12,500 is just magic, it's intoxicating, you have a fistful roaring up to 10,000 rpm and the speed it revs up, thinking this is great as it boots you up the backside and gives you more, incredible!!! The R is much prettier in my eyes too, I sometimes find myself just looking at it for quite a while. I've always loved the Panigale in this respect, the lines, single sided swing arm, low slung exhaust etc. just the noise too. But it did take two previous incarnations of Panigale ('12 1199s and '14 1199r) to get me to this particular model that I'm finally happy with.......

Well, if I'm truly honest, I have the set up with mechanical suspension etc. but the engine is too much for me. But, you don't have to floor this bike everywhere to enjoy it, just how it behaves and the noise is just sublime. Small commuting miles are no biggie either if that's what you plan, gearing for high end power actually makes this a kitten and very managable round town in low rpm with no issue.

So for me, the R, all day every day to ride, to use, to enjoy. The Desmo would be a nice to have, a second bike, a wall piece, a f*cking big WOW in your garage.

It's nice to have choices....... *cough* Superleggera, did I say that?

That is another factor I am definitely considering. Good post.

Great post Mutt1979. I've been going back and forth on this in my mind for a few weeks. I think ultimately the decision will be made by my financier. If Courtney gives me the green light on the Desmo, I just feel like I have to take a shot at it. It could very well be the stupidest purchase I have ever made from a financial standpoint, but "no guts, no glory." I think sometimes you just have to put logic aside. The R is the logical choice. It is undoubtedly the superior motorcycle in terms of sheer performance. And it's pretty good looking too ;) But, given the short riding season where I live in Canada, the fact that I live 5 blocks away from work, and the fact that the roads where I live absolutely suck ..., the next bike I buy will serve the same function as my Viper. Super cool to look at in the garage, and drive around town, with the occasional trip to the West Coast to really put some heat into the tires. If she gives me the thumbs down, I think I'll just keep saving my pennies until next Spring and see where I'm at then, and what is out on the market. At the end of the day, there will be Panigale Rs for sale, and they might be a little cheaper by a couple grand. The Desmo? I'm not sure it will still be available.................unlikely.

Buy it, put it somewhere in your house that you see it everyday.

It'll send a tingle up and down your spine just looking at it.

How many things do that on a daily basis every time you see it.

I'm not in the wealth bracket to afford to do this, but I did it with my 1098S when it was resting from track duty.

You absolutely have the right idea ChrisE. In fact, I've considered that for winter, if I actually get the bike. There's just one problem: I'm not sure how the wife will feel about me parking my motorcycle in the living room :( Actually, I am absolutely certain how she will feel about that. If it gets done, it will be a total Mission Impossible project, with the bike making its way into the house when she is at work or out shopping etc........ Once it's in, I might be successful in keeping it there, but it's gonna be a huge battle. I have to consider whether the price I'll pay is worth it...........

Edit - Actually, come to think of it, I'll come up with some ........ story about how the bike absolutely cannot be in an environment below 0C. Our garage, while insulated, does get down to -5C to -10C when the outside temp is -30C and below. Hmmmm....... I'll have to work on my "deadpan, as a matter of fact" delivery so she doesn't catch on. Ahhhhhh the scheming has already started............Awesome.

Since you are a lawyer throw in a bit of Latin. That might pull your wagon through... :p
