I liked the very old Formula USA rules, where you could show up with a bike and as long as it had two wheels it was legal. There were some wild bikes built in that series. Turbo bikes included based on the CBR900 RR and two strokers going at it. Lots of other variations too.
Super cool.
Well, motorsport racing is effectively a big marketing campaign for the manufacturers. It all starts with what bikes are in demand on the retail market, and then race classes and rules are backed out from there. So these so-called, "Middle-weight" bikes are popular right now (V2, Triumph 765, MV Agusta 800, etc.), or are at least more popular than 600s (dead), so the racing leagues are trying to find a way to fit these bikes in to racing categories. The are too big & fast for the traditional supersport / 600 classes, but of course too small & underpowered for the liter bike or open classes. So what MotoAmerica has done, following World Supersport, is to "dumb down" these middleweight bikes, using a special electronics package, to make them competitive with traditional 600 class bikes.
