Looking for advice from expert racers or fast trackday riders.

Let’s get this into context

Have a 22 v4 base

The bike rides beautifully, best bike I have riden, by far, coming from a 19 V4S

Front forks are amazing, rear shock feels ok, at least to me. (Some people have told me the rear wheel is jumping up and down on track) but I really don’t feel nothing.

The question is, should I order a rear shock?

What benefit does it give?

Better traction? Helps to not lift rear wheel under braking? Better over bumps? Better tire wear?

I am a fast pace trackday rider, but not an expert by far.

Hope you guys can give me some advice

Don’t want to mess things up

Have you set the preload? The problem comes in that if you need to change the spring, there are none on the aftermarket for the V4 Sachs shock. I think @RickD996 rode his with the Sachs shock. I vaguely remember him talking about doing suspension on that bike, hopefully he can drop a line here.

The main benefit, I found, was in 'feel'. The rear is more positive, it gives a better connection between you, the bike, and the track. The bike will deal with bumps better, and have more traction. Other than the cost, there is no downside.

Also, you can adjust the shock length. This is really handy, and will allow you to dial in the bike to your preference.

Thanks Rick

That was more less what I thought, that will be my next mod.

Yes, forgot the OEM is not height adjustable

I road one season on stock suspension and felt good. Now I have TTX and 214 on front and feels lot better

Yes, that is exactly what is on my mind

In stock suspension I feel great right now,

So I was thinking if it was necesary or not, and scared of messing things up.

But your post just helps me out on the decision

About he forks, how do you choose between 214 or the other option? Is it a weight thing

The stock Showa forks are excellent. The only advantage of going to a cartridge kit, is, it's easier to swap the springs over. I preferred the Showa to the Ohlins in my V4R, and was within four seconds of BSB superbike times at Brands Hatch GP circuit, with the Showa.

Any particular reason? Seems like suspension is more voodoo than science. Meaning that a lot of it is placebo effect.

For me just knowing that I have Ohlins underneath me at the track with electronic nannies adjusting damping gives me more confidence. _I_ seem to be the one that causes the problems, not the bike.

Really need to get this bike sprung correctly for my weight… everyone other bike I’ve had I’ve just road bog stock and rode around the inherent problems and niggles.

Well confidence in feel, is totally different to confidence in a brand

In feel, they don’t jump, they suck up bumps, the bike feels with more grip on front, turns more (this last one maybe geometry)

I Can tell you, that my stock oem 19 V4S OHLINS forks, were a piece of crap, compared to the OEM showa forks on the base 22 bike

u mean why I went not with cartridges just complete legs? I don’t really know probably just for looks. I told Kyle racing to put 11.0 springs on rear shock and forks because my weight with all gear in 240lb

Thanks man

Sorry, just realized they are complete forks

Yes, I would also go with complete legs, do they fit with stock triple clamp? Or do you have to change something?

I’d argue that this is the same. It’s all personal preference and mental.

My 22 V4S Ohlins DES shod bike is worlds better than any suspension I’ve ever ridden. I think Ducati has made leaps in this area. Though I probably ride it at 4/10ths of it’s capability so far.

RickD996, when I remember correctly you where very happy with the track settings in the manual for the Showa. What rideheight did you set on the rearshock or was is also still the original when you set that laptime?
I don't feel the need to change the forks but in the rear I use the TTX GP shock.

Hey Rikkie, yeah, with the Showa I ran the damper settings from the manual, and ran the stock air gap. I did change the springs, but you would need to run springs suitable for your riding style and also the circuit.
I swapped out the Showa shock pretty quickly, it's not very good. I think I ended up at 307mm shock length, but I'm not sure if you can get that measurement on an off the shelf Ohlins. And, shock length is somewhat irrelevant, due to the eccentric hub, you need a ride height measurement.
I just did a little Youtube on measurements, and it shows where I measure the ride height. You may be able to get there, depending on your gearing and position of the hub!
Equally, you may think my settings are a bag of .... 🤷‍♂️

What is the height of stock shock, rick?
