A New Panigale Track Bike Build

It is a pretty fast track and fairly abrasive, but it has a couple of flat out weird corners. Turn 2 is a 3rd gear 75 mph left hander that literally never seems to end. I love it, but it puts a huge load on the left side of the tire. Secondly, it is always a freaking FURNACE up there; I don't remember the last time I rode there and the temperature was less than 105 Fahrenheit in the shade (and there's no freaking shade) and it's quite often 110 degrees. The track temperatures routinely hit 150 Fahrenheit, so tires take a massive beating.

I also run the SC1 in front and the SC2 in rear. My starting pressures are usually set by the tire specialist, but he tells me he usually runs me at 29 psi cold rear to start and 31 psi cold up front, with the goal of being around 34-35 psi hot for both tires.

Have you tried the Prelli SC2.5 yet? My Pirelli rep tells me it's guaranteed to NOT get destroyed like the SC2.

Cheers.

Brother, you are faster than me, and I am doing 90+ into T2. I know you are doing more than that!

I'm not a scientist but I'm pretty sure 90 is faster than 75mph.

Hmm, I keep rereading mine to and it still makes sense to me

I was saying that he has to be doing more than 75 at turn 2, because I have seen the times he turns at T-hill, and they are 5 seconds quicker than mine but I am doing at least 90 in that turn.

Those pressures seem very high to me. I am running 31.5 front and 26 rear hot of the track on SC1's. That is recommendations from 3 Pirelli vendors and an ex BSB mechanic. I have even ran lower with decent results.

I do a ton of riding WSIR big track which is really hard on tires and can get 1.5 days of practice out of a rear and about 6 6 lap races. I used to run the sc2 on the rear but really don't see a difference in wear that is worth giving up grip for. The sc1 is super sticky and I highly recommend trying it.

I use to run my fronts at around 32 until a weekend with Dave Moss he recommends 38 PSi . I don't run mine that high but usually around 35 psi hot.
The Pirellis have a soft side wall it retains there shape better .You will risk collapsing the side wall running them lower .

4 Words: Pirelli Diabo Superbike Slicks. First time out on them today, I went faster than I had all year on the Bridgestone V02's which I consider to be a stellar tire. I had huge confidence in corner entry straight away on the Pirellis and the drive grip was astounding. 200/60 SC2 rear, 120/70 SC1 front. Back at the track tomorrow for some additional testing with them, so far I'm very impressed!

We managed to get our hands on a few SCX's, phenomenal for trackdays! Same grip as SC2 with twice the longevity and no shredding.

Use this as a guide .

As a rule use the SC 0 on hot days the SC 2 on cooler days and the SC 1 if you like the feel of them . This is for the rear they have different side walls so all will give a different feel .
I rarely use a SC 2 on the front you will need to push hard to keep a decent temp in them and have low sided due to this with very little feel .
Everyone has personal preference to what works for them I have raced solely on these tyres over the last three years .
This is just what has worked for me but everyone has different experiences .

I am talking about the speed in the corner.. Coming into the corner, yes it's at about 90-100 but we are carrying around 75-80mph on average through the corner.

Turn two is one of my favorite corners anywhere on any track; it's just so much fun to rail around it with your knee planted for about 20 seconds .. Then try one of 10 lines that you can use through it. The number of passes I have made on the outside.. I always giggle like a 7 year old when I go around someone the long way round.. As they say, little things please little minds..:D

Bear in mind we have sky high track temps.. The Pirelli specialists at each track give us the target temps for the tire, as well as the target pressures and that's what they tell us to run. I have tried other settings, but it has not worked as well usually.

The good news is that I have a Keigwins 2 day trackday coming up at Thunderhill and it has the potential to only be 90 degrees! It will be my first venture onto the racetrack on my 1299 and I am ridiculously pumped up to see how the two of us gel together.

Like I said, I already have the tire vendor set up and he has a couple of "Philip Island" Pirelli SC 2.5 rears for me and a couple of standard SC1's for the front.

I'm going to take it relatively conservatively and get to know the bike at the track and get a feel for the rear, since it has the potential to react a bit differently from the SC2 that I'm so used to, so no heroics this weekend, just as many fast, but controlled laps as I can put in, while learning everything I can about the differences between my 1299 and my BMW S1000RR and how I need to ride the 1299, vs. the BMW.

I hope I go as well as I think I will on the 1299; but I doubt I will be setting any personal bests on this weekend.

Another exciting development, is that my Wife will be using the Pirelli Superbike slicks on her Triumph Daytona 675R for the first time.. I'm more excited for HER than I am for myself. I'm hoping she takes a couple of seconds off her personal best..

Cheers and thanks for all the input and great information. You track hounds on this Forum are a great resource for those of us new to Ducati.

I think the SCX and the SC2.5 might be the exact same tire, it's just being called the SC2.5 by my distributor and track vendor.

The description you are giving, plus the press release and the fact that it seems to be a Philip Island special, leads me to believe it is.

Cheers and thanks for the heads up.

Try the SC 0's on a warm day they are sensational . I have been using the Superbike Slick for some time now as our series is sponsored be Pirelli and cannot fault them .
What pressure have you been using ? I generally run the same set up you currently have fitted .

26 psi rear, 34 psi front hot off the warmers after 45 minutes on high. The front looks like new after 2 days, the rear has some scrub through the shoulder, but not bad, I think it has another 2 days in it. If they grip like this and I can get 4 days out of a rear, I'm going to be extremely happy. By Day #2 I had dropped 2 full seconds off my fastest times from earlier this year. I was also just riding a little faster, got a great tip on body position from Jake Zemke a few weeks ago and put it to good use.

Me too. Saturday and Sunday, A group. My Wife will be in the B+ group. Forum member MMC will also be there on his 2015 "R"

Stop by and say hi; I'll be the one with the slightly loud 1299.. :D

I am praying that the temperatures stay below 95 degrees, as it get miserable at 105+ and I end up drinking so much water, that I feel like a water balloon..

Will do! I am hard to miss, I have the big Team Slow sticker on my bike ;)

I was there 10 days ago, it wasn't too hot.

Day #2 of testing with the Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks on the x99 Panigale was a huge success! Dropped another 2 seconds from the lap times, and the bike is still easy to ride at that pace, no crazy bucking around on corner exits, nice and stable on the brakes and corner entry, it's really a pleasure to ride now. I never changed the tire pressures all weekend after setting off the warmers the first time. Rear tire wear after 2 full hard days looks pretty good, I think a little tweaking of rebound on the rear shock to compensate for the more flexible Pirelli vs. the stiffer Bridgestone that it was set up for will help with that. The front looks like it hasn't even been used yet. I have our last full weekend track day coming up at our other track in 2 weeks, I'll run this same set of tires at that event to get a feel for longevity on that rear, we'll see if it can make it for 4 full days.

wow all the change to the bike and all you needed were new tires to get faster :)

but on a serious note it's fantastic to see all the work you have put into the bike is paying off and all those little adjustments are finally all clicking into place it's just a shame the season is coming to an end but it sets you up great for next year.

Yeah, it's more than just the tires, I continued to evolve the chassis setup too, but the combination with these tires really made things work well. I'm definitely keeping this bike again for next year, I think my "winter" project this year will be to build some kind of mid-sized track bike to add to the stable. I have my Ninja 300 race bike (which needs the engine rebuilt this winter since the tranny is fried), and I have "The Beast", so now I need something in between! But what??? Ideally something that can hit 130mph or so on the straight, very light weight, with a solid road racing chassis.

Triumph 676R. Seriously. One of the best bikes out there and already comes with top flight components. Do it..:D

Nah, I've ridden 675's many times, not my kind of bike. Whatever I do will most likely be a twin or single. I raced SV650's and Ninja 650's for years, and those were a ton of fun, but I'm looking for something a little smaller and lighter than that, but larger than my Ninja 300. Sort of the "sweet spot" that no one seems to make a sport bike to fit!
