Hey all. New to the site so Duc, STW or PHL spank me as needed for a dumb thread.

I need another set of brains. About 9 years ago I suffered many slipped disks in my neck and back, nerve damage in my right arm and hip and knee damage and hadn't ridden since then until buying my Hyperstrada this February. The last 2 months I have test rode the 1199s 4 times and finally I have no additional pain after riding for an hour or more. So my most important question is I may not be able to handle a track day for the next year or so, so should I get the 1199s Matte Black that I am in love with and want to lick all over or should I get the Base Panigale? Thanks for your time and answers.

Edited for more background on me. I was always an R1 guy as that was what I could afford. Ducati has always been a dream bike for me. This will be my 2nd Ducati but first SuperBike. I will always keep this bike and want the 1st one to be the best one for me.

Do you like lightweight wheels?
1199s don't have lightweight wheels, but you can buy a pair yourself of course.
I know I wouldn't, so I chose 1199s.
Have you tried riding the Base?

No. The dealer did not have a Base demo. But I am assuming the Marzocchi Forks are comparable to the BPF's on the 899 which I rode. I don't mind stock wheels at all.

I think you nailed it in your first post - you mentioned you were in love with a particular model and wanted to do some immoral things to it. That's what you should buy, lest you have tinge of regret in "settling" for your second choice.

If you like to build a bike to your own spec, and want to get better components than what the factory offers stock, then you may want to consider the base. I bought a leftover 2012 base in early 2013 at a significant discount, and spent about $10,000 in upgrades. My parts are better than what comes from the factory on the S/Tri/R (except the motor of the R) and I spent about the same as a new S. I'm quite happy having gone that route. YMMV.

Buy a modded base used. Seen plenty of bikes with great upgrades.

Saves you a ton and leaves room for more mods.

Or get an S.

Or an R.

Or a SL. Then you don't have to worry about mods.... Wait... Umm forget it :D

Do what your heart says ;) not some idiots on the internet ... :D

Phl. Thanks my reason for asking was the fact of hearing the S model is more track ready for when i can do that. But i think the 899 forks are completely amazing on its own even though they arent electronic and wonder if they compare to the marzocchis on the base model.

Jeffd yeah. I am thinking that is my pants :) buying a bike and not my brain. I guess i should look at mods available and see the cost benefit over an s.

I always dreamed of owning any Ducati superbike. Always figured the SP and R models would be a pipe dream and I'd be stuck with ugly Japanese bikes.

So I bought the S. The Ohlins kit is pure badass. Nice wheels, LED lights. It's nice getting the 1199 the way Ducati intended it to be.

If you might try hardcore Bitubo suspension and race wheels, then get the base. Otherwise, get the S. The S has all the suspension tech I'll ever need. I'll never be as fast as many of the riders on here. And the S was on sale when I bought it.

Unless I'm missing something, the 1199's are all very similar. Not nearly as different between models as the 996/998's were. Same brakes, DTC, ABS, DQS, and engine on the S and base.

There should be killer deals on 2012,2013 1199's right now. I know there's a few dusty showroom bikes still around.

So do you regret buying the S model over the base model? And the first line describes me to a T.

Dude! get the S and you will send me a Xcard lol you will be in love

I was in your shoes went S and I love this bike. The better shocks make all the difference, and if you can outride these your going pro.

The wheels are sweet and the whole package with better lights makes all the difference.

This bike is a work of art and begs you to push it and kick your heels in for a fun ride.

Just do it, if you get a base you will second guess yourself later ;)

If your not going to beat on it and wring it out, and just want to commute or look cool or cruze, get a base :D

I literally thought this was going to take 10 pages to see a pattern but it isn't. I love the S and was bored when i rode the 899. So i guess I'll get the S model and hopefully not get too many stains on it. Do the LED lights make a difference at night? Ive never had them.

Dont assume.

There is a reason they went BPF and not marsuckies, in a year I have seen countless failures in rebound its not funny, some guys on their 3 and 4rth set.

Suspension makes or breaks the bike, why go cheap when your buying one bad azz piece of machinery.

Outhouse thx for that bit of info. The reason i was assuming was i didnt think Ducati would put inferior forks on the 1199 and great forks on the 899. Guess i was wrong. This is why i popped this thread on. They forks were my only real concern as i know the s ohlins forks are insanely good. Like i said i will keep this one forever and want the best for me on the 1st one.

I bought a Base model. I added Ohlins damper, forks, and shock for $3500. I'm happy.

Well that basically makes it the same price as an s model if you could add Led lights. And being as on the s their factory its covered under warranty. So another vote for S. Thanks Randall.

I went for the S when posed with the same conundrum.

I thought the extra bling was worth the difference, to quote a famous line, just do it!

Wife just read my og post and said lick the damn thing and get it over with

With the S you also get lighter wheels, and a carbon fiber front fender. But the valving of the S model Ohlins is different than the aftermarket. And depending on your weight, you may have to get new springs for your forks and shock.

Be honest with yourself. Do you ride hard on the street or push hard at the track? If no, save your money and get a Base. If the answer is yes, I think the S is worth the extra $5500.

I ride semi hard on the street (including my strada) and when i could do track days i rode really hard. I weigh 180lbs. is that too much for the ohlins on the s?

I weigh a bit more than you (90kgs) and I have no problem whatsoever with Ohlins.

I did change the rear linkage from F to P though to make it a little more compliant.

What do you mean by made it more compliant? I know the meaning of the word. What changed after you switched it?
