I could have put more down on my R but I decided to keep some buffer money in my bank balance to be comfortable mentally instead of stretching myself too thin.. for this limited Pani I would use a bit of my 401k money if possible to put the deposit (if I can) and use the trade in from the R to cover half the cost..

Then a 4 or 5 yr loan would kinda payout the rest so I am thinkin this through carefully..

BTW my dealer said he nominated only me which is a big deal so once I get the email, I will carefully plan out everything and then make a final decision on going ahead with the swap.. the bike may not be out till next spring (Apr-July timeframe mostly) so I can use my R till then..

Dude....it's only a bike. The novelty of an expensive exclusive bike like this will wear off long before your loan. Give it 2 years and something cooler will be out.....it's a nasty game and be careful not to get in over your head. Just enjoy an awesome (and already too expensive) bike you already have.

Just some friendly advice. Not trying to be a .....

Wow! I couldn't agree more. Do what you want of course, but the idea of borrowing from your 401k for a bike that will lose at least half it's value relatively quickly seems like one of the worst ideas I've heard...maybe ever.

I agree with you 1000x and your advice is golden to me! However someone like acowsik seems very concerned and worried about the release of this bike I think this bike will be creme of the crop for at least 5 years like the desmosedicci.... It won't get played out in 2 years and that's a educated guess... Meaning not a fact...

My suggestion

most reasonable....just keep your current bike and run it into the ground and then replace it.

or more fun...

take all the money you would throw down the drain on a bike like that and upgrade to the coolest bike (reasonable cost of course) that is available every few years from whatever manufacturer and trade in your old.

Then if you really want that panigale rr it will have depreciated to a more reasonable price.

Or just buy a RR do .... all miles on it own it for 40 years and sell it for double than what you paid for it .
If losing money on a bike is your biggest issue for buying it in the first place .

I truly appreciate the advice from u guys but I was under the impression that these limited edition bikes held their value to a decent extent..

Was the Desmosedici RR bad enough that it lost value that fast? I don't know much about that bike and I intend to keep my bikes for long so I would want to know the reason why they lose value that fast..

There are very few bikes that hold their value. Even limited edition bikes lose value. They might get it back in another generation but it will take awhile. I only know of two ducati models in the last 20 years that have held their value or exceeded it when new on the used market.

So if you buying it because you think it will hold value I would advise that you move on. Is not going to happen.

You need a keep a limited bike for some time for it to be worth serious money .
The Desmosedici will be one of those bikes one day . The 1974 750 SS was a bike worth very little 20 years ago now you won't get one under $130,000 .

New carbon

Wow, time to buy a lottery ticket and when I win I can afford this new bike.

Nearest cafe here I come :D

In all seriousness it would be great to have all that cash to buy the latest toy.

Agree. In 1979 I almost bought a 1976 Ducati 750 S, but it would not start so I ended up paying $1100 for a Kwaka 9. The Duke was $1700. Wish I had that original 750 S now.

Been looking for a good 900SS and they cost more than my 1199.

With the 1199 lineup I see it lasting for a while IMO cos..

1. I think 1200cc is about as high as they can go..
2. The electronics is pretty sophisticated on the superbikes and there is additional electronics on the limited edition Pani (I have to get the spl email so lets see what it has in addition to DES, DTC, ABS etc)
3. With WSBK going to production rules, these limited edition bikes will be the last u get to see with really high end race components.

I may be wrong here but this could be a bike to really hang on to.. thoughts?

Just bought two 1978 900 ss this week . A black and gold and a blue and silver .
Picking up the blue one tonight .

if you have $65K to blow sure...but if you are talking about loans, taking money from a 401k, etc......dumb move IMO.

1199 RR

If the translated link doesn't work.

Here you go...Being tested at Nardo. New crankcase, stronger and lighter to withstand higher engine speeds. The new crankcase will change the stiffness of the bike and hence, rider feedback as complained by Checa. Magnesium swingarm and Titanium monocoque.

~8kg weight loss and 10-12 Hp bump

I got wind of this about 7 weeks ago.
My dealer mentioned something about submitting a list of potentially serious buyers/preferred customers to DUCATI for "something special" secret squirrel business coming up.

I didn't think anything more of it until this latest development has come up.

Interesting:cool:

sit back and think for a minute.

you are riding a 195 HP machine with some 170 kg wet.

you think you will get so much more thrills out of a 205 HP machine with some 164 kg wet?

dunno. ...

C'mon - everybody who knows anything about Ducati pretty much knew something like this was coming. They have done this consistently for quite awhile. And you knew they gave themselves a lot of room when the 1199r was not a limited production model.

And blaming it on the dealer makes no sense either. Dealers can only tell you what they know. None if the dealers could confirm this even if they had heard it. So they didn't know until the Nola meeting earlier this week. But everyone knows that each year and subsequent model is going to be better than the past. And you can't fault them for moving forward. The only reason this bitterness is present is because they have priced it beyond the reach of many. So what ? In reality that means your current year model won't depreciate more than if they had priced it at 35 ( if you want some silver lining to this).

And exactly as someone else posted earlier which said it well - you bought the original bike because you thought they built a bike that was competitive(somewhat) and pushing the edge, etc etc. Why are you bitching and moaning now as they continue to do the same ?

This article seems to contradict the information supposedly being leaked from the New Orleans meeting last week. The article mentions titanium frame, magnesium swing arm, 10-12 HP more, and only 17 lbs. lighter whereas the alleged leaked information from the dealer meeting suggest magnesium frame with no mention of titanium except for exhaust, 5-10 HP more, and over 50 lbs. lighter.
