For the street I'd get a 2015 Base or S - you don't need the R and won't go any faster on it. The '15 is much improved over the 1199

if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, go for it, but the R is a track machine and a waste on the street

Yeah What he said !! The 1299 S is more of a streetable package and it has the Electronic suspension.! Not to mention it is about $5k (USA dollars) cheaper.

If you not racing then the S model is a better choice. After all.. "There is no replacement for displacement" Read the specs The S model has 1285cc displacement and 106.7 ft lbs of torque.. (versus 99 ft lbs) on the R model..
torque is where it is at on the street..You rarely get to punch one out to it's limits on the street for very long ie; Either crashing or going to jail  LOL

The R is beautiful---( but expensive For a guy that doesn't ride / race on the track ) Hell, I would still buy the S model (even if I was just doing track days..) The only real reason to rationalize the R model is if you are racing due to the cc limitation to compete.. or JUST BECAUSE you want one LOL.. go with your heart..Sounds like you can afford it if you are willing to take a beating on the trade in value ..:D

Just get the damn R!!

I have one, it will mainly be used on the street. All this what you want for the road, what you want for the track is horse sh*t.

Get what you want, I wanted it, I got it........... It will never disappoint. How is it a waste? It's awesome, I could just look at it all day.... but I don't.

Obviously be careful with the law........ but for that moment, you know the road, there's no one about and give it a handful............. Oooooooooosh!!!

Not at all - Ducati designed the R for the track and the Base/S for the street - period. On a mountain road you will be no faster, you might even be slower.

This is the absolute last reason why the majority of consumers buy cars/motorcycles. What a vehicle is designed for doesn't mean a damn thing to 95% or more of buyers.

True, but that's also why a lot of buyers constantly complain about their vehicle. You have a manufacturer that designed something for the track, but buyers use them on the street and complain about throttle response at low revs, excessive heat, poor mpg, uncomfortable, etc,.

Same thing on forums for cars that are track focused: Why is the car constantly tramlining on the road? Why is the ride so harsh? Anyone else getting crappy mileage out of their OEM R compound tires? Why are these tires so dangerous when it's cold and wet? This vehicle is too dangerous, the manufacturer should be sued!

I expect all of that, it doesn't bother me, I know what I'm getting myself in for, but I do understand that some people won't. Like when the Panigale was first released "oooo why is it so hot" can't have that! Guess it's because I'm now used to Ducati's and their, errr, destinct 'personality'

This happened all too often on the Ford Focus ST forum. New members would complain that the tires were terrible in the snow and cold. That is because Ford only equipped the ST with summer only tires and the disclaimer in the supplement that came with the user manual strongly recommended that the tires not be used in less than 40 degrees temps!

But the Focus ST has the revoknuckle and has no tourque steer, no winter tires are needed with 276hp:D

Guys,

I love all the debate here and a decision was made. I HAD decided to pass completely on buying a the 2015 Panigale R in order to buy the MV Augusta Rivale. I figured getting an additional bike for the amount of money was I was going to spend for upgrading to the R.

That all changed though after my 2014 1199S was stolen this weekend after my track day at Homestead. Now I am going to have to buy a new track/sport bike and I have no clue what I will do now. This is the second bike I have had stolen from me (2012 Aprilia RSV4 Factory) was the other and I am tired of it.

Thanks for all of the advice on this topice.

So crappy...part of the reason I hate Miami. Obviously there are thieves everywhere, but especially in this city! Who was it insured with? I just got coverage with StateFarm...
Any details on the theft or the bike... doubtful they will get caught, but optimistic.

Indiana, I am insured through Geico. My building is Camden in Brickell. My Aprilia was stolen from the Four Seasons Hotel in Brickell and Geico paid on that one. They told me it will be special case since this is the second bike stolen on me.

I'd find another place to live for sure !

Grayson, It has been about a year and a half since the last theft. My Aprilia was stolen November 2013 and my Panigale was stolen sunday night or Monday morning.
