So just received an email from Ducati telling me about the engine mapping and heat shield but they also were pushing the ability to install Z41 rear sprocket.

I've never changed the rear sprocket on a bike - what would this particular Z41 sprocket actually do for the bike?

Basically, the engine will be spinning faster at any given gear and speed. Bottom line - improve mid-range/low-end at the sacrifice of top end speed.

Yeah... to only 177mph!! lol

Cool

Very neat tool here Capt! If only I could understand this .....
Played around with it a little since I went one up on rear sprocket already.
What does this Z41 sprocket change consist of?

**Note: by adding just ONE tooth to my rear sprocket I was required to purchase a longer chain. Reason being is that the larger sprocket comes too close to the swingarm and literally touched the forward portion of it (on external side) making a small mark on black swingarm. The longer chain enabled me to move the rear axle back to accomodate this new sprocket.
This was the selection I made thanks to Motowheels

We can kick it around a bit sometime this spring when it is nice enough to ride to your favorite Starbucks. I know how you like your triple grande white vanilla lattes with extra whip!

Whenever you talk about meeting up with other guys, that whip thing comes up - just sayin'...

My dealer shop is telling me I'd need to also replace chain and front sprocket. This sound right?

From my mechanic. You guys who know your mechanics on this WAY more than me agree with this statement:

The larger rear sprocket will require a longer chain, also the front sprocket, drive chain and rear sprocket all form a wear pattern together as these components are all working in conjunctuion. If only one of the sprockets or only the chain were to be replaced the existing wear pattern from the other two components would still be and would start to wear out all three parts prematurely.

Sounds like total hogwash to me.....

I should add, I've been using them for years, dealer shop, they only sell exoctics, and I have loved and trusted them for years. So generally trust them. This just sounds a bit BS (and makes this fix, which I'd like, cost prohibitive for me)

Then just tell them you want the rear sprocket only.. Or do it yourself :)

As a rule most do it that way. However. With a bike w so few miles on it (mine I mean) there was zero reason to do this. Dont listen to EVERYTHING your dealer says like the gospel. Heck this place has better advice. Do what you think is appropriate on change. Btw I kept the 525 chain so I wouldnt have to mess w front one.

What they say about changing the chain and front sproket is true, but I doubt you've put enough wear on these components for it to be a problem. How many miles have you done?

About 2000 miles. He did say he thought Ducati would be offering a discount for the sprocket, but didn't have any pricing yet.

Reading the bulletin it looks like a longer chain is needed anyway to accommodate the larger rear z41 sprocket. Your front sprocket shouldn't be too worn at only 2000 miles, but the front sprocket will wear more quickly than the rear because the it rotates more frequently, having less teeth, and has the chain wrapped round it with a tighter radius. Given the low cost of the front sprocket and the fact it will be "discounted" it might be worth changing it anyway.

The other option is to give the bike a good ragging to stretch the chain enough so it fits the 41 tooth rear :D

The bulletin say the discounted parts won't be available until late March anyway.

I see from the memo from Ducati just posted on anohter post that Ducati states that a new chain would be required. So only issue would be whether or not front sprocket replacement is necessary, but can't imagine that alone would add too much to the cost.

I will admit to being a bit annoyed that for the most I ever have, or ever will, spend on a bike, I'm having to spend a lot to modify it. First new spring because I'm not 200lbs, and now a sprocket. My last RSV4 needed neither. I know, I know, don't meant to open a can of worms. I of course still love it. Just a bit pissy spending more money to modify, when really they aren't upgrades. I'm sure I'll get over it.

I told you !

Gents-

The post I did above, and several other times on this forum and others, clearly stated you would need a LONGER chain if you go up on your rear sprocket - EVEN ONE DAMN TOOTH ! That is all I did, go up to 40 (anodized black)

And I am sure you were joking on this Paddock?
"The other option is to give the bike a good ragging to stretch the chain enough so it fits the 41 tooth rear " Because that will NEVER happen!
