Hi ! , I will be brief , I owne the two bikes , so it no ........ , Both has slip-on
and the truth is , the 1199 bit the Bimmer by a lot in a straight . In second or thirth gear , with different driver with similar weigh , the Duc took 15 lenght and verry quickly . I was verry surprise of that but we try at least 10 times and it was always the same result Wow , I've sold my BMW today to one of my freind because I only want to ride the Duc now :)

I would like to believe that...but here is SA the bmw out-powers the 1199 from about 210 km/h..
both bikes running power commander pc 5 , autotune
full Ti akra exhausts bmw , termi full pipe 1199
95 oct fuel...the bmw reaches 306 km/h , the pani 296

our 2c...

maybe standard bikes with slip-ons perform differently...

Wonder what MCN did with their test! I'm glad to hear of a real test. I'm still running mine in on wet mode. looking forward to Race/HI mode at some point.

Not knocking MCN but you cant always believe advertisements I guess. Lots of variables to their findings!

So many different conflicts, I guess it depends who the rider is......Troy Bayliss said he hit 300 and the bike was still pulling hard.

FYI, I'm 6 ft 4 and 100 kg, my mates , 6ft and about the same...Im sure lighter guys will get more top end out the duke....but not much room to tuck on the pani..

Good point...Not much to TB.

Have to see what he does at Mugello later this month. They have a shootout here in OZ on the 31st with 8 superbikes, be interesting to see what happens then with 9 different riders.

This might be more to do with aerodynamics than power. At these speeds any deficit in aerodynamic efficency will require an awful lot of bhp to overcome, much mode than the 5-10 bhp that some dynos seem to be showing as the difference between the 1199 and the S1000RR.

The first question I would ask is: Did the panigale have the aero kit fitted to the sides of the top faring? High speed runs are the sole reason to fit this kit, they othewise spoil the narrow sleek lines of the bike. A double bubble screen would also make a big difference. Some of the bikes at Yas defiantly had the the large racing screens, including Troy's.

There seems to be a general misconception that top speed is simply a function of greater bhp. It's much more complex than this. Drag increases as the square of speed, twice the speed four times the drag, triple the speed nine time the drag. The shape of the bike, the rider and the riders helmet are much more import than power at 300kph. Adding more power, say 5-10 bhp, will get you a tiny bit more speed, reducing the drag will get you a lot more speed.

At the other end of the speed range, drag is irrelevant, here torque and weight are critical. In both catergories the Panigale excels. The Panigale was't built to win drag races against the S1000RR, it was built to be the best all round superbike. While these reviews and contests are interesting and do provide some useful background, in the end the only review that counts is your own. Ride them both and see which YOU prefer, I have, and there is only one winner in my opinion, the 1199. The S1000RR is more refined round town and has a slighly more mental top end as it approches 14k, other than this its outclassed in almost every other respect by the 1199. Surely your not going to choose a bike based solely on peak bhp or top speed?

I should also point out that I've never owned a Ducati before and so my opinion is not biased by some false loyalty to the Ducati brand. I also actively consider the purchase of the S1000RR. Glad I didn't :D YMMV

As it's is a totally new engine design and I wouldn't want any warranty issues, I'm doing the recommended run-in on mine, but is wet mode not being too gentle with it? You need to exercise it enough to get the rings to seat well and this best done during the early part if the run-in. Put it in Sport, you know it make sense ;)

On bikes so close in performance the rider is the biggest factor. A couple of the reviews from publications have the S1000RR still tops on the track, but that's not the be all end all. In fact that's why the Panigale will be my OTHER bike. :)

12 Years ago Yamaha moved the needle with the R1. 2 Years ago BMW moved the needle with the S1000RR. Today Ducati moved the needle with the 1199 Panigale. That is why I will be getting a Ducati 1199 Panigale Tricolore, which will also be my first Ducati.

hey dont forget suzuki moving the needle again in 2001 "gsxr1000" ;)!

Wonder how you can say MCN didn't do a real test with two Ducati title winners on board?

Hard pressed to believe MCN paid Hodgson enough cash to burn Ducati that way.

In the end, they are both amazing bikes and I'm hard pressed to see the need to compare on this level. No one on here can run them to the nth degree and TBF a top speed run means nothing in this day and age of heavy highway law enforcement.

Agreed!! been itching like crazy switch to sport. Just wanted to do the first 600miles in wet then the next phase in sportHI. :D

I honestly don't think its being to gentle though. I'm hitting 5500 & rarely 6000RPM and really getting it to work in the lower rpm's as well.

I'm loving the the handling of the bike so far. Be careful on cold tires though!!

guys not sure if your comparing apples to apples. Apparently the BMW 2012 is a different bike (MCN tested the 2012). Not that I care because I'm still buying the 1199, just thought it would be worth mentioning.
