sK1 vs 1199

I recently traded my SKRR for an 1199S and can say the power is way different, seating position less comfortable and the heat, we all know the deal. I think the BMW is hard to beat on value and flexibility.

Love the 1199 motor and grunt -- nothing like it.
Same for looks and cool factor. The 1199 stands above.

For tooling around town and a short commute to work, the BMW is hard to beat. It is smooth and refined. The Ducati is so raw it makes me think I have to go fast if I'm taking it out. Plus I have a full Termi so the exhaust only adds to the rawness piece.

I also have owned Multistrada and that is why I picked up the 1199, just for the motor which I really enjoy. If Ducati puts this motor in the SF or the MS (highly doubtful), that would be very interesting.

I have to ask...Im on a 2010 s1000rr, love it although it does produce a decent amount of heat and transfers this to the frame. Im guessing the 1199 is worse but as has been said a million its a sports bike and there not made for commuting...do you regret your change at all from the S1000rr?

I always remember how planted and stable the Pani felt when i first rode it. It felt as agile and even lighter than a 600.

Horsepower is only one part of the equation, that's great for going down a straight, drag racing if you will.

In the real world however I mainly ride my bike because I love twisty roads and taking them at speed.

Hence the bike maybe 2nd to the beemer in hp , however it is also 12 kilo lighter, more agile and more stable. That for me translates into it significantly outclassing the BMW in the real world and the riding I do.

That above, and ofcourse it's a Ducati , sexiest thing on 2 wheels , and certainly as compared to that ugly cyclops called the s1000rr . ;) So CheckMate!

2012 BMW S1000RR vs 2012 Ducati Panigale vs Kawasaki zx10R walkaround - YouTube

check this video - the guy who posted I asked him the following question:-

Ive got 2010 s1000rr, currently got a deposit down on the Panigale S ABS...am I making a mistake? your advice would be appreciated...

His response was....

"I own the S1000RR and test rode the Panigale. I'm very impressed with the Panigale! It handles great, sounds amazing, the quick shifter is flawless, the instrument cluster looks brilliant, the riding position is very comfortable. The low end torque is amazing and it's electronics are excellent! The LED headlights are a great feature and very bright. I don't have anything bad to say about the Panigale. The Panigale felt just as fast as my S1000RR, which is impressive"

Makes me feel more comfortable wit my decision :)

That was my friend on his moded S1000RR in the USA
The BMW has a 130lb rider and a 215lb rider on the Ducati.
The BMW has a power commander and exhaust and the Ducati has a full termi system, with the ECU set to race mode, quick shifter on, DTC on, power on 195hi.

rematch with riders swapped coming soon.

I'll will race the Ducati 1199 when it arrives to Bahrain with my moded S1000RR (Austin Racing ARCS exhaust + Bazzaz +MWR airfilter +BST carbon fiber wheel), but that rider weight is only 103 lb and i'm 155 lb

The only place I ride my sportbikes fast is on the track and imo no one is going to find measureable differences in the real world.

I bought the S1RR this season because I wanted the best track tool at the best price. I was hard pressed to not buy a Japanese superbike given their prices but I couldn't pass on the BMW. It's ride is sublime.

I'm buying an Italian superbike next season, the Panigale and the MVAF4R / RR are in the running. TBH they all could make 150 bhp and I'd still need less. Check out track lap records and there is nothing in it to the 600s which have a lot less bhp.

Bottom line, we are lucky to be riding such quality machines. We are truly not worthy. But I don't care, I'm still buying them. :D

I've seen three people on a 1199, 1098R and a S1000RR on a track. The three bikes were all within a couple bike lengths of each other. It is 99% down to the rider at that point as those bikes are pretty damn close to each other.

So funny to see this video today. Last night, my friend and his 2012 s1000 with powercommander 5/ auto tune and full brocks with race map and I on my standard base stretched our legs on the highway too. I am basically the size of a heavy weight fighter at 275 lbs 6'5. He is 210 and 5'11. From the light he couldnt keep his front down so I burned him every time til 120 or so. ]Highway takeoff from 100 we were very evenly matched up to 180's. We ran out of open hwy too. Once you master the launch of the 1199 its really a beast. Cant wait till I mod mine to make things more even!

This argument is akin to people discussing watches. Timex watches vs Rolex. Timex watches actually hold their time and are more accurate than a Rolex. You'll see the mechanical movement of a Rolex off by a second or two over a period over few weeks while the Timex will hold 100% true down to the second. Timex is also a lot cheaper than Rolex, so you can argue that it is a better value.

But people buy Rolex because it is a handmade piece of art that more than serves its purpose in the real world. We can argue that 1 second accuracy difference experienced in the lab tests makes a difference, but does it really? Have you ever been late for a meeting by 1 second and blame it on your damn Rolex?

Buy what makes you happy. If you like the handmade exotic that in controlled "tests" is an unnoticeable fraction off the more econonimical option, you should get it. You are obviously buying it for more than just the paper results. i know thats why i bought my 1199s (and my Rolex :)) If having the economical model is important to you and the other qualities are not, buy that. It's whatever makes you happy.

What is your experience with vibration when riding the BMW, which I think is one of the criticisms one reads a lot about on various fora?

I'm thinking of getting one at some stage, but as a very passionate classical guitarist, I don't want to end up with vibration white finger or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Any other S1K owners/ex-owners also able to comment?

Almost any i4 has less vibration than v-twins.

The S1krr does not vibrate all that badly as long as you get above 5k rpms or so. If you ride at or below 5k it can be annoying. But agree with anthem that v-twins or l-twins typically have more vibration that inline 4's.

Thanks for the info. Going to test ride one later today - probably the best way for me to find out is to ride the bike...

TBH I've yet to own a bike that hasn't vibrated noticeably somewhat; but it has never been an issue, albeit I do not have the same concerns that you have. The twins I've owned were pratical racks compared to any I4, even the RC51 - I was shocked when I switched from my CBR600RR to the RC51 about the amount of vibes. Only parallel twins seemed to keep the vibes down but then again they were low powered 500s.

Insofar as the S1RR is concerned. Yes if I think about it there are vibes but nothing imo untoward, nothing obtrusive and damning in terms of negatively impacting the experience. This is on the road. On track, no issues, I'm too focused on my marks to notice and higher up in the rev range it, I'm guessing here mind you, smooths out.

Hope that helps.
