I'm lucky to own an 1199S, 1199R, BMW S1000RR, and probably spent about the same time as the OP on an R1 on the road recently so can give some decent feedback. I've also tracked a 1299S which is a better comparison than the older 1199S. I wasn't going to bother replying as it's a bit of a troll thread but still here you go
:
The engine on the BMW is an absolute missile, more comparable to the 1299 or R1 than the 1199. That said the BMW feels a bit of a whale on track in quick direction changes or fast corners and is very much a road bike compared to the 1199S which feels like a proper lightweight racebike and changes direction quicker than even supersport bikes like the Daytona 675 (we have one of these as well) which is one of the best handling bikes out there.
The R1 has a beautiful spread of torque and whilst it is not quite as quick as the BMW I would choose it on track as it's easier to throw around. It's almost as bad as my 1199R to ride in traffic and has bad surges low down so wouldn't recommend it for someone who was commuting every day. This stuff doesn't matter much to me but worth mentioning seeing as people are comparing the two. The overall finish is no where near as good as the Ducati, the R1 looks very traditional 'jap bike' and a little messy and ugly compared to the beauty and attention to detail of the Italian bike.
To choose between an R1 and 1199S would be hard as the R1 is a next generation bike and a fairer comparison would be the 1299S of which I would choose the Ducati. I'd love to have both and certainly wouldn't be upset if I was forced to own the R1!
I had to spend extra cash on rearsets, levers and could do with a higher seat to make the BMW fit my size and style but it's still probably the best road bike and all rounder. I'd prefer the Ducati or R1 on track as I'd rather have the agility over the muscle of the German machine.
None of these bikes are comparable to the new 1199R. That bike is something very special and quite different with it's Superleggera like engine. I didn't appreciate why anyone would pay all that money for a lightweight engine but it is fully justified if you are lucky enough to be able to own it. 180mph feels just as easy to ride as 100mph on any other bike.
