You're the one claiming that I said it's more then the Ducati. And I did not say that. I said it's just as expensive. When the HP 4 came out it was the same price as a base 1199.

I like that the BMW is a similar cost to the base Panigale but the bike is comparable to the S. It's definitely awesome value. It's silly not buying the lightweight wheels and uprated electronics package and the problem for me is that I really needed to fit the levers and rear sets to make it work for me and by that time the overall price is getting pretty close to an S anyhow. If you're not sure what's best just get both and sell one if you get bored :) not that that will happen.

The bmw loaded is 19 the s is 25 if u add rearsets and levers that's 700 tops you're still under 20 the 1299s is 25. So I would assume you would need rearsets and levers cause stock on the 1299 is terrible.

I prefer the stock levers on the Ducatis, they have better feel than even the Ducati Performance ones that I have on my 1199R. I've used a whole bunch of after market levers and none of them compare to the stock ones, I can only guess that it's the metal that is used is cheaper in a lot of the aftermarket ones. I use stock rear sets as well because they work for me plus most of the aftermarket ones are just bling and don't give you very much adjustment. I wouldn't mind the DP ones but they are super expensive and I don't really need them.

The BMW stock levers perform well but I really didn't get on with the position of the levers and the rear sets. On the R1 the stock levers felt good but the rear sets are a very similar position to the BMW which is too far forward for me.

The BMW owes me £18.5k which is about £3k or so less than the S so yeah I guess it's still pretty good value compared to the S. With the extra money spent it looks a bit more desirable now as well so I'm very happy with it, it looked very plain as stock. It's a shame you have had so much trouble with your 1199S as even though it's less powerful than the BMW and R1 I'd still find it hard to choose those bikes over the Ducati for hard road and track riding and it looks way more sexy.

I just couldn't get over the BMW looks and quality. It looks like they had many engineers designing the beast (one for each part) but didn't coordinate the design with each other. Plastic piece on top of another plastic piece. One engineer designed the high beam and another engineer designed the low beam and a dumb as$$ engineer designed the jagged rear brake light that doesn't flow with the bike. Left and right fairings each had seperate engineers. The only great thing the engineers did was designing a light weight crank and gearbox to make that 999 cc engine come to life at the upper range. I wanted to like the bike but I wouldn't pay a dime for it. Its like hooking up with a ugly girl that is good in bed.

Now the R1 is a sexy thing but its boring and dull riding on the streets absolutely nothing down low like is baby brother the R6. Its definitely a track bike only like the r6 that is where the bike shines. at least the 1199 has some grunt down low to have fun in the streets. The 1299 is where its at for the streets and track you get best of both worlds.

^ This guy knows what he's talking about, unlike most of the internet pundits

In terms of aesthetics, it's not even close - park an S1000RR and R1 next to a 1299 and ask 50 people which one looks better. Chances are it will be 50 for 50

I'd swap the BMW for a 1299S without a second thought if I didn't need something that could get onto noise limited tracks. Ducati really came up trumps with the 1299.

ScrapperX: Did you ride a stock R1 or one with a exhaust and tune?

I agree the stock R1 is alittle dull as it has SOOOOOOO many restrictions in the stock tune, but with a full Akro and tune.

OMG it's a beast down low. It's a completely different bike. Completely very comparable to a 1299 (yes even thou it's not a twin)

As I've said before and I'm sure I will type again, ALL OF THESE BIKES ARE AWESOME.

All that matters is what you like. It's your money, you ride it each day. Buy what you like people. Hell or buy all of them! That's what I am trying to do...lol

Ive have rode the R1M stock and tuned, regular R1 stocked and tuned. My friends try to get a little more power down low with just an A/F tune exhaust but its like the 1199 flat spot it hard to do without some engine /gearbox mods.

Dont get me wrong its a beast with a tune but comparing it to the 1299 to me there were no comparision in terms of low and mid range power. Ive always been a Yamaha fan true to my heart but the 1299 is a special bike i regret selling mine even though the Panigale R is a light weight beast
that hold its line sharp as a razor But its truely a race bike and I miss the simplicity and ease of riding the 1299S in the canyons without it trying to kill me when I mount it. The R requires 200 percent throttle attention because it spins up so quick in the canyons even in sport mode compared to the 1299. But man the R is special.

As pretty much a "Has Been" here now, I must totally admit I just come to this Thread for the exciting entertainment of reading all yoo's guys going at it ! :)

Even though I'm a friend of Mark's from WAY back, I absolutely must agree with him.
It was a LONG time ago that he first started bringing up the idea about the Beemer being a superior bike than the 1199 series - and was totally crushed by many for doing so! Now let's keep one thing in mind here gents.

I have been ENTIRELY Ducati Red 110% for DECADES now and I probably wouldn't ever think of buying any other brand of bike (With the one exception being the killer SV650 Track Bike I owned and loved - that Phil the Moderator now equally loves too) However, I must admit that these new bikes like the Yamaha R1 Series are absolutely insane out of the box and contain much more for the money than all of us can dream about getting from our bikes! IMHO - it's whatever makes YOU-THE OWNER happier than a Filipino whore on Marine Corps payday in Subic Bay (Obviously dating my age here) It is that bike which should only mean the most to YOU!

Lastly, I personally wouldn't care less if you now owned 5 Yamaha's, a Gixxer, and even a stupid Hayabusa - as long as you at one time owned a Ducati and can speak from "Personal" experience - to me you are always welcome here on this Forum!
For it's those Squids out there who talk smack, tell members what parts and gear the "Need" to add to their Ducati, and run off at the mouth on data and numbers and NEVER even had a Ducati in the first place to back .... up - those are the ones who seriously "Need" to STFU and simply just keep your eyes and ears open here instead! (Those who've been here as long as I have know exactly what I mean too. Remember all those idiots who used to talk the big game and never even owned the 1199s when they were first released??) IMHO that is a total joke! :)

With that said, I'll just go back to my recliner and put on my blanket, for I sure may be broken and washed up, but rest assured I sure as .... have more Ducati seat time and knowledge in this old grape of mine than "many" here. (I'd never say "most" because I personally know alot of you guys, and hold a great deal of respect for what you've said and done in the years Ive known ya!) Thanks for letting me jump in my friends. Even with all the new members here, I don't think I have ANY beef with anyone left here now. Stay safe out there Gents!

Semper Fidelis,

The Gunny

Gunny,

I agree with you. I even understand your part to defend Mark.

Only problem I have is with a person who don't RESPECT other's opinion. Respect goes both ways.

If you like or think R1 is better or BMW... great. If you think Ducati suck, that's ok. If you think Rossi suck..great, that's your opinion.

But dont Disrespect others who like or think Ducati is better or Rossi is the greatest just because you dont feel the same way.

I like all bikes to include Harley. I just dont have the money to buy them all. Since I only have limited amount of funding, I choose what I like the best, culture, people and company. Relatively, Ducati rates very HIGH on all those aspects.

But getting back to OP. As I said before, congrats to him and feel bad about the issue with his Ducati. I am actually little jealous of that beautiful yellow R1. I ridden a BMW 1000RR during track days and it was little boring. Ridden R6 and I loved how easy it was to ride.

Comparing the '16 R1 to an out-of-date 1199 is kind of dumb, really. For example the OP complains about the quick shift, the 1299 quick shifter is damn near flawless, brakes are fantastic, etc

I have to agree with you on that one... Two years is a hella long time in the moto world.

Your points are valid in comparison to a 1299 BUT... it's not a dumb comparison by any means as the thread is what it states it to be. The OP is comparing based on what he has owned. Hard to make a comparison to a bike you haven't owned and I'm sure there are guys out there buying used bikes and might find this comparison useful.

So your statements could be considered dumb as well considering this thread has nothing to do with a 1299. Just saying...;)

Sportbikes are updated almost as fast as computers or they aren't competitive - period. Comparing a new bike to something years old is dumb unless it's just the new owner making himself feel better about his purchase, which is obviously what this was....

What the hell, why not compare the new R1 to a 2009 GSXR1000 and make yourself feel better yet?
