As an aside, it's odd that we don't see more restorations on this forum, such as this one....

So I guess I should chime in here. I have a bunch of older Ducati’s, some with historical significance, and I have fully rebuilt or restored many of them. To be specific, that means taking them all apart and sending everything out to be refreshed or renewed (including sending frames to Pierobon).

They all get used, especially on the track, and I’m quite happy with what they are and what they’ve done. But this doesn’t seem like the forum for any of that or any of those rebuilds or restorations. I don’t think that anyone here gives one .... about a race winning AMA superbike from the late 90’s or a purpose built world superstock bike from Ducati Corse. In fact, I doubt that most people here even know what those things are. This isn’t that forum; It’s a totally different forum.

This is the forum I visit to get info on new bikes and how they are, how they hold up, and how everyone likes them and uses them. It’s quite useful for that. It’s never occurred to me once to make build threads for any of my RS or Corsa bikes.

And I think that’s okay. I would rather appreciate this forum for what it is than lament about what it isn’t.

Just thought I would share that viewpoint.

Great points. I would be nice if more diverse outlets existed. I don’t dislike any of it. I do wish there were more outlets and interest in the things you described. I guess my point was the balance between the two formats seems to be widening.

Endodoc: Gecko is another one that comes to mind. It’d be nice to have him around again. He was the inspiration (and supplier) for much of my build.

Sherpa: I’m beginning to come around to the older machines. I’m running out of projects and the idea of restoring an older machine with my own twist is getting more appealing every time I see one. There’s a 1996 900SS that keeps popping up for sale in my area. It’s a basket case and not really a sought after model but I think it would be a good base for not a lot of money.

Epic man! If I were you Id share them. I think from 95-2002 was the best times in racing. The 97 ZX7RR factory is my favorite race bike of all time. I was just talking with E.Bostrom about his ZX7R such good times.

Damn I forgot Gecko. Urs, was a really good builder. Exchanged a bunch of parts with him. I need to shoot him an email. He has been awol for some time

Yea an the chocolate wasn’t bad either. It’s always cool to have custom made parts. The uniqueness of having something just for your application, something you’re not going to see on the next guys bike

No I didn't miss the gist at all. You are missing the gist. Im saying there is no need to .... on threads because they dont live up your standard of "build".
FYI my journal doesnt live up to my standard of a superbike build but Im still having fun. The days of me kidding myself thinking I need superbike forks and the latest factory racing parts are over.

P.S. I know everyone's parents taught them. "If you don't have anything nice to say"...

What's at issue here is context, not as I believe you see it a targeted personal attack on your thread per se. In the context of changing out a few parts as opposed to a person who rebuilds for example his front forks, swing arm and suspension or who blueprints an engine or basically anything that requires significantly more time and effort than it takes to simply replace something, is by virtue of its greater complexity, more relevant (note I did not say worthy) to have assigned a specific label or description to it, that is more fitting than say using that same description to denote a pretty straightforward mundane process such as fitting new bar ends for example. If language did not allow us to differentiate and we referred to everything in the same sense, despite it being out of context with the subject matter, then it does not really depict or reflect what you subsequently then read. It's not worth getting bent out of shape over, it's merely an observation and you are perfectly entitled to disagree with it, but it's as valid a point as your defence of your use of language.

You would love it. I have one that’s completely redone with in period parts and it’s one of the most fun bikes to ride. Maybe one day I’ll make a thread on it, if I could find a suitable place here for that.

Well, as I said before, its not that I don’t believe in sharing but I don’t know if this is the place for it. I don’t even know where I post threads on any of these. They would just get ignored someplace.

One of the bikes that i own is the 916 Corsa that Alessandro Gramigni rode to two AMA superbike wins in 1996. It was the only Ducati to win in AMA that year and it’s built with a bunch of handed down WSBK parts from the year before that are marked for Fogarty, Corser, and even Kocinski. It’s amazing to see all of the special parts that are on it and it’s ready a bit of history. But I don’t know if this is the place for that - or any of my RS’s for that matter.

It’s not a knock. it’s just more that I don’t think this is the audience for it. Now when I get pics of me flying around a corner on a V4 Superleggera, well yes this is the audience for that sort of thing.

And in all fairness, all of my Corse buddies don’t give a crap about my 1199 Superleggera or any of those newer bikes. When I shared pics of a WSBK exhaust going on it, or my ripping around the track on it, they couldn’t care less. They were like, where are your 916 race bikes? So just know that it goes both ways and I have accepted that that’s normal.

It's a shame you feel that way and view this forum solely as a one-stop port of call for new bikes or that there is no appetite for a wider range of threads, rather than those people have simply become accustomed to seeing. I believe as a Ducati forum, it would make a refreshing change to see some of your work, and in my humble opinion this forum is poorer without such diversity of content as opposed to focusing solely on newer models. There is much that can be learned in terms of skills, tools, tips and practices, from seeing work such as yours, that are still relatable to a modern superbike, it's use and ownership. It also empowers people with a greater sense of confidence to perhaps tackle their own maintenance and/or more demanding work, if they can see it explained and shown to them in no uncertain terms. Though models may differ and arguably become more complex over time, fundamentally they all adhere to the same basic principles so what works for one model, for example cam timing, is likely to require the same basic approach on say a V4 as it does on a Monster 900. Age does not necessarily determine a bikes ability/relevance to contribute useful information, as many have features and technology in their own design, that still exist in modern machines or that modern machines have derived from. I also think you are selling yourself short, as you may have a lot of information you could pass on that will be infinitely more useful to people than which fender eliminator should I buy (though that sort of frivolous content has it's place here as well). Then again perhaps you are right and forum members are happy with the status quo or seek only to be informed by the present. However it's easy to forget that it is the past that shaped the present and the present that determines the future. All three are worthy of a place on this "Ducati Forum". By contrast, perhaps that is one of the reasons why the UK forum is so rich in content as it covers a huge range of models from old bevel drive twins right up to the V4 Superleggera and everything in between. Something for everyone, but that is purely my personal opinion, which counts for very little

now its videos on how to wash your bike and how to take a fairing off and turn signals, mirrors, gas

For those of you who actually watched the “how to wash your bike” and you understand the way EndoDoc feels, maybe you’ll find some enjoyment with my comment on the video, and the response

Sherpa, I'd love to read and see (via lots of pics!) more about your older, 916 era race bikes. Perhaps over at duc.ms? I'm pretty sure there would be many more keen recipients over there as well.

Sherpa, I would love to see any kind of thread on the older bikes. I love to see the history of what the brand was, where they came from, and what direction they went.

Topolino, you are a smart man.
