Build Threads and the current state of the board

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I tend to agree forum has gone to .... but there are quite a few factors involved in that, when it first started the 1199 was new and there were alot of kinks so it was a great source of info.

It tended to have two camps the track guys and the everyday rider but the bike had certain issues that everyone was interested in resolving such as the heat threads which never ended, stalling issues etc.

The forum evolved and the bling crowd (no offence had their own excitement as to what they wanted) and the track guys had alot of technical items they wanted resolved and lets face it an awful lot of bling as most riders are not particularly fast, my point is there was alot of items to keep you interested in the forum.

But members have come and gone for various reasons from selling bikes to not wanting the constant bickering on this site, and endodoc i have to say you have been one of the most divisive members on this board and have pushed alot of folks away myself included, The constant belittling of members for being interested in some bling to the idea that you can essentially build a better bike than ducati and berating them for including some items cheaper items from a parts bin and i always wondered why you just didn't do it. Everyone can build a better bike by putting on billet items or WSBK forks but that's not building a bike that's just adding bling with a bigger check book.

The only reason i used to pay attention to this site was to get info from the track riders but most of those guys have now little interest in contributing myself included.

Agreed, but I would also say that I have helped a lot of guys on this board. Given away a lot of stuff never charging for anything and given tech advice based on my experience of actually using the damn thing and yes many times from doing it wrong and ruining things. I guess you and I butted heads on something, what, I have no idea as we don’t seem from our posts to have anything in common. Bashing Ducati, yep sure did and so have many individuals internal to that company and so have many individuals on this board but I don’t see you pointing fingers in their direction I like to see value and innovation. It’s what’s interesting. Anyhow you can’t have Dr Feelgood without bully’s so I take the hit on the bully. You can throw blame on me all day. It’s all good man

Oh additionally, I get the fragility that exist. I’m not blind to it. You mention the “I can build a better bike” piece AGAIN. The point is, anyone can. Putting it out there that you don’t have to be a slave to the grind somehow to you is myself showcasing my pomposity when in reality many others have been inspired myself included by many craftsman here to be better, to not accept what’s given and strive to be innovative. To you that’s showboating, it’s belittling to someone for whatever the reason isn’t going that route. It was never meant to be.

Was going to wade in earlier but chickened out :) I'm not a racer- to old and competitive to scratch that itch, but not afraid to pick up a spanner or learn to do new things so for me and my latest love this is a great place to check it all out. Here's a simple example, thought I'd do the fluids tonight rather than at the desmo service (which I might do myself), a quick search of the forum to see if there was any ABS fish hooks and a pleasant hour with the vacuum pump and its sweet! That aspect remains and is good, as for the instagram bling threads- its not for me to tell people how to enjoy their 20,30,50k or in the case of the V4 SL 100k motorcycles. Threads about bolting on bling, really this is a hobby so why not, however that not a racers build, its something else. The other fact that was mentioned earlier is that the raison d'être for the board has changed, people have got older and life has removed many members via kids and other commitments. No need to lament just roll with it.

I will say that I am pretty gobsmacked at how much coin there is in the bling market, on one thread people were gushing over the packaging of a carbon part. To be fair it was a nice package :p

I am going to chime in on this late in the game, but I agree that the forum itself has been poor content for a while (based on what I am here for which is entirely subjective). But I also think that the forum content is a fair barometer of the consumer and the brand loyalists at this point. Also elephant in the thread, @DucatiKev posts are essentially spam. You do not need to comment/like on every post in every thread and interject political BS. Not one person comes on here for that.

Get off your keyboards and go ride........I feel like I am back in grade school again reading all this BS.
Corona lockdown and a $1000 fine. And yeah just to make it worse the weather has been absolutely glorious. I did go on a 5 hour ride today though. On the lawnmower.

I'm on the side that wants this forum to go back to the more technical side of things. I suppose I'm part of the problem. I haven't updated my build in awhile, but honestly it's because I haven't done anything in which I would deem post worthy. i'm hoping to wrap up a '16 Monster that I haven't posted about. I'll start on a Triumph Moto2 project that I'm quite excited about (managed to snag some Kalex bodywork). I suppose I could throw that in the General forum.

I just need flights to resume so I can make it home. I've been stuck across the pond. It's looking like May 20th at the earliest.

You know, that LEGO thread is an elegant example. When I was a kid (long ago) legos used to come in basic shapes. There were “build” kits. Just basic shapes without and end result. The original intention from LEGO was to provide basic building blocks and combine it with a child’s imagination. There were examples of things you could build on the box but it was up to you to figure it out. The original LEGO did not come with build instructions to erect a specific thing. Today’s LEGO is not a learning tool or a tool that teaches anything. It’s a 3D puzzle of a specific end product with detailed assembly instructions. Bolt on vs personal innovation and customization. It’s a sign of the times. Today’s LEGO lets every child or adult get the 1st place trophy. They all look the same. The new LEGO philosophy also clandestinely teaches another thing. Control, how to follow the rules otherwise the parts won’t fit. If you can’t deviate, you can’t innovate The LEGO v4 is cool though.

I have been riding sport bikes on the track only for last 10 years. Last few years I was riding R6 which is the platform I am very familiar with and I was very comfortable working on it. Last year I finally got an opportunity to acquire Ducati 1199R which will still be track only... Why am I typing all this?
Well I joined this forum to get more info about my ducati how to set it up, common problems and how to fix them etc, etc I must admit I did expect more than what I found! In my opinion if the question asked is not about newest bike it usually will not get much attention thus less information on issue or problem at hand. With this in mind I must agree with Endodoc and others about depth of true technical assistance BUT in now way I will tell someone how to call their thread!
I urge you all to please get along and PLEASE, PLEASE if you have some awesome build of any bike (except Hardly) please post up with a lot of pictures because myself and others would love to see them!

Bo 13R that was a good post sir. That was something I noticed as well over time. Real questions that were a bit past the "opinion" stage would get zero attention. There is a level if you will of the comfort where the responses grind to a halt if they even get addresses at all. Data comes from experience both positive and negative. Not many guys digging past the fairings anymore so its difficult to gather that info now. Unfortunate.

Where do y’all draw the line at for what is a “build” vs “adult LEGO’s”?

if you didn’t mine the ore, refine it, alloy it, and weld it yourself can you really say it’s a “build?

a bit silly IMO opinion to get upset over someone fawning over some shiny new farkles for a new toy on the internet.

If you don’t like the forum move on or contribute to what you want to see. It’s easy to cast stones at things and declare problems. Much less easy to provide solutions to said problems instead of just griping about it.

Just my two cents and it’s worth exactly what you paid for it.

Talk about beating a dead animal. Dude it’s a matter of semantics. If I have a plot of land and “build” a new house it’s called everywhere in the English speaking real estate world a “NEW BUILD”. If I have an existing house and I do anything to it there is an appropriate set of verbiage to describe that. “New addition” “remodel” “face lift” “interior design” etc. never once is it referred to a build. The fricken house is built. If you ain’t tearing it down to the foundation, it’s never getting a “build” status. Why should this be any different. Hey I got a new bike, I’m going to accessorize it. Nifty but it isn’t a build in the general sense and there isn’t a person who has actually built a vehicle from the ground up that would argue that point.

Nah. You gotta lumberjack the trees, run the mill, and hang all the wood by hand yourself or it ain’t a build bro. Lol

So if they had titled the threads “New v4 accesorization” or something similar you wouldn’t have gone nuclear and put your tin foil hat on?

Let me give you an elegant example. Another hobby I have is building replica guitars of famous artists. There are very specific public boards for people who build artist replica guitars in fact its even broken dow by the artist. I started out doing Van Halen replica and moved into other artists. Guess where I don't post. I don't post on the professional musicians forum. I don't post on the Gibson, or Charvel or Kramer or Jackson forums if its replica guitars, its on the replica guitar forum. No one wants to hear about my fake artist copies and i don't want to hear about the store bought POS. Nice happy existence. Everyone gets along. Its called segregation and its in place for this very reason. Here everyone has to get along Im great with seat covering threads but I would be better if there were say 1 "I machined my own fork bottoms" thread to every "how to clean the lower plastics" thread. Right now it's like 30 to 1.
