How To: Charcoal Canister Removal

Did this today. Just wanted to mention that the bracket that holds the canister on the 1299 also holds what appears to be a sensor of some sort. I hacked off the top right piece of the bracket and bolted it back in with the sensor holder in place.

Anyone know what this is?
 
As per the SPARE PARTS CATALOGUE (pg. 124 & 125 US version) Ducati Maintenance, it is a VALVE,BREATHER P/N 65540101A. This valve was definitely not present in the 1199. Maybe they put it there to cure the starting problem ??? Looks like an On/Off valve in the vacum line.

Cold starting was never a problem with my 1199S. Maybe they solved one problem and created another one :(
 
yeah, that's a valve. I've thought about removing it, but it isn't worth the time or hassle if the ECU gets upset that it's not there.

So basically, the tank breather empties into the charcoal canister. Then that valve opens at certain times, and lets the throttles suck in the fuel vapor. That's the idea anyways. It's not opening enough if it's letting fuel collect to the point of filling the canister with fully liquid fuel.

Note to those who have yet to do this: the fuel tank vents to atmosphere after removal. If you park inside a home garage, especially after a hot day of riding, your garage will fill with the rich aroma of gasoline, which otherwise would have been trapped by this filter. Somewhat annoying, but I still refuse to have that California CARB crap attached to my bike.
 
I'm curious as to where you guys are getting the hose barbs and hose caps. I'm in the process of doing this on my 1199 right now, I've got the canister all disconnected, I just need to actually find a hose barb and cap to finish it up. I tried autozone and advance auto parts and they only have a 5/16" barb. There's a local hardware store that I'm going to try tomorrow, I just wanted to see if there were any other places I can try short of ordering online. I'm planning on doing the same thing the OP did and using the bottom hose from the canister to extend the vent hose and then I know I could just shove a bolt up in the other line to cap it off but there is a hose cap actually meant for stuff like this that is what I'd prefer to use.
 
What I'd really like to do is pull ALL the breather hoses, which requires capping off the hose nipples at each throttle body. But I'd need to know exactly what bolt fits (type, thread, length) to replace the nipple. Anyone know? The hose nipple part# is 81411113B, and it is used across the range of Ducatis.
 
I know I could just shove a bolt up in the other line to cap it off but there is a hose cap actually meant for stuff like this that is what I'd prefer to use.

an oversized bolt that you have to screw into the hose, added with a bit of sealant (silicone or otherwise), is literally about the best "hose cap" you can have.

NAPA or any auto parts store sells them. Just tell them its a fuel line cap.

For a cap, I just used a small stainless steel hex screw. For the barbs, I bought a pack from McMaster Carr.

If you get a hold of the service manual, it shows a pic of how the EU bikes are setup. Both tank fittings feed down into a Y then to the port next to the cooling fan.

I didn't like the idea of just having useless hoses in there either. I pulled it all and put rubber vacuum caps on the nipples at the throttle body. So much cleaner that way.
 
ok, so I went through a few parts fiches and Ducati uses the same hose nipple for every model I checked (recent bikes).

So I went out and took some measurements - I used my wife's Monster as it has the easiest access.
- It is an M6 size, thread pitch 1.0, 8mm long. I confirmed this by chasing the threads in an M6x1.0 die, as well as screwing a M6x1.0 bolt I had on my workbench, which fit perfectly.
- the hole is 8.2mm long. The nipple's thread length with the washer is 6.67mm. So either way I guess it doesn't fit the hole completely. Although if someone were to use a 9mm long bolt, it would go flush with the inside, more or less.

So to completely delete the hoses, one just needs an M6x1.0 bolt, 8~9mm long. The washer is copper and reusable. Liberal use of loctite red would be a good idea.

the M6x1.0 bolt I test fittted. It's too long to use as it's 16mm, but the exact same bolt at 8mm long will be perfect.

ok, finally got to doing this on my 1299. I used titanium M6x1.00 8mm bolts, because, well, why not?

From the right side, undo the three bolts holding in the electronics tray, and you'll be able to access the rear cylinder. The hose and nipple are right in your face. 10mm socket to remove it. These were on fairly tight; on my Multi and my wife's Monster, they were VERY loose. I suspect these things might work loose over time. I reused the copper washer and with plenty of loctite, simply put the new bolt in:

to get to the horizontal cylinder, the ABS pump cover needs to come off (two bolts). It's also very easy to access, although several hoses are in the way.

Once the screw is in, you can pull all the hoses out. On the 1299, this means unplugging that weird valve as well. I ziptied the harness side of the plug out of the way, after waterproofing it.

With the electronics tray off, it's really easy to see that the most elegant venting solution is to use a Y-connector up near the tank, and to just have a single hose run down to the vent nipple it attaches to on the bottom of the bike.

I was completely OK with leaving the hose on my bike until I saw this post. Needless to say, my Panigale is now charcoal nipple free.
 
1299s difference?

I removed the charcoal canister earlier and am confused by the description in the OP's post. It seems I'm supposed to extend and vent the hose that's going into the larger cap-looking thing on the charcoal canister and cap the one going into the smaller cap-looking thing in the charcoal canister. That seems pretty straightforward per the photos posted. However, the description says the line from the gas tank had a larger inside diameter compared to the other(to be capped) and this is not true on my 1299S. It's actually the other way around. So which should I go with? Cap the one that has the smaller inside diameter? Or the one that was connected to the smaller cap-looking thing on the charcoal canister?
 
Hey Izzy, I'd stick to the diagram and not the size of the hose. 1299 hoses must be different than the 1199, but I'm guessing the charcoal canister remains the same design.
