COM port question

Recently had a CEL on my 2012 1199 and found this thread. Downloaded the software from JP and realized that my laptop does not show any COM/LPT ports in the device manager. Running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop. Has anyone else run into this? Why does it need a COM port allocation if the ELM327 plugs into a USB port? I have yet to order the cable and ELM, and just want to make sure my computer will even be compatible before I do. Anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.

Your computer might not work if I remember correctly you would need Windows 8 or newer but not for sure on that? Without the COM port the bike can't communicate with the Melco via your OBD connector and ELM.

COM port question

Thanks for quick reply. Contacted JP and was told that the COM port will appear when the ELM327 is plugged into computer. Hope that helps someone else with the same question. Can you look at the following link from Ebay. The ELM327 with the FT232RL v1.4 is hard to find. Does it have to have that additional PIC18F25K80 chip? The link has one with both chips in V1.5. Hoping it will work?

Either 1.4 or 1.5 ELM just make sure it has the FT232RL chip and your good to go.

This is the modem i have and it creates the port and connects correctly using COM7 on my win10 device and yes you need to connect everything to be sure it works (very painful experience if it does not). however, while i see blinking lights, i cannot get the device to read my bike's info. i believe i am having computer problems but i'll sort that out later.

This is the cable from the former Soviet Union that our comrade friend is make a bundle on selling hundreds of them on ebay....capitalism at it's best. free shipping to the usa and worldwide means he is probably getting help from the government so i guess all has not changed. ;)

For those of you looking for an ELM setup, OBD Innovations does not have them right now as they are on backorder. However, I found a kit on the Lonelec website and it is specified for just this purpose. I ordered one and am waiting for it to come across the pond to the US. FYI.

Not too helpful because I got the last one, but I ordered this cable and it worked.

Previously I purchased a v1.5 ELM327 and it would not connect to bike.

I am still having troubles getting a license key, the website is returning an error, but I haven't contacted them about it yet.

when you say "wouldn't connect" are you talking about no lights at all or always red lights, never green or wouldn't return bike info?

what bike?

i might be having same troubles.

2015 Panigale 1299. The lights would do their thing (green and blink) but melcodiag couldn't read bike info on connect.

Cable pin out

CAN Bus Connector Pin 1 to OBD Connector Pin 16
· CAN Bus Connector Pin 2 to OBD Connector Pin 4 and Pin 5
· CAN Bus Connector Pin 3 to OBD Connector Pin 6
· CAN Bus Connector Pin 4 to OBD Connector Pin 14

The above pinout was provided by Khmer1199. I just got the cable from Ebay, allegedly for the 1199 Panigale, and I checked the pinout with a multimeter. Mine is much different and was just wondering if the above is 100% confirmed as the correct layout. Mine shows as follows:

CAN 1 to 16
CAN 2 to 3 and 4
CAN 3 to 14
CAN 4 to 5

Has anyone else taken the time to check this out on theirs with a multimeter before hooking up? Khmer1199 seems to know what he is doing, so I am guessing mine is wrong. Can anyone else confirm this pinout?

i checked mine and it matched khmer. didn't want to take a chance on frying anything so i pulled out the multimeter.

OK thanks. Figured as much. Can't trust anything on Ebay these days. I was able to remove the pins and do it the right way. Glad I checked.

I am IN!! Everything worked and I connected and followed instructions to send for license. Hopefully it went through ok. Just a question....can I still utilize the software while I wait for the license or are the features not enabled until I do so?? Thanks in advance.

I've never seen any mention on this being used for the PaniR with its Mitsubishi ECU.
Any insight on this?
