I have noticed that some people do this and others do not. I am just curious as to what people think/do regarding this situation.

The French have cute custom: bikers there drop a toe to each other - saves upsetting your grip on the bars...
It's observed by pretty much everyone on mounts larger than a commuter.
I wish it were more global.

Generally we don't wave, we just nod.

If I'll be passing at speed (country run), I'll throw a hand up - not a jazz hands kinda wave though - cos that's a bit... jazz hands - but just to like eye level as a kinda 'salute' of recognition.

Cruisers don't get any love, they never return it, so I've given up on them.

Will nod or chat to scooter riders at lights but they usually look at me like I'm some kinda weirdo.

I acknowledge (sometimes a nod, sometimes a wave, sometimes a leg out) most riders. It gets a bit tedious when a train of 10 plus come along in the opposite direction. In that case it is usually a random nod.

I am selective in acknowledging scooter riders; an absolute no no to the yoof in jeans and an oversize helmet who insist on buzzing everyone and think they are Rossi / Schwantz etc :)

I think it depends on the part of the country. Although those with strong opinions will never break their thoughts. I think all the south eastern states wave and some go out of their way sometimes. I live in a small town that everything on wheels waves, so I get a little bored at waving over and over, but generally if they wave I wave too. I don't discriminate at any bike, since I have friends of every walk of life. If they're on two wheels, that's cool by me...

either a nod or the occasional wave or leg out, do this to most riders except scooters

I wave or nod at most of the riders except scooters and people who are riding in shorts, boat shoe's and a T-shirt, ergo people who are not wearing their protective gear.

I wave to all riders as I don't want to be the "jerk" on the Ducati that doesn't wave back.
Besides Im of the mind that I think pretty much all motorcycles are cool even if a particular brand or style isn't for me.
I find Harley riders wave to me 90% of the time and ofter wave first. By wave I mean the two finger salute.
I actually don't wave to all riders....no scooters unless they wave first in which case no sense being rude.

a nod cost me nothing
cant believe you guys are so hard on scooters- shame on you :( lol
if i nod and get nothing back i just think F#$% you and carry on my merry way

Shame

As stated here, Harley riders hardly ever give a wave back so I dont even bother anymore! If I can take my hand off bike to wave I usually wave to any other rider except them. Sometimes I wont take my eyes off the road or hand off the bar, so I dont giev that priority over being safe. Bottom line.

i wave to everyone if i dont get it back i dont care no big deal. ive noticed i dont get a wave back from the done up harley riders. what i mean by that if they have the ape hangers or all sorts of chrome on their bikes. On the 1199 when i give the wave to other sport bike riders ive noticed a wave a look back a toot of the horn, all the way to a complete turn around. Like i do if i pass an exotic car while driving.

Tend to nod at anyone who you get eye contact or that you know they're looking. Harley riders just suck, friggen accountants... They're just plain rude.

Sometimes I wave to scooters by accident, then I wish I could take it back.

just kidding :)

Hahaha. Gotta a good laugh out of that one! It's happened to me too. :D

These days I wave at everybody. In the 80s everyone waved, regardless of the type of bike. Then there was a schism between sportbike and cruiser it seemed like. So I make an effort to wave to anyone these days, if conditions allow.

I never wave to scooters, but sometimes, I give them a kick to push them out of my road.

I also almost never wave inside Paris. Too much bikes, so we do not wave.

But as soon as we quit Paris, we always wave.
Sometimes a nod, most of the time, to a rider coming front, we wave. But when we pass a rider (coming from its back faster than him), we put a leg.

Government is so harsh on us it has the nice benefit to make us bikers more friendly than ever.

(But still, we kick scooters.)

All riders , though I'm seriously considering to stop waving to any Harley riders, they rarely wave back!

This !
And i stopped waving to police on bikes.
As the last one i waved to turned and gave me a ticket for crossing the line.
He told me that i took his attention so would probably going to do something wrong  , in wich he was right :D
