I have a 1199 base abs model.....I ride fast road and the odd trackday..is it worth upgrading to the " S " model..?...I have had many "R models " in the past and found the ohlins a bit harsh for the road....

thoughts please..is the extra bling worth the extra bucks.?

Nope... not worth it at all in my book... I have the same bike as you.. Marzocchis are great... once set up the suspension on the base is really good as far as I am concerned... so to me its a no brainer.. stick with what you have.... Buuuuuut... I know this posting will be followed by numerous S owners arguing the merits of said bike... so stand by...:)

I was thinking that and have the suspenders sorted for height weight etc and does make a real difference.....

thanks

If you already have a base, it'll be pointless, you'll lose too much money. Just upgrade the parts on your base like others have done.

I wish I had gone with the base and added the Ohlins ttx mk2 and nix if needed, as well as put on my own forged wheels to set the bike apart. It's hard to bite the bullet now and dump more money in it after all the carbon etc.

Think resale value...a base full of bling will still sell for less than an S.

I don't thing about resale value personally. I buy a bike and do to it what I like and ride the .... out of it. I hate to sell them and usually just keep adding to the collection.

doesn't take into consideration the DES suspension. I think down the road, after warranty period ends, failures on the electronic suspension will be obscenely expensive and you're liable to see more people go after the used bases.

DES failures are going to be very expensive to repair.

at the end of the day, if you're thinking resale value on a duc, you'll be heartbroken anyway, as they all depreciate like mad.

Based on history, yes. Look at previous generation Ducs. The base model always sells for much, much less than the S/R model, no matter how many thousands were spent on farkles.

I'm talking about a stock S versus a base full of farkles. Hell I've even seen it on ANY Ducati with $4000 down the toilet on full termis, where as one with stock cans listed for the same price.

that's why you always keep the stock parts and put it back to bone stock before you sell it, than ebay all the goodies separately. I learned the hard way back in the day on my 996 S. The big reason I don't bling up my bikes anymore, ride them, sell em when I want something new and repeat.

That is the smarter move for sure, but a lot of people just don't do it.

Before my Pani order, I studied sales of tons of 1198's and came up with this chart (Fall 2011 prices). Mods don't make a difference unless you really want ALL those mods. And worse, all it takes is a couple the buyer dosen't want (i.e. Gloss CF or ANY CF wheels -ha) to sour the sell.

__________2008___2009___2010____2011____New
1198____11,320___11,995__13,200__14,260__16,495
1198S___14,420___15,180__16,690__18,600__ 21,995
1098R___18,705__________________________40,000

are those actual sale prices or ASKING prices?

Exactly my point. Except if you bough a base originally, then added 5+ grand of farkles, you won't see a dime of that back. Let alone the cost of labour for installation or your time.

Look at that depreciation of the 1098R!!! Farkles or no I bet I loose less on my Standard than any S/Tric/R ....
