MCN Shootout - V4S, RSV4 1100, S1000RR M

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I've seen the new S1000RR M spec in person and it is pretty underwhelming visually. Apart from the new headlights, which look great, the rest of the bike looks cheap and dated in my opinion.

It's obviously a great bike on the track, but it's even more refined than the previous generation S1000RR, so it's going to be pretty boring on the road. I owned a 2016 S1000RR and while it had great power and a crazy top end, it was quite bland to ride compared to my V4S.

Even the guys on 44Teeth said that they'd pick the V4S over the new S1000RR for street riding, as the V4S just had that wow factor and character that the S1000RR just doesn't have.

Everyone's different though and wants different things from their bikes.

I freely admit that the wow factor was part of why I bought my 1199. But it was (and still is) one of three bikes I own, and the owner of the dealer has been a friend of mine for many years so it was an easy deal. He even let me do a 100 mile demo ride on his personal 1199 before I bought mine.

But for most people who it is their only bike, I would liken it to a lady you marry. Good looks might have been a factor in asking her out on a date. But there better be more than just good looks if you want the relationship to last. I do admit though, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper to divorce a motorcycle. Don’t ask me how I know ;)

New BMW is not comfy as it was with previous gen.

Also, there is stop on sale on new BMW and recalls to all. They say issue with engine. This is recent news.

It only effected 2 weeks of production in May, it doesn't effect all bikes. Mine was produced beginning of April and is not effected. They are replacing the engines in the bikes that were effected from that run.

The only complaint I have seen in regards to comfort is the seat, which is rock hard, but is amazing for the track or short stints. The rest of the ergonomics have been improved over the last gen.

Correct but bang for the buck, comfort and performance Ducati is in trouble... I'm jumping to M-spec Bmw and can't wait!!!

I'm not spending 27K for V4S and worry about oil leaks, recalls and 1500$ major service

Ciao

Lol arrivederci;)

Is it just me or does anyone else kind of think the old s1000rr with the asymmetry was better looking than the new bike? Controversial to many, but I kind of liked it and it gave it character. The new BMW looks like any ol Japanese bike now. Great engine for sure great bang for the buck but aesthetically uninspired and kind of cheap looking.

Honestly the hp4 is beautiful

Me too, i liked it. Looked like a pissed of wasp.

A pissed of GERMAN wasp.

Yes, the V4s is the midrange Panigale, what do you call it??? The comparo didnt say best 25k sport bike that I read. If you want cheap, you are in the wrong forum, bang for your buck isn't in the liter class at all, check out the 600's.

I dunno about the states... But here in aus you can buy a brand new litrebike blade atm
for 15,750 ride away...

I'd say thats pretty good bang for your buck atm....

In regards to the bmw im more pissed off that they're releasing it as far as i know here...

In two colors.. Red for the normal base ones, and m spec...

2 colors!? What the hell.

In a street sense yes the CBR isnt near as expensive as some of the others. I should qualify my statement as aimed at the track, liter bikes go through things like tires/brakes/parts much faster and more $$

Who the hell can see what the bike looks like when your riding it? I would think that the quality and performance of the bike is a little more important than if the headlights are the same size. Unless you love Starbucks and grape flavored kool aid too....

new superbike

After 3+ seasons on the track with my 2012 1199S, I managed to kill "Sophia".
Thought about getting another 1199S, because I am familiar with it, and now have a bunch of spare parts:(
Looked at a bunch of reviews, and the one that got my attention was MCN's review of V4S, 1299S, and Aprilia. Aprilia is too compact for me. MCN thought the V4 was a major step ahead of the 1299.
So V4 rose to the top.
Read about the new BMW. Looks like it is a major improvement over last generation, and I have ridden the last generation and it was fun and easy to ride relative to the 1199. Costs less than the V4.

Decided to get a left over 2018 V4.

I like Ducatis, plain and simple.
If you race bikes for a living or because anyone else thinks more or less of you because you aren't the fastest guy/gal on the track, well OK.
I am not in the club.

I'm 67 years old. This will likely be my last superbike.

I have done a bunch of sh..... in my life that I regret.
Not going to add not buying a V4 to the list.

FWIW, my wife told me to do it or I would always wish I had.
Bless her:)

As many different right answers as there are folks out there I imagine.

I aspire to be just like that when I'm 67, although I told myself the V4R is my last bike but I'm only 45:)

I have had my new V4R , Race build only since April 24th, Been on the Race Track 5 X now and I love the bike... I just picked up my New BMW S1000RR M package last weekend for Racing only too... I will give my unbiased opinion on what bike I like better on the track only, unfortunately probably won’t Race the BMW this season because I still need to get it Race ready per CCS- ASRA rules..I do plan on doing track days on it and also plan on testing both bikes back to back... Stay tuned..

:pI have nothing against the BMW, I loved riding friends bikes, they were like a couch. they did everything perfect and were boring cause it was all great.

The new 2020 M i have not rode, i have seen it a few times, up close. As i said prior, i had high hopes for this bike, but when you see it in person, you see its not finished well... the headlights, i like. I think they did a great job. The side look shows the massive Cat, and when you delete, there is no belly pan (yet) so it looks rough, the tail, interesting to have it so you may not be able to remove the fender... the stickers, they are that, stickers. They were coming off the demo bike at COTA and off the rear tail from everyone putting their leg over it. The lack of Ohlins and Brembo is odd, i have heard the brakes are great, and i heard they fade. I have not rode to say myself. The TPMS is cool, but it acts up and you have to toggle through it to get it to remove, so when you go to the track and lower your pressures, this might be an inconvenience, or when they heat up. The dash, is just amazing. such a big beautiful display. The clip -ons are no longer clip ons. they are clamed to the forks so you have to change out the tree clamp. if you go down, you could ruin more than a clip on, might be the front end, clamp etc... seems odd.. and I have heard from owners the seat is bare on the BMW, its not as nice as past bikes.

my V4R, i do not have the RTV that EDR posted, i had looked after. they just snap in to cover the removed section of the front end on my bike. I did find a false neutral this weekend while riding, not sure if this was the bike, or me... so I cant speak on that... i am seeing others have the concern. the R is the hottest bike i have ever ridden, the gauge doesnt tell me the temp as my 1199 did, but the bar graph does not go high, but i tend to be the heat soak on this bike... not sure if the fairings are allowing the air to move around the engine better and it goes to me or if it runs hotter. when riding at normal sprinted rides, i dont notice, its only around town that i do.

With all that said above, i have nothing against the BMW, I was just hoping for their latest and greatest premier level bike, the finish would be better. I dont know how it rides, if the QS will have issues, if the engine has a dip etc etc. I havent rode it. I would just want a clean bike if i drop 24k on a bike.

I dont think you can go wrong with any bike on the market today. ALL really are pinnacles of the world. I am not sure any bike produces under 195hp anymore, the HP wars are on full bore. We live in such a great time for motorcyles. I hope that a friend will allow me to ride their new M after break in and they can ride my R and we can compare. Not sure the italian beauty will ever be dethroned as the best looking bike in finish, but i like competition

Biggest issue i have with my V4R, is everyone stopping me to talk about it. its fun, but oh so time consuming :D

I've got a deposit on one, but I read they're being recalled due to castings affecting oil flow from what I saw online. Hoping mine comes in this month. Please let me know what you think of it.

I'm hanging onto my 2016 S1000RR as I might be commuting a long way to work in the future, and might as well put the mileage on old faithful. I think I'm going to hold onto my R1M too for now. I'm fairly happy with the V4S, but it picked up some debris on the highway (cosmetic only) to the tune of $9K, so I'm staying off it until it's "pretty" again.

How are you doing in CCS with that V4R? Were you at Summit Point?

As to the others, yes the recall is due to a tooling issue in one of the 3 factories that resulted in a run of engines not getting an oil hole drilled in the proper place.

The tail lights come completely off due to the track nature of the bike, ABS can also only be fully disabled with the tail lights off. NRC should have a tail tidy for it sometime in July-August from what I heard as well as turn signal block offs I'd imagine.

I've already had the little black shark fin fall off the bike as others have mentioned in videos--it's a little cheaply made there.

As far as the quickshifter goes, the BMW's is hands down better than the Ducati's. It lets you do anything and still shifts smooth as butter. The dash is better, the controls to use the dash and features are more intuitive.

The TPMS is something you can set levels on and I've had zero issues with it once you set the parameters, same thing with the shift light.

The Hayes brakes are just as good as the Ducati spec "Brembo's" on the V4S, new MC and pads and they shouldn't have any fade on the track. The suspension is Marzocchi and they are no slouch. People who generally bring up the brand names Ohlins and Brembo usually don't know that Ducati (and BMW, and every other brand) has lesser made parts by those companies designed for them to cut costs. A fork you order from Ohlins and an Ohlins fork that comes factory on a Ducati are not the same, even if they have the same "model number"

Honestly for under 22 grand, I don't think you can find a better option other than skipping the M Package and going with the Race for 19k. Some people like the CF wheel bling, but I'll break these CF wheels in the next year for sure...and I won't be able to weld them back to spec. I would have gone with the Race package if I would not have had to wait 2-3 months to get one. Hell, once the base package gets hacked you'll be able to buy a $16k bike, add every part the V4R has directly from Ohlins (FGRT, TTX GP), Brembo GP4 RX, full ti Akra exhaust, Marchesini M7RS wheels, upgraded rotors and you still are below the MSRP on a V4S.

V4R is a nice bike, don't get me wrong, but I think there's a bit of a premium on it, especially if you're going with a race kit (which why wouldn't you at that point?)...I'd rather own two RR's so I can bin one and get on the other at the track and not have down time.

all good points... but what Neeves says at 6:03 applies.

As Jensen says...if that's your belief, I'm not going to be able to change it...but my belief is that there's more manufacturers than just Ducati that do that for me. I'm not blinded by the balsamic vinegar. I do realize I'm probably on the wrong forum to express that...but if you love bikes, or that feeling he's talking about and you only get it from Ducati's I do not think you've tested the waters of motorcycling as much as one might believe they have.

You don't get those kinds of comments about an ugly bike, no matter how capable. The Ducati does give more in the way on qualitative experiences IMO.

Life is too short to ride an ugly bike. Period.
