Would you choose a V4R or SP2 for trackday use?

Sorry I dont understand what your are asking here, you have an SP but want an R? They are different bikes, the SP is better for street, the R is better for track. Trading one for the other is about personal taste and thats up to you

I have an SP2 and was possibly considering the R. For the most part it seems the R is the more favorable one. I am curious what a happened with the guy that started this thread since he said he was getting the R back in November.

@gtomachine710

I got the R and currently have both the R and SP2.

The SP2 is very often spoken about in the way that has happened above. I’m not sure why there’s the hate from a few but there’s plenty of love for it out there.

It’s actually good value IF you want the items that it comes with - better master cylinder, DDA, Superleggera carbon wheels, dry clutch, remote adjuster, Rizoma rearsets and probably some other bits that I’ve forgotten.

If you wanted all the accessories that it comes with then it would cost more than the V4S with those accessories but, as far as I’m aware, you can’t just order the Superleggera wheels unless you have a bike that they came with (happy to be corrected if wrong but they are eye-wateringly expensive).

I’ve still not ridden it yet due to the weather but hopefully tomorrow and track at the beginning of May, so I need to get some km on it! I got the R because I got offered a very good deal on a new one from a dealer and I mostly ride these on track, so I fancied trying the R. If most of your riding is on the road then I suspect the SP2 would be a better bet. Both awesome bikes and I should sell my SP2 but still can’t bring myself to make much effort to do so. 🫣

Anything you get for SP2 you can get on R, so accessories comment is false
I don’t think you can get the Superleggera wheels.

That price point buys you 1l engine that is faster than Sp2 1.1l engine
I don’t think there’s much in it. I think there’s 3hp more (maybe) at the top end on the R but more torque from the SP2.

@Paul G Why so rude to him? Regarding numbers, I’ve seen higher numbers on the top triple on the R than I’ve seen on the SP2. I’d say they are similar numbers, but they aren’t making the SP2 any more so maybe it will end up a bit less than the R.

Thanks for the input. I have a 23 SP2 that I've had for well over a year now and love it in every way. I've noticed quite a few new 23 and 24 R's out there vs the SP2 where there are hardly any available. Although even the small amount of SP2's are still sitting. It really is an off market. The majority will likely go for a V4 or V4S.

In terms of holding value I believe the R and SP2 are in the same boat. They both still devalue plenty at the end of day with not much demand, especially when Ducati comes out with the new version.

On a somewhat related topic - I did a 5 hour trip on my R last Saturday (since I have to put on 1k kms for the first service, before i dedicate it to track duty)...am I doing something wrong or people that ride it on the road masochists?! I hurt in places that no man should hurt and my neck felt like I was headbanging for hours :(

It’s a great bike. I’ve loved having mine and I still do, hence why I’m not really making a big effort to sell it. I think you are right regarding the market as well and it seems to be similar in certain cars.

I think they probably hold their money better than some other models, but you’ve got to expect any bike to lose money.

I’ve heard the same thing from others. It’s probably okay for a trip to Starbucks and back.

It’s your fault that I got the R…

Agreed. Have you not ridden the R at all yet? I was hoping to get your perspective on the different riding experiences. Does the R really feel like you are on a complete different bike? I know I'll get hated on for saying this but I don't track and strictly ride canyons.

I’ve not ridden it at all yet, but I will very soon.

Personally, I would stick with the SP2 for the road. I’ll update when I have ridden it, but it’s only going to be at low revs to run the engine in.
